- We caught up with Justin Ambrosino, an up-and-coming filmmaker (and at one time, a reporter on this website) to discuss his latest short-film. The 8th Samurai has been making the rounds on the film festival circuit and has managed to garner several awards along the way including the "Best of Fest" Award at the La Shorts Fest. The talented NY filmmaker, and AFI graduate, has been involved with an impressive range of productions in the past; from George Clooney's solid but little known faux-reality series "Unscripted", to Scorsese's "The Departed" (to name a few stand-out titles). Regardless of the roll he played on those sets, his ambition has always been to write and direct. Clearly, he's off to a strong start. As you may have gathered from the title, "The 8th Samurai" takes a "what if?" look at the behind-the-scene happenings of Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai". Chicago – “Orphan” is a surprisingly effective thriller that delivers exactly what audiences should expect from it. This is B-movie filmmaking elevated by A-list actors Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard in a clever mix of honest emotion and ridiculous, over-the-top, “Mommie Dearest”-esque insanity. The film deserved a better Blu-Ray release.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
In theaters, some questioned whether or not the more ridiculous moments in “Orphan” were meant to be played for laughs or horror. I honestly don’t care. Movies are enjoyable for what they are, not what they mean to be. And I enjoyed “Orphan”. It runs way too long and features lot twists that stretch credulity but it is as genuinely intriguing and entertaining as any of the adult thrillers released this past summer.
Orphan was released on DVD, Blu-Ray, On Demand and Digital Download on October 27th, 2009.

Hiring Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin to host the 82nd Academy Awards was as wise a decision as tapping Ricky Gervais to host the Golden Globes was ill-advised. Martin has hosted twice before, in 2000 and 2002, to some acclaim. Born entertainer that he is, he wrote smart jokes and nailed their timing. There were none of the groaners that bedeviled Dave Letterman (Uma, Oprah?), Ellen DeGeneres, or Hugh Jackman. But at the same time there was something reluctant and distant and maybe a little bit judgmental to his demeanor. For viewers with a healthy cynicism about the grandiosity and self-importance of Hollywood’s annual onanistic kudo-orgy, Martin was among Oscar’s best hosts. But he rubbed Oscar die-hards the wrong way. Baldwin, meanwhile, has never hosted the Oscars, but this year’s producers seem to think he’ll provide the appropriate counterweight to Martin. The last ten years have left some salt in his hair, »

Three new cast members have joined the cast of Let Me In, the remake/adaptation of the Swedish film Let The Right One In.
Elias Koteas will play a policeman, Cara Buono is set to play as Owen's mother and Sasha Barrese is Virginia. The three new members join Kodi Smit-McPhee and Chloe Moretz.
An official press release points out, "The filmmakers note that while the new film will pay respect to the original Swedish version, they intend to forge a unique identity for Let Me In, placing it firmly in an American context."
Although there are many people who are pessimistically opposed to the remake/adaptation, President and CEO of Hammer films had this to say, "This project is very personal to Matt as it is to the many passionate fans of the original story... The brilliance of that story deserves to be seen by audiences on a wide »

Back in May, we heard about the Frank Sinatra biopic that Martin Scorsese will be directing with Universal producing. Now mega-stars Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney are rumored (courtesy of UK newspaper The Guardian) to be in contention for the role of Old Blue Eyes. It's probably important to note here that Clooney's rep, Stan Rosenfeld, told EW, "I wouldn't believe anything I read in British papers" -- which isn't exactly a denial -- while a Universal rep said the studio had no comment. (Reps for DiCaprio and Depp were not immediately available for comment.) Fact or fiction, »

Here’s the new trailer for Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest movie, “Shutter Island“. Also starring Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Max von Sydow, Jackie Earle Hale and Emily Mortimer.
Shutter Island Synopsis: It’s 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Shutter Island’s Ashecliffe Hospital. He’d been gunning for an assignment on the island for reasons of his own—but before long he wonders whether he hasn’t been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister.
Teddy’s code-breaking skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals “escape” in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues proliferate, »

Back in May of this year we reported on the fact that Martin Scorsese was going to be taking on the legendary figure of Frank Sinatra in a biopic about the singer, simply titled Sinatra. Along with that news came word that a couple of actors were lined up to play the titular man, in the form of Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Depp was reportedly the studio’s first choice for the role, while DiCaprio’s name was being thrown around as a possibility more than anything, particularly because he’s lead many of Scorsese’s movies over the past few years (The Aviator, The Departed, Gangs of New York).
However, we get news today - thanks to The Guardian (via Cinemablend) that DiCaprio may be more in the running to play Sinatra than we first thought, along with the already-mentioned Depp (who I guess is seriously being looked »

Variety is reporting that Matt Damon and Josh Brolin are in talks to join the previously announced Jeff Bridges in the Coen Bros.’ remake of the John Wayne classic, True Grit. On top of directing, the Coens have also written the script (as they do with virtually all their films) which is said to be more faithful to the original Charles Portis novel than the 1969 film.
Bridges was previously announced as being in talks to play U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn (played originally by Wayne) and that appears to still be the case. If cast, Damon would play the lawman (called La Boeuf in the original, played by Glen Campbell) who teams up with Cogburn, while Brolin would play the man who kills a 14-year old girl’s father. The girl has yet to be cast.
Adding to writing and directing duties, the Coens will also produce True Grit alongside Steven Spielberg and Scott Rudin. »

Joel and Ethan Coen are currently at work prepping to shoot their own take on the Charles Portis novel that became the adventure western True Grit, and Matt Damon and Josh Brolin are currently in talks to join the cast.
The original won John Wayne an Oscar for his turn as the stubborn, drunken, eye patched Us Marshall Rooster Cogburn. Jeff Bridges is already attached to play the role of Wayne's character , it will be the first time the actor has worked with the brothers since he justly abided as the Dude in The Big Lebowski.
Damon is lined up for the role of La Boeuf, a Texas Ranger who partners with Cogburn and the recently orphaned Mattie Ross as they track through dangerous native territory in search of justice for the murderer of the girl's father. This would mark the first time that Damon and the Coen brothers have worked together. »

Editor's note: This week we're welcoming Mike Wong on board to write our weekly movie column.
Another week, another set of movies. Hard to believe it’s already nearly November when the Oscar-bait starts being dangled, and unless you didn’t see any movies last week, I’m sorry to say it’s a good week to stay home or do something not movie related.
The first of the wide releases this week is Amelia starring the swanky Hilary Swank in a movie that almost no one was waiting for. This biopic about Amelia Earhart, the first female pilot to cross the Atlantic, seems to have flown out of the Hollywood machine with every cliché and formulaic fixture intact. Currently scoring a 22% on Rottentomatoes.com, I’ll wager that it’ll probably experience some serious turbulence in the box office.
