Directorially, Neo's best film, 1 December 2009
7/10
Author: ky_chong

This film, which examines the Singapore heartlanders' obsession with lotteries, is one of Jack Neo's best film. The directing is slightly better than even "I Not Stupid", which tends to be a bit televisionish and amateurish, although the script in the former film is more ambitious. At least here Jack Neo has no grandiose ambitions of being an art-house director ("Homerun"). The main thing is how the three characters do represent a slice of (admittedly rather drab - life in Singapore *is* rather drab) life in their guzzling of beer at coffee shops and dreaming of a better ie. richer future. The story will strike a chord in many heartlanders. The acting also is a notch up most Jack Neo's movies - and here Jack Neo must take some credit, because Low, Chen and the two Lees make a somewhat formidable line-up (in Singapore anyway). Also the story brings up the question whether one would betray a friend for the sake of money - something which might be pretty relevant when we work in an increasingly materialistic society. I think a good case can be made of it as being, together with "I Not Stupid 1 & 2", Jack Neo's best films.
