Not since "Hearts and Minds" has a documentary dealt so effectively with the Vietnam War. In this case, obviously, the main focus is on John Kerry's tour of duty there, and how it led him to join Vietnam Veterans Against the War. The interviews with his family members, wartime compatriots, and fellow protesters, really give you a feel for the era, and how it relates to the Iraq War.If absolutely nothing else, "Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry" has infinitely more credibility than Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, or "Stolen Honor" (that pseudo-documentary that Sinclair Broadcasting tried to air). Of course, more than anything, this documentary not only highlights the wanton brutality of the Vietnam War, but also brings to mind the fact that George W. Bush never served in Vietnam, and thus has no moral authority to conduct the Iraq War in the manner that he has.Truly a masterpiece of a documentary, comparable to "Fahrenheit 9/11".
