I recently saw this remarkable documentary at Cinequest, where it should have won top honors. It follows a high school football team through a year of its season - a team that hasn't lost a game in something like 13 years. It runs like Euripides' Hecuba, with youthful pursuit (and its sacrifice) standing in for Polyxena; football as allegory for the shade of Achilles. For those of you who have read my reviews before, you know I rarely award a film "5 hammers" but I see no other choice in this case. It is both a compelling account of athletic triumph without common aesthetization of form at the expense of subject, and of passion without bearing the stigmata of traditional Hollywood gloss. The film could bear to be more critical of its subject, but by no means panders to it. It is the sort of distended objectivity with the underpinning of extreme deliberation that I have not seen since Wimm Wenders.-TWA
