- When the shot pans over Sarah's books, they include John Updike's "Couples" also about married couples in adulterous affairs in the suburbs.
- The character of Bullhorn Bob (played by Raymond J. Barry) is not in Tom Perrotta's novel.
- During the football match when the Guardians defeat the hotshots from the Financial District, a montage with narration closely resembles NFL Films productions of similar stories. Specifically the shot where the football is spiraling towards the receiver in slow motion.
- Brad's name was Todd in the book, but changed to avoid confusion while filming with Todd Field.
