Filthy-mouthed Jonah Hill might want to feast on a bar of soap or two if he plans on wooing the lady folk -- which is apparently next on his cinematic to-do list.
According to Variety, the "Get Him To The Greek" and "Superbad" star is producing and starring in "The Best Thing About Pam Rooney," a romantic comedy to be written and executive produced by Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O'Brien. Plot details remain under wraps, though the film is described as a "high-concept romantic comedy."
Cohen and O'Brien are both relatively untested when it comes to screenwriting -- their script "Moving In" is currently set up at Montecito Picture Co. and Paramount with Cohen as director -- but Variety nonetheless calls them out as alumni of Judd Apatow's "comedy factory." The pair co-produced "Funny People" and also worked on "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. »

Who has time to go to the movies, darling, when there’s all those fashion shows to attend and fabulous celebrities to stalk? But did you know that DVDs are for more than porn? Ich had no idea. So instead of the disgusting multiplex, where it’s all proles and unfabulous people anyway, you can stay in your magnificent Austrian bunker and still sound uber cool on Monday, when the press hounds you with questions about how you spent ihr Wochenende. When they ask, “Did sie see that Bruno movie?” you can tell them to bumsen off, you saw that Fälscher Sacha Baron Cohen in other roles instead. Instead Of: Bruno, in which Sacha Baron Cohen dons gayface in order to send up homophobia... The recent news, courtesy of Knoxville.com, that The Twilight Saga: New Moon will premiere at Tennessee's Pinnacle 18 in Turkey Creek seemed ... well, random. Sure, Jasper was in the Confederate Army. But in Texas. And we don't remember Knoxville being key to the Southern Vampire Wars.
Turns out the Pinnacle 18 has hosted a movie screening benefit for Variety the Children's Charity of Eastern Tennessee each year since 2003. In the past, big stars have attended — Brendan Fraser for Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D last year, and Will Ferrell for Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby in 2006. Who will attend for New Moon? That and other key details aren't yet known.
Also unknown is if the Knoxville event is the true premiere, or just an advance screening. We're having a hard time envisioning the full-blown red carpet and paparazzi madness taking place in this shopping center parking lot. »

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's »

One big-budget box office disappointment does not usually signal the end of a movie star's reign. The woeful under performance of Land of the Lost has observers looking for someone to blame, however, and Will Ferrell is under suspicion. Writing in the Los Angeles Times, columnist Patrick Goldstein suggests: "He's in danger of becoming the comedy equivalent of George Clooney, someone who enjoys a great deal of goodwill but who isn't actually a real movie star."
Goldstein doesn't provide his definition of a "real movie star," but in the context of his column, it clearly is all about the ability to open a big tent pole production to big box office numbers. Goldstein claims: "The verdict in Hollywood: Ferrell hasn't done a good job of managing his brand. [Adam] Sandler is the master of dumb hijinks. Eddie Murphy has become a cuddly family star. But who is Will Ferrell? No one knows anymore. »

I was hoping they could pull off taking a dramatic TV show and make it a relevant comedy. Thanks to great acting, and a humorous script, they did. Yes, I know, God forbid I say anything that is not amazingly positive about Judd Apatow. He’s the latest comedy golden boy and he’s brought us Knocked Up, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Pineapple Express. But he’s also been the guy behind Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Drillbit Taylor and Stepbrothers.
The first batch was funny, but you couldn’t pay me to go see the second bunch. (I tried to sit through Talladega Nights but failed.)
But now we have another film from a guy I really like: Mike Judge.
The film is called Extract, and we have the trailer for you below.
Mike Judge has been involved with such iconic funny stuff as Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill. High on fans’ niche/cult lists is his most excellent film Office Space - but one »

Bro-mance. (n., adj., v.)
1. Love between two heterosexual dudes that soars past regular friendship and does an intimate waltz around the line of platonic-ness
2. An alternative type of romance that, while it may at times be obstructed by women, will be rooted solely in the strong bond between two men
3. More than just friends…but not in that way
This list has been made in honor of the hilarious I Love You, Man, (go see it now!!!) but the truth is that the art of the bromance has actually existed for thousands of years; (maybe starting at Cain and Abel … or not). This special relationship has been continued by many great figures of cinema (like Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa), and the recognition continues to this very day. In these new times where “bro” is replacing the word “dude”, and as various words of “bro-cabulary” begin to assimilate themselves into our daily vernacular, »

We’ve long known that some straight men are in love with themselves. Now they’re making movies about straight men falling in love with each other – platonically, of course.
In fact, that’s almost all they’re making movies about. At least that’s what most film comedies seem to be about these days.
I Love You, Man, the new movie about a buddy-less man in search of a best male friend, is just the latest in a long string of comedies about heterosexual male bonding: Superbad, Step Brothers, Pineapple Express, Hitch, Grilled, Wild Hogs, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Tropic Thunder, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Blades of Glory, Wedding Crashers, and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
Then there are the movie comedies that sort of pretend to be about a guy falling in love with a woman, but are really about »

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg will team up for "The B Team," an action comedy Adam McKay will direct for Sony Pictures.
According to Variety, McKay will team up with Chris Henchy to write the script, which will focus on two cops played by Ferrell and Wahlberg.
Not much is known about the film at this stage, because the project is at the earliest developmental stage (so far, only a pitch exists).
McKay, of course, directed Ferrell in "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and "Step Brothers."
As for Henchy, he recently wrote the screenplay for Ferrell's upcoming adventure comedy "Land of the Lost." He also worked as a co-executive producer on "Entourage." »

Matt Damon will star in "The Adjustment Bureau" which is apparently a contemporary science fiction love story loosely based on a short story by Philip K. Dick. This reteaams Damon with his "Bourne Ultimatum" writer George Nolfi" who is also writing a fourth installment of the "Bourne" series of films for Universal. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are starring together in an action comedy helmed by Adam McKay ("Step Brothers," "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby"). The script is written by Chris Henchy and there are no details as yet as to what this one's about. Both projects should be pricey but sold by the end of this weeek. »

Happy Groundhog Day Boxwishers! Yes, today is the annual event so memorably celebrated in the classic Bill Murray comedy when groundhog Punxsutawney Phil is asked about the remaining length of the winter weather (see feature article here). I don’t think those of us in the UK need a cute critter to tell us there’s little spring sunshine today as the country is seriously snowed under. Here at Boxwish HQ it’s a winter wonderland fit for a Christmas card – absolutely beautiful, if not bloody cold. Oh, for those carefree days when a snow shower meant snowmen, snowball fights and the day off school… But for those of you brave enough to face the freeze, why not take a detour to the shops and grab yourself a new DVD? There are plenty of exciting ones out today, ranging from Will Ferrell comedy hijinks to car crunching chaos courtesy of Jason Statham. »

During an interview at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, Bill Hader has pointed out one interesting tidbit. To Chud, the "Saturday Night Live" actor who is in Sundance for Greg Mottola's "Adventureland" reveals that he and SNL writer Simon Rich have written a slasher movie for Judd Apatow.
On making the script for the man behind "Knocked Up" and "Superbad", Hader recalled, "Judd met with us and said 'I want to do a horror movie with you. I want to see you in a slasher movie.'" The 30-year-old further described the project's concept, explaining "It's partially Straw Dogs meets Halloween meets Home Alone meets Monster Squad."
While avoiding giving too much, he still noted, "It is definitely about guys nowadays, that idea that you watch f***ed up s*** on TV, how violence in our culture - this sounds really hoity toity - you watch f***ed up reality shows, »
