If you've seen Paris, je t'aime, you would know the basic concept of New York, I Love You. Some of the world's celebrated filmmakers create short tales of romance based in a metropolitan city, compiled in an anthology film. The stories stand on their own, but connected together by the common theme of love and the mood of its location.
What's different—and consequently better—about New York, I Love You is that the individual stories are interconnected, to illustrate a web of people that links New Yorkers in unexpected ways. It could be that two strangers hail the same cab, or go to the same Chinese laundromat, or know the same pharmacist. Furthering these links is Emilie Ohana, playing a video artist who circles the city with a video camera and continually runs into the other characters.
Unlike the segmented and showcasey Paris, je t'aime, this film is much more fluid. »

In celebration of the release of Jane Campion's Bright Star and as an homage to the love affair passionately captured in heartfelt correspondence between a then unknown poet John Keats and his stylish "minx," Fanny Brawne, Apparition has launched a national online user-generated contest for the most romantic love letter or "Little Tweet Nothing" presented by A Diamond is Forever (Adif) and Montblanc.
The love letters between British Poet John Keats and his muse, Fanny Brawne are legend, and have been fodder for romantics for almost two centuries. Written and directed by Academy Award winner Jane Campion, Bright Star centers on this grand romance and stars Ben Whishaw (The International, I'm Not There) as Keats and Abbie Cornish (Stop Loss, Elizabeth: The Golden Age) as Brawne. The film, which premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival to astounding audience response, will open September 18.

The fall movie season is upon us, and there are some interesting choices out there, the first of which are hitting theaters right now. For autumn, get ready for a host of films that will ramp up the creep factor...before destroying the Earth (one film isn't just opening in the fall, it's about the fall—the fall of humanity, that is), after which we'll find ourselves visiting another planet.
For those who like horror, there's several choices, typically mixed with either humor or romance. You'll have flesh eating zombies in Zombieland (read our early review here), the Devil in drag in Jennifer's Body and effete vampires in New Moon. Meanwhile, another dark subject appears in the form of the posthumous tribute of sorts to Michael Jackson in This Is It; you might say horrific given the circumstances and timing.
And, of course, if all that's not disturbing enough (and let's face it, »

Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett suffered a minor head injury when performing on stage Wednesday, September 2. The Queen Elizabeth I of "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" was hit by a property during her "A Streetcar Named Desire" performance at The Sydney Theatre Company (Stc), the Australian Associated Press (Aap) reported.
Blanchett, who takes the role of Blanche DuBois on the show, was performing a scene with Joel Edgerton, who plays Stanley Kowalski, when the incident happened. The theater's spokesman, Tim McKeough said that Blanchett was hit by a radio prop. "There was a minor incident on stage that unfortunately did injure Cate," he said.
A member of the audience, as reported by Sydney Morning Herald, recalled that Edgerton accidentally hit Blanchett with a '60s-style radio, adding that audience could see Blanchett's blood streaming down her head. "He [Edgerton] was supposed to throw it [the radio] out the window, but it sort of slipped and hit her in the head, »

This would be the first time for tMF to dive into uncharted waters and dwell into the Awards season and launch its very own OscarWatch. But we shall focus on what we've been known for - the often unheralded young talents!
In our first OscarWatch: Best Actress Contenders, we put the spotlight on two relatively newcomers- Carey Mulligan and Abbie Cornish. Abbie Cornish, is praised for her role in Jane Campion's Bright Star and we believe she ought to be recognized for her lead performance as Fanny Brawne.
Says Katya Foreman: The 26-year-old Australian actress has received rave reviews for her performance, which is in competition at the Cannes International Film Festival and traces the ill-fated romance between Brawne and her neighbor, the 19th-century poet John Keats (played by Ben Whishaw).

This is probably the most difficult Top 10 rankings I ever did - more difficult than the updated Top 10 for the actors. I have to find a balance wherein I give proper credit to certain actresses who have already established themselves and are already well-known by fans and ordinary moviegoers vis-a-vis those who have yet to boast of a growing list of followers, but has shown such unforgettable and powerful acting in some very impressive recently released films. At the end of the day, what really matters is that - at this moment - it was her name and her performances that moviegoers and critics alike are talking and raving about. - - -
# 10 - Isild Le Besco: France’s multi-award winning and multi-talented actress Isild le Besco is hot on the heels of Romola Garai in our Top 50 hottest young actresses at #10. Says film critic Marcy Dermansky:

Cate Blanchett is attached to star in Joe Wright's upcoming "Indian Summer," the big-screen adaptation of Alex von Tunzelmann's book of the same title.
Von Tunzelmann's story chronicles the final days of Britain's colonial rule in India, as Lord Mountbatten is sent to watch over the transition of power to Jawaharlal Nehru.
Variety reports Blanchett will play Lady Edwina Mountbatten. William Nicholson, whose credits include "Gladiator" and "Elizabeth: The Golden Age," wrote the script.
Oscar winner Blanchett was last seen in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." She is currently filming "Robin Hood" for Ridley Scott. Wright last directed "The Soloist." »

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's »

A R Rahman is Hot property in Hollywood but the legendary music composer has turned down most offers that came his way, post his double whammy for Slumdog Millionaire at the Oscars! Reason? He wanted to do something contemporary, light and different. Unlike both Slumdog and Elizabeth: The Golden Age (1997).
When the offer he was looking for came his way, Rahman agreed to composed music for the light hearted romantic movie titled ‘Couples Retreat’ to be directed by Peter Billingsley. The film stars Kristen Bell, Malin Akerman, Jason Bateman, Vince Vaughn amongst others.
‘Couples Retreat’ will be Rahman’s first completely (full-fledged) western score and as the maestro himself claims, it will be done in “his way”. Read More »

Principal photography began Monday on Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures' epic action adventure Clash of the Titans, being directed by Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk). The film stars Sam Worthington (upcoming Terminator Salvation and Avatar) and Academy Award® nominees Liam Neeson (Taken, Schindler's List) and Ralph Fiennes (the Harry Potter films, The English Patient).
In Clash of the Titans, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. »

While this is not normal Qe fare, the photography and the possibilities of the storyline are just way too good to pass up. Shekhar Kapur is known for Elizabeth: The Golden Age and we all know who Julia Stiles is. Not many details are available on this, in fact it's not even listed in IMDb, but we've come across the first trailer and it's quite stunning. Let's just hope it ain't a chick flick.

As I was writing up the latest Robin Hood casting news, it occurred to me that Ridley Scott's film will undoubtedly play fast and loose with the Plantagenets. (A historical film that alters the facts? No!) I decided I didn't care -- for now, anyway.
When it comes to historical films, I'm maddeningly hot and cold. There are films I forgive even the most glaring errors because the story (real and cinematically whitewashed) is good, or because it spurred me into research I never recovered from. Braveheart and 300 both fall into that category, as does Elizabeth Taylor's Cleopatra.
Then there are films that leave me furious, such as Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth, which is just so inaccurate as to be bizarre. Actually, films dealing with the Tudors in general tend to infuriate me (I'm looking at you, The Other Boleyn Girl), possibly because it's so well documented and »

Coming to Jonathan Ross' Friday night show on BBC to talk about his upcoming film "The Boat That Rocked", Rhys Ifans ended up revealing his involvement in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". The 40-year-old actor confirmed that he has been cast in the adaptation of "Harry Potter" seventh book.
During his appearance on the TV show, Ifans told Ross that a couple of weeks ago while he was filming "Mr. Nice" in Spain, he has been fitted for his costume in the latest installment of the "Harry Potter" series. While the Robert Reston of "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" did not mention which part he will be starring as, The Leaky Cauldron reported that he will be taking the role of Xenophilius "Xeno" Lovegood, who is known to be Luna Lovegood's father and the editor-in-chief of The Quibbler.
