Lifetime has done it once again and let loose with a fluffy, romantic comedy in the spirit of My Best Friend's Wedding and Clueless. Normally, the women's network's television movies are heavy, slow, and easily passed on like a molasses cocktail. "I Do" is surprisingly different, and boasts the headlining talents of Denise Richards and every woman's firefighter fantasy, Dean Cain.
Richards plays Lauren, a harried assistant to a wedding planner, who is so adept at running the love lives of others that she has no time for her own. That is until she meets Nick, a fireman who rescues a groom who braves a death-defying stunt at his wedding. There are instant sparks between the two, but there's a problem -- he's in a wedding that she's planning, and she thinks he's the groom, he meets her ex, and he thinks she's married! The would-be courtship commences with a series of mishaps, misunderstandings, and near-misses!
Denise Richards holds her own in this film as the "slightly obsessive compulsive" Lauren, but in this reviewer's biased opinion, it's Dean Cain who truly gives this movie its charm. Granted, one has to consider the fan base and the audience that this movie plays to, and while at times the plot is more sugary sweet than a cotton candy pie with a garnish of Sweet-Tarts, Cain's Nick delivers precisely what the average woman yearns to see -- the all-around perfect guy. Granted, the film is predictable and completely lacking in suspense, but it's not a half-bad way to pass a couple of hours. Especially if you're a hopeless romantic.
