Actor Bradley Cooper has been cast as the lead in director Neil Burger's (The Illusionist) latest thriller, Dark Fields, replacing Shia Labeouf, who was originally up for the role. Cooper will play a struggling writer who experiments with Mdt-48, a drug that helps him tap into his brain's full potential, making him smarter and more charismatic. However, it also has some negative side-effects, such as headaches, blackouts, and violence. After his supply of the drug runs low, he goes in search of more only to discover its origins are deadlier than he could imagine.
Described as being in the same vein as The Game and Fight Club, the Dark Fields screenplay was adapted from Alan Glynn's book of the same name by Leslie Dixon (The Heartbreak Kid). Dixon, Scott Kroopf, and Relativity Media's Ryan Kavanaugh are producing, with Relativity's Tucker Tooley acting as executive producer.

Actress Malin Akerman's career has been on an upward trajectory since her breakout role on the short-lived Lisa Kudrow series The Comeback. Since then, Akerman has gone psycho in The Heartbreak Kid with Ben Stiller, played a superhero in Zack Snyder's Watchmen, and is currently starring in one of this year's biggest comedy hits, Couples Retreat.
In the October issue of 944 magazine, Akerman talked about some of her upcoming projects and discussed the price of fame. For her next film, she's taking a break from comedy for a dramatic role.
Yes, The Bang Bang Club — it's based on a true story of two photojournalists' journey through the end of Apartheid — I play the photo editor. The story's incredible and it's really raw. We used a lot of locals and shot in all the same places where things happened.
Akerman will return to comedy in writer-director Josh Radnor's HappyThankYouMorePlease, »

Late last week, my girlfriend and I plopped onto the couch to watch "Trucker," Michelle Monaghan's indie flick that has been doing the film festival circuit since debuting at Tribeca in 2008. I'd be sitting down with the actress the next day—a day before the movie was set to get a theatrical release—and some kind marketing folks had sent the DVD my way.
Within the first few seconds of "Trucker," there's Monaghan vigorously, vociferously gettin' busy in a motel room. My girlfriend wondered aloud just what kind of movie I'd brought home, while I, I must confess, was hooked. So was Monaghan, as I'd find out when she stopped by the MTV News offices to chat.
"I don't even have to read the rest of the script before I say yes," she laughed when I asked about that first scene.
But it was really what came after—a »

I was completely honest with actress Michelle Monaghan yesterday when I told her, right at the beginning of a one-on-one interview, that I'd been waiting a long time to watch her come alive in a role. In her relatively short career, Monaghan has already racked up quite the resume -- appearing in films like Mission Impossible III, Gone Baby Gone, The Bourne Supremacy, The Heartbreak Kid and Made of Honor. She's got a great, girl-next-door quality about her, but is she memorable? The good news here is that Monaghan finally delivered the sort of performance I've known was trapped somewhere inside her, hidden behind a variety of big, flashy Hollywood films. Make no mistake, this is her film. She owns it. But is that enough to convince you to see it?
In Trucker, she plays Diane, a female truck driver with »

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this weekend, but the idea of just lying on a tropical beach -- even if you have to pretend the sofa is made of sand -- sounds so much more appealing. But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you see Couples Retreat this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I reminded myself of the time when Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn had something actually funny and interesting to say.” Instead Of: Couples Retreat, a would-be comedy about four couples who take a vacation at a tropical resort that turns out less paradisiacal than any of them would have liked... Watch: If you really must have have more not-very-funny grossout “romantic” “comedies” set amongst palm trees and beautiful beaches, you’re »

An actor's career is more than just the sum of their most memorable catch-phrases, but that's sometimes the best they can hope for. Ask the typical movie nerd what comes to mind when they think of Al Pacino, and nine out of ten of them will yell back in a regrettable Cuban accent, "Say hello to my little friend!" Nowhere is this more true than in comedy. Steve Martin could win a dozen Oscars and he'll still be remembered as the guy who says "Excuuuuuuuse me." Mike Myers will be asking the rhetorical question "Do I make you horny?" six nights a week on the inevitable Indian casino tour of his future. And Steve Carell, long after The Office is just a distant memory, will never stop being asked to repeat "That's what she said" like a comedy parrot. But consider poor Malin Akerman. Her career is still in its infancy, »

You may know Michelle Monaghan as the girl from The Heartbreak Kid, or Eagle Eye, or a half a dozen other studio movies in which she's good, but definitely not the main character or the focus of the story. Sadly, that's par for the course for a lot of Hollywood actresses, who frequently get stuck playing the girlfriend or the sidekick without ever getting a chance to show how talented they really are. But Michelle Monaghan has found a way to get the attention she deserves-- going independent. This weekend she stars in the teeny tiny indie Trucker, the debut feature from writer-director James Mottern, starring Monaghan as long-haul truck driver Diane. She's spent the last 10 years living a carefree life that involves a lot of drinking and a lot of different men, and barely stopping to think about the 11-year-old son (Jimmy Bennett) she's left to be raised by »

There are times when Ben Stiller seems to own comedy. It.s an odd notion considering the guy.s made some pretty mediocre films (Envy, The Heartbreak Kid). But often enough, he releases something that hits all of the right notes and makes you realize just how talented he truly his (Tropic Thunder, Mystery Men). The dude.s got a grasp on absurdist satire. That.s why it.s not a surprise to see the video that Movieline has gotten hold of. It.s an exclusive and likely never supposed to be seen video that has Stiller tearing 20th Century Fox a new one, as well as himself. In the video, Stiller takes shots at Fox.s executives, their rich and artistic library of movies (Explosion! Explosion! Wave!), but gives Slumdog Millionaire a pass. The video was likely made for employees at his production company Red Hour as well as »

In the movies, happy Couples are boring. At the least, they don’t tend to make us laugh. (Yes, I’m sure there’s an example somewhere that will prove me wrong). But here’s a group of pairings that are going to focus on the “fun” of “dysfunctional marriages” and (hopefully) bring more laughter than pain in Couples Retreat. Coming out this October, the comedy about friends going together to a type of relationship rehab stars Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman, Watchmen’s Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis and Faizon Love, to name a few.
Call me crazy, but there’s no way that Couples Retreat could be a disaster. Despite the somewha chaotic characters of the film, the cast members are nothing but a harmonious chorus of comedy – a plethora of funny personalities that have shown off their laugh stripes numerous times before. Even Malin Akerman »

Eastbound and Down is a half-hour sitcom that is executive produced by Will Ferrell and airs on HBO. That should give you pretty good idea of what to expect. HBO is the home of the delightful Flight of the Conchords (reviewed here) and popular dramas such as Sex and the City, Deadwood, Rome, Six Feet Under and Entourage. In other words, its specialty is adult entertainment. Will Ferrell, meanwhile, has shown in the likes of Anchorman that he has a penchant for risqué material like. Eastbound and Down is definitely that.
The basic premise of Eastbound and Down is a familiar one: white-trash slob meets people who are at least half-decent and somewhat intelligent. Result: hysterics. Well, intermit laughs, anyway. In this case the slob is former baseball star Kenny Powers. At the start of Chapter One of Eastbound we get a whizbang trip through his rise to fame as »

The grim, noir laced phantasmagoria of faded superhero's and the various inter-personal demons they battle known as Watchmen has finally – after two decades of false starts – arrived on screen and man alive, is it an ambitious picture. Under the, um, watchful eye of director Zack Snyder, the same bloodthirsty stylist who brought you 300 and the controversial but otherwise pulse pounding Dawn Of The Dead remake, has taken great pains to ensure that the movie remains as faithful to writer Alan Moore’s text and artist David Gibbons’ illustrations as humanly possible, giving us a near 3 hour, ultra nihilistic and hyper intellectual audio and visual dark fantasy epic that is as bold, ballsy and brilliant as it is uneven and demanding.
Watchmen paints an abstract portrait of a world teetering on the brink of destruction. It's 1985. Nixon is in his fifth presidential term and cold war tensions between Russia and the »

Now here's a ragtag group of comedic actors. MGM has picked up John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and, if they're lucky, Clark Duke to star in their upcoming comedy Hot Tub Time Machine.

Robinson for Hot Tub Time Machine Directed by Steve Pink, Hot Tub Time Machine follows a group of friends who are frustrated when they return to a ski lodge where they partied as teens. They then get in a hot tub -- which happens to be a time machine -- and get transported to 1987.
While everybody should know John Cusack, the other three names might not ring a bell for some. Rob Corddry recently left The Daily Show to pursue a career in acting. So far he's been doing pretty well with films such as Semi-Pro, The Heartbreak Kid, Blades of Glory and many more. »

Dreamworks Animation doesn't waste any time in planning to dominate the Thanksgiving weekend, even the one that won't happen till 2010. They're going to do it with fun little concept for a movie called "Master Mind" which is about a super villain who loses his life's purpose when he accidentally kills his superhero nemesis. Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller, and Tina Fey are all in negotiations to provide voice work for the film. I'm never sure how excited I should get for voice work. Yes, I'm a fan of these three (although certainly Downey and Fey more than Stiller; Downey and Fey didn't subject me to "The Heartbreak Kid") but they're not actually in the movie. Sometimes I want the professional voice actor like Tara Strong or Rob Paulsen. But I guess you can't really slap their name up on the marquee. Still, I'm sure Downey, Stiller, ... »
