By Jette Kernion (reprint from 3/17/09 -- SXSW Film Festival)
I'm wary of movies that try to be instant cult/camp classics, with intentionally overdone dialogue and outrageous costumes and actors who are metaphorically winking or even non-metaphorically mugging for the camera. When the characters are in on the joke, it isn't all that funny. And when I learned that the writer-director of Women in Trouble also co-wrote Snakes on a Plane, I grew even more skeptical. But the actresses who populate Women in Trouble tend to play it straight, even when they're wearing assless spandex pants or smoking invisible cigarettes, and that's what keeps this film fun instead of tiresome.
Women in Trouble has a multi-story, anthology-like structure. Writer/director Sebastian Gutierrez said before the SXSW screening that he originally had one ten-page sequence that he wanted to shoot, then thought it might be easy to shoot several of them, »

In early 2009, the “everything-is-connected” movie finally hit bottom when its chief architect, writer Guillermo Arriaga (21 Grams, Babel), made his directorial debut with The Burning Plain, a film that epitomized the dirge-like self-importance of the worst cinematic puzzles. The best thing about Women In Trouble—another everything-is-connected feature from a screenwriter, this time Gothika and Snakes On A Plane scribe Sebastian Gutierrez—is that it isn’t a Guillermo Arriaga film. It isn’t about violence, abuse, racial identity, masochism, guilt, or any other themes piled onto the audience’s conscience like weights on the barbell in Unbreakable. Instead ... »

Veteran's Day brought no shortage of veteran appreciation today in Twitter-Wood, prompting thanks and memories from across the board, as well as a personal note from "Twilight" actor Gil Birmingham.
Meanwhile, Jason Schwartzman's on his way to the NYC debut of "Fantastic Mr. Fox," which as a Wes Anderson follower, I am anxious to see myself this weekend. Another new release, "Precious," really got a hold of Tyrese Gibson, who said the film's been keeping him awake. Check out their thoughts along with pictures from Peter Facinelli and John Stamos and a Henry Winkler autograph to be jealous of after the jump. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 11, 2009.

"Assassin's Creed 2" is right around the corner, and as a means of drumming up interest about the franchise, Ubisoft went ahead and commissioned a series of live action short films set in the game's universe.
I actually went up to Ubisoft Montreal to check out the production, as well as learn a bit more about the game, and they weren't kidding around with this one. Apart from having director, full cast and period-accurate costumes, Ubisoft gave the visual effects work to Hybride (which is actually part of Ubisoft). You'd know Hybride for their work on the visual effects in flicks like "Sin City" and "Snakes On A Plane."
Remember that the entire film was shot on a green screen set, so whenever you see, well, anything that's not an actor or prop (like all the sets), it wasn't really there. Kinda staggering when you think about it.

On and offscreen couple Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer will no doubt glamour True Blood fans into viewing their new project Open House, a thriller that according to Dread Central is about a young and wealthy couple hosting an open house to sell off their estate only to find that one of their guests never left. The cast is said to feature, amongst others, Tricia Helfer (BattleStar Galactica), Rachel Blanchard (Snakes on a Plane) and Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker). Directing the movie is non other than Anna's brother Andrew who lacks experience as a director with only a few credits to his name, but has been a producer since 2002 according to IMDb. The Canadian siblings run a production house together called Paquin Films, which produced two movies so far: Blue State and Something Beneath. I know you can't see it, but I'm shrugging my shoulders right now. Engaged to be married in real life, »

Women in Trouble is a new movie written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez, who wrote Snakes on a Plane, which stars Carla Gugino, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Connie Britton, Josh Brolin, Simon Baker, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It's an ensemble movie about porn stars, hookers, strippers, therapists, and flight attendants, all of whom are...in trouble, it seems. The movie's first trailer was just released, and I've posted it below. To the right is also a new poster; you can check out three more posters here. Problem is, I really can't figure the movie out. It appears to be a comedy. But then it goes ... »

One of the great double-edged swords in the life of a big-time rock band is international travel. Sure, if you get to a certain point in your popularity, you could visit exotic locales, eat excellent food and meet interesting people. On the other hand, it's likely you'll really only see Rome, Frankfurt and Dublin from the windows of your bus or your hotel room. A little sympathy is necessary when you consider the sort of schedule most of these bands maintain on the road (especially in a foreign country), which is why Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta can be forgiven for having a bit of a meltdown on Twitter earlier today.
The string of tweets (over three dozen in total) began when Saporta responded to a news story about how clothing retailer American Apparel was forced to fire all of their undocumented workers, most of whom were illegal immigrants. "Sorry »

The moribund horror comedy sub-genre showed a glimmer of vitality with the ripsnorting debut of Zombieland, which yanked $24.7 million out of around 3,900 screens at 3,036 sites. Despite Zombieland and the continued strength of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the Toy Story franchise, though, overall weekend business was off six percent from the same period last year, when Beverly Hills Chihuahua ruled, and on the low end for the timeframe.
In the realm of zombie movies, Zombieland had the second highest-grossing start on record behind the Dawn of the Dead remake, but, more importantly, it was the first horror comedy in recent memory to find significant theatrical success. The only horror comedies to claim greater initial attendance in the past two decades were the Scary Movie pictures, but they primarily appealed as spoofs. Failure is the norm, with movies like Jennifer's Body and Snakes on a Plane among the corpses. »

There once was a time when comedy and horror were successful and entertaining bedfellows. During the '80s, movies like Gremlins and Ghostbusters mixed the two genres to create major blockbuster hits, and some of the bigger horror movie franchises at the time also incorporated more and more humour as time went on. Throughout the '90s, each of the Scream movies made over $150 million worldwide. In general, it seemed like people had no problem experiencing both laughter and scares during the course of the same film. Fast-forward to today, and sadly it seems that just about any combination of comedy and horror on the big screen is now met with box office disappointment. What's the deal? Technically speaking, I can see that, in a sense, comedy is the complete opposite of horror. You can't be immersed in fear and suspense when a movie is constantly goofing around and making self-referential jokes. »

Horror comedies have been a mixed bag at the box office. You have the good: Ghostbusters and the Scary Movie franchise. You have the bad: Snakes on a Plane and Eight-Legged Freaks. And then you have the ugly: Jennifer's Body and Club Dread. In the case of this weekend, Zombieland seems destined to join the good. The film -- starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin as the last four humans stuck on a zombie-invested planet -- has been generating incredible buzz and is sure to win the weekend. How high it goes will depend on how »

In this 38 minute video presentation recorded live at b.Tween '09, David Bausola, Tom Himpe (Ag8) and Luke Scott (Scott Free) talk about their ambitious Blade Runner web-series franchise, Purefold and how it fits into the sphere of social media induced content creation (ie. "real-time online conversations from the audience, which are harvested through FriendFeed").
About Purefold:
"With a central theme 'What does it mean to be human?', the franchise explores the subject of empathy - a shared theme with Ridley Scott’s most compelling Science Fiction movie, Blade Runner.
The franchise contains infinite interlinked story lines, turned into short-format episodes by Ridley Scott Associate Films’ global talent pool of directors, and informed by real-time online conversations from the audience, which are harvested through FriendFeed, the world’s leading 'life streaming' technology.

That master juggler of the high concept and the low budget Larry Cohen has had a bit of a late surge of telecommunications-themed thrillers. The latest example is Messages Deleted, and you can check out the trailer here.Cohen of course, is the director of It's Alive, Return to Salem's Lot and Q The Winged Serpent, but he's as well known for his screenplays as his talent behind a camera. Phone Booth was directed by Batman villain Joel Schumacher, and Cellular by former stuntman David R Ellis, who went on to Snakes on a Plane and The Final Destination. Time will tell if such dizzy heights await Rob Cowan; lately a producer by trade, although he's credited as First Ad on Stakeout and Cocktail.Messages Deleted stars Deborah Unger, whose presence doesn't help this not feel a bit like The Game, and Matthew Lillard as the screenplay writer (and college lecturer, »

Cinematical has received three exclusive teaser posters for Women In Trouble, that filthy, good-for-nothing tramp of a film from writer-director Sebastian Gutierrez (Snakes on a Plane) that's caused quite the stir online with its provocative tone and Carla Gugino awesomeness. Described as a serpentine day in the life of ten seemingly disparate women, the film dishes out one of those multi-layered storylines full of sex, intrigue and a damn whole lotta trouble. Co-starring alongside Gugino are a bevy of Hollywood's most underrated seductresses, like Marley Shelton, Adrianne Palicki, Cameron Richardson, Connie Britton and my personal favorite, Emmanuelle Chriqui. And if those names aren't enough to turn you on, then maybe the promise of assless spandex pants and this behind-the-scenes video will.
Still not convinced? Here, our own Jette Kernion said this about Women In Trouble from its SXSW premiere: "Women in Trouble is a fun addition to the current trend »

Kenan Thompson has been a man who has been making us laugh for many years, from his Nickelodeon days on Kenan & Kel to films like Barbershop 2: Back In Business and Snakes on a Plane. The comedic actor also stars on Saturday Night Live, which comes back with its new season premiere on September 26 at 11:30 Pm Et with host Megan Fox and musical guest U2 and he's also guest-starring on an episode of the popular USA Network hit Psych, which will air the night before on Friday, September 25 at 10 Pm Et on the USA Network. Thompson recently held a conference call to talk about both endeavors, and here's what he had to say.
I wanted to ask you first of all a Psych question. They said that your character is one of an A cappella group. Do you actually have a good singing voice and will we hear it in the episode? »

New York — It was somewhat fitting that Cobra Starship were tapped to headline Friday night's Taco Bell-sponsored pre-vma soiree at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza. After all, they are unapologetically about as cheesy as a platter of Nachos Bell Grande.
Still, the Cobras are most certainly doing something right. Last month, their third album, Hot Mess, debuted at #4 on the Billboard albums chart. The first single off that record, the dance-floor packing, Leighton Meester-featuring "Good Girls Go Bad," just surpassed the million-download mark, giving the band their first platinum plaques. Oh, and they're nominated for a pair of Moonmen at Sunday's 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, including Best Pop Video.
