DVD review: Ice Age 3 - Dawn of the Dinosaurs

26 November 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Fox, rental and retail

Even in its third helping, Ice Age retains its freshness to a remarkable degree.

This one works more satisfactorily than part two, with the addition of dinosaurs living in a lovingly realised underworld, and is nicely balanced between thrills, spills and cute critters for the kids and some witty lines for the rest of us. As ever, it's topped and tailed by Scrat's search for an acorn, a running gag and virtual Holy Grail of the series, and a nod to Tex Avery and the Warners shorts.

This series is particularly strong on background and perspective. The notable additional character is voiced by Simon Pegg – he gets in everywhere this year – as a prehistoric weasel. Series regular Carlos Saldanha is again co-director, and with this one making $196m in the Us, there may well be more to come. Smart and inventive, it compares extremely well with the tired Shrek the Third. »

'Shrek Forever After' to Be Last 'Shrek' Film ... for Now

26 November 2009 12:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I have a personal kink when it comes to a good old fashioned fairy tale subversion. I can't explain it, but there's just something about messing with those classic tales that never fails to amuse me -- so you can see why I have a soft spot for the Shrek franchise. News of a fourth film first hit back in 2007 and now USA Today gives us our first look at the fairy tale comedy, as well as (good?) news that the fourth installment of the franchise, Shrek Forever After, will be the last (and as much as I liked the first two films, I'll admit that by the time we had reached Shrek the Third, the charm was wearing a little thin).

Bill Damaschke, head of creative production at DreamWorks and Mike Mitchell (Sky High) gave some hints as to what we should expect from Shrek Forever After, and according to Mitchell, »

First Look at the Fourth (and Final) 'Shrek'

25 November 2009 5:49 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

We have our first look at the fourth Shrek movie - Shrek Forever After - courtesy of USA Today. That's the big green ogre below and, apparently, Clay Aiken?

It's a slightly more realistic look than previous versions of Shrek, and there's a good reason for that: The fourth movie will be in 3-D. A lot of that going around these days. And that's not Clay Aiken but rather Rumplestiltskin, who has made brief appearances before in the series. The character will not have a celebrity voice, but is instead brought to life by Walt Dohrn from the Shrek story department.

The May 21, 2010 release date is also the last time we'll have a new Shrek feature in theaters, according to the article. Of course, there's also the Puss in Boots movie with Antonio Banderas, which has been in the works for years now, but DreamWorks is retiring one of the most successful animated franchise ever, »

First look at Shrek Forever After, which will be the last Shrek film

25 November 2009 1:18 PM, PST | Filmonic.com | See recent Filmonic news »

USA Today got the first official image from Shrek Forever After, which they say will be the last outing for Shrek and the gang. It had to end at some point, and I got the feeling they were running low on creative steam during Shrek the Third. However, they plan to finish on a high: “All [...] »

Shrek Forever After Synopsis & First Image

25 November 2009 12:11 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Ever since Dreamworks Animation announced their line-up for 2009-2012 earlier this year, there seems to have been a distinct lack of info coming out about arguably their biggest upcoming film, the fourth installment in the highly successful Shrek franchise, this time entitled Shrek Forever After (previously Shrek Goes Fourth). More focus has been placed on the spin-off film, Puss In Boots, particularly with voice star Antonio Banderas giving us some insight into what characters will appear in the movie, etc…

However, today, thanks to USA Today, we have our first look at Shrek Forever After, as well as the first in-depth synopsis of the film. Unfortunately the image isn’t high-res, or even that big of a size, but it nonetheless give us our first look at the film which may or may not be highly-anticipated after the critical failure that was Shrek the Third. Here’s the synopsis, as »

‘Shrek Forever After’ Plot Details!

25 November 2009 10:26 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

It’s been known for some time that Shrek Forever After, the fourth and final installment in the Shrek series, is in the works, but very little had been said about what exactly the last film would focus on.

The third film ended with the birth of Shrek and Fiona’s ogre-babies, so it could be assumed that the fourth movie would follow up on the family life of the Shrek clan.

Well, plot details have finally come out, and Shrek Forever After does follow Shrek’s life as family man, but not in the most happily-ever-after way.

Instead, Shrek feels he has become too domesticated. The ogre that used to send villagers running in terror has become a local celebrity, with those who were formerly afraid of him seeking autographs from the big green guy.

Shrek strikes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin to get his edge back which, if you know the story of Rumpelstiltskin, »

Official Synopsis and First Arts of Final 'Shrek' Movie Released

25 November 2009 2:00 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

"Shrek Forever After" is starting to get in shape with the release of the promotional arts and the official synopsis. In the first still of the fourth film, the beloved green ogre is pictured with Rumpelstiltskin, the little troublemaker who made brief appearances in "Shrek 2" and "Shrek the Third". There's also a look of a smiling Donkey who is voiced once again by Eddie Murphy.

"Forever After" will see Shrek striking a deal with Rumpelstiltskin to regain his ogre mojo. After getting hitched to ogress Fiona and having triplets, Shrek "has lost his roar" that used to send villagers running away in terror. "Now they run to him and ask him to sign their pitchforks and torches," said director Mike Mitchell.

According to USA Today that got a hand of the stills, the pact will go awry and "Shrek must confront what life would be like in Far Far »

'Avatar,' Woody Allen And A Tweet From Prison In Today's Twitter-Wood

24 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

If you read Twitter-Wood for the pictures, you picked a good day to stop by, because I've got a veritable Twitter slideshow set up for you today, starting with a Woody Allen jazz performance and including but not limited to Emmy Rossum in a turkey hat and Shakira hobnobbing with Larry King.

You may or may not have known that "Pulp Fiction" writer Roger Avary was currently serving time at Ventura County Jail in California. His tweets from inside recently came to my attention, such today's where he introduces a new neighbor. Check those posts out after the jump along with Richard Kelly's question about "Avatar," Dane Cook's problem with Adam Lambert and Michael Showalter's feelings about "Bad Lieutenant." It's all in the Twitter Report for November 24, 2009.

New Moon enters new phase for Twilight franchise

24 November 2009 4:01 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The UK has officially caught Stephenie Meyer fever after The Twilight Saga: New Moon's strident opening weekend, and the Coens' A Serious Man deals another little cut to star prestige

The winner

When the original Twilight movie arrived in the UK last December, it opened with a decent £2.51m – not a bad number, considering Stephenie Meyer's books had yet to achieve blockbuster status. But it was far, far behind the Us debut figure for the picture: $69.6m (£42.1m).

What a difference a year makes. With the first Twilight film a huge phenomenon on DVD, and the Meyer books belatedly reaching a wide UK readership, Edward Cullen and Bella Swan have ascended to iconic characters here, and Britain has succumbed to R-Pattz mania. Now sequel New Moon has debuted in the UK with £11.68m, which is a whopping 4.6 times the opening weekend of the original film. In three days, »

Fast National ratings for Friday, November 20, 2009.   Although CBS still scored a comfortable overall win on Friday night, ABC's broadcast of "Shrek the Third" and a solid "20/20" performance helped get the network a split in the key demographic.   Among adults 18-49, ABC and CBS both averaged a 1.9 rating. NBC's 1.4 rating was third, followed by the 1.0 rating for Fox. The CW trailed in the key demographic with a 1.0 rating.   Overall, though, CBS averaged an estimated 8.03 million viewers to go with a 5.1 rating/9 share to win the night. NBC was second with... »

Justin Timberlake Said Lending Voice for 'Family Guy'

20 November 2009 10:44 PM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Words on the street are, Justin Timberlake is making a contribution to Primetime Emmy Awards-winning sitcom "Family Guy". Us Magazine got the scoop that on Friday, November 20, the former member of boy band Nsync was in a recording studio in Los Angeles to lend his voice for an episode of the Fox's animated series.

On the recording, a source told the publication, "Justin was quiet, seemed professional - he was in and out. He seems like he's got a great sense of humor so I'm sure he did an awesome job on the show." There is no word on whether he will voice a character made for him or portraying himself. When the episode featuring him will get the air time is yet to be disclosed as well.

Should the story is true, this won't be Justin's first in lending his voice to a cartoon character. Back in 2001, he played »

'New Moon' Reactions, Oprah And Birthdays For Larry King And P. Diddy In Today's Twitter-Wood

Oprah's announcement that her show may end its 25-season run in 2011 was almost enough to unseat "New Moon" as the top trending topic of the Twitter-Wood feed today. Kevin Nealon and Wil Wheaton both had a opinions on her possible bow out of syndication, while Eli Roth and Kevin Smith helped keep "Twilight" alive in Twitter conversation.

Two big names celebrated birthdays last night in very public fashion, as P. Diddy entertained a few folks on my follow list and Larry King got a little rowdy in my pick for Twitter Pic of the Day. Ten of the best for Klausner, Adams

19 November 2009 10:17 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Josh Klausner, co-writer of Shrek the Third and writer of next year’s comedy Date Night, is about to start work on adapting the novel The Ten Best Days Of My Life, by Adena Halpern. The story concerns a woman who has to win a place in the top level of heaven by recounting the titular ten days.

Amy Adams, most recently seen in Julie and Julia and next month’s Moonlight Serenade, is set to star and produce. Directing and co-producing will be Shawn Levy, best known for Night at the Museum 1 and 2, the latter of which featured Adams.

Levy also directed the afore-mentioned Fox movie Date Night, closing the loop nicely. Read THR’s article here.

Party Favors: Seeing Red

18 November 2009 1:51 AM, PST | Quick Stop | See recent Quick Stop news »

Chicago - We’re approaching an entertainment apocalypse as the new four horsemen arrive on the hill: Redbox, Comcast, Marketeers and Spencer Pratt. In a decade, we’re going to be watching puppet shows on network TV and not even Jeff Dunham level puppet shows. But let’s give a run down of trainwrecks that will claim the lives of entertainment business models.

Redbox is a simple concept - a kiosk that allows you to rent a hot new DVD title for a $1 a day. There will be 20,000 of them across the country in grocery stores, drugstores and Wal-marts by the end of the year. They’re a mini-Blockbuster that’s doesn’t required a zit-faced dreamer to run the register. What’s the problem with Redbox? It’s killing to DVD sales market faster than Blockbuster and Netflix. Having Redbox inside Wal-Mart wrecks the impulse buying temptation of the giant sale bin. »

Big Surprise: Top Grossing Movies of the Decade Are Basically All Franchise Films

17 November 2009 3:14 PM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Here's another list for you to digest as we approach the end of the decade. Jason Kottke [1] recently took a look at the list of highest-grossing films from 2000-2009 courtesy of Wikipedia [2], and makes the observation that only one movie in the top 20 is based on an original screenplay. The rest of the movies are all adaptations of books or sequels to existing franchises. Now, it's pretty easy to jump on this list and whine and moan about how it means there is nothing original in Hollywood anymore. While I agree that there is a problem with studios valuing brand over concept, don't forget, we are talking about the movies that made the most money here. Of Course familiar characters and titles are going to attract more viewers than strange and unfamiliar ones... doesn't that make sense? A lot of people don't even see movies at the theatre, so they »

First ‘Date Night Trailer Released

13 November 2009 4:10 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Those looking to get a glimpse at next year’s NBC Thursday primetime lineup-inspired hybrid film are in luck as 20th Century Fox has release the first trailer for the upcoming Steve Carell and Tina Fey romantic, action, comedy film Date Night.

This marks the first film by director Shawn Levy since his box office hits Night at the Museum and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian raked in over $1 Billion. Not only does Levy have a new film, but also a script written by the talented Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Ocean’s Thirteen) with revisions by Josh Klausner (Shrek The Third), Simon Kinberg (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) and Aline Bros McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada). (You may remember the names Simon Kinberg and Aline Brosh McKenna as they are the writing team to sell a $2 million film pitch to Paramount with J.J. Abrams.)

Mathematicians find formula for a hit sequel

8 November 2009 3:17 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Calculation aims to take risk out of deciding whether follow-ups to cinema hits will be a sure thing, or a disastrous gamble

Ever wondered why Spider-Man 2 triumphed and Basic Instinct 2 bombed? Now a group of academics have come up with a mathematical formula to predict the fortunes of a film sequel.

Hollywood has long known a follow-up is a fairly safe bet and franchises from Pirates of the Caribbean to Star Wars have dominated cinema schedules for years. But until now decisions about what to invest in a sequel or how much to pay for rights to a franchise have been based on some simple rules of thumb and a good dose of gut feeling.

Based on factors such as whether key stars are still on board, how long it has been since the last film and how that performed, the researchers say they can calculate what producers can »

Faris, Aykroyd, and Timberlake in ‘Yogi Bear’

6 November 2009 12:55 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Anna Faris, Dan Aykroyd, and Justin Timberlake are in negotiations for Warner Bros’ live-action/CGI hybrid feature Yogi Bear.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Faris will play Rachel, a nature documentary filmmaker shooting Yogi and Boo-Boo for her next project.  Though her last movie was voice work for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Faris’ character will be a live-action performance.

Aykroyd will lend the voice of Yogi Bear, the picnic basket-stealing menace to Jellystone Park.  Timberlake will provide the vocals for Boo-Boo, his bow-tied sidekick.  Both bears are expected to remain pantless.  No word on which lucky actor gets to play the Park Ranger.  Is Jason Lee available for a paycheck?

WB is planning to shoot it in New Zealand next month with director Eric Bravig (Journey to the Center of the Earth).  I bet you can’t wait to hear the range Timberlake exhibits in this one.  Shrek the Third »
