The gossip: "the hottest show on television." The truth: typical show that makes teenagers look like idiots.
CW's "hit" series Gossip Girl boast that catchy and rather intriguing slogan "you're nobody until your talked about," but I am afraid the interest ends there. Although it is nice to hear Kristen Bell's voice when you turn on the television to hear talk about the latest gossip of the in and outs of Long Island's rich and fabulous, the characters themselves aren't so fabulous.
Synopsis: Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) has just returned to her hometown of the upper east side Manhattan and immediately upon her arrival she is not welcomed back by her former friends who turn on her. This includes best frenemy Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), the most popular and beautiful girl in NYC (Meester is NOT attractive). A war between the two girls continues to ignite as Blair must fight for boyfriend Nate Archilbald (Chance Crawford)'s attention who has been in love with Serena since their one night tryst a year ago. However Serena seems more interested in Brooklyn boy Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), whose little sister Jenny (Taylor Momsen) wants more than anything to be a part of Blair and her crew. However she doesn't realize that she needs to watch out for jerks like Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick). Meanwhile Serena's mother Lily (Kelly Rutherford) and Dan and Jenny's father Rufus (Matthew Settle) have unresolved feelings for one another ever since they dated as teenagers. What follows is a series of love triangles, backstabbing, lying, cheating, etc. (you have seen all this before). The biggest disappointment with this show is the fact that is created by Josh Schwartz, creator of THE O.C. and his partner Stephanie Savage, who also worked on THE O.C. This show combined with NBC's CHUCK combine for two of the worst hours on television every week. Both of his shows compete against each other in the same time slot (odd ) Monday 8/9c one NBC and one on THE CW. Nevertheless it just proves that Schwartz cannot write anymore good television and THE O.C. is quite possibly his one and only big hit. When THE O.C. debuted critics and audiences went wild and the series exploded into a pop culture phenomena. He had a great idea and created a masterful world. However he has no idea what to do after that. Once he has squeezed his brain dry, he turns to recycled plots from other shows and uses them to keep it going just long enough. His career is dead. After THE O.C. premiered everyone adored him, now everyone could care less he even exist. GG is incredibly predictable. Everything happens just like you think it would and there are NO surprises. Serena hooks up with Dan, but then gets with Nate, who kisses Jenny cause he thinks its Serena, who almost gets raped by Chuck, who then dates Blair, who complains the entire time about her life and jumps at any chance to betray her best friend, who continues to take it, who gets jealous when Dan is torn between her and ex girlfriend Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szhor), who later dates Nate, then moves on Chuck, who is still in love with Blair. Blah, blah, blah. It's always the same! They have no idea how to bring in new characters or keep the show fresh because they have no idea what the hell they are doing. Pretty soon everyone will have slept with everyone, and everyone will be involved with a major crisis monthly. This is worse than a daytime soap. Nate has slept with every single girl on the show. Chuck has slept with one of them, attempted with two, and is probably going to sleep with the other one now too. And Dan has slept with two. Serena slept with two, almost with the other. Jenny with one. Vanessa with two and now moving on to the other. And Blair with two. It's a ridiculous web that just never stops. But sometime ridiculous webs can be pretty intense, fun, and really a total blast. This show is not one of those cases. Every relationship feels fake and contrived. FORCED. There is no real emotion and everyone acts like they are just doing this because they are paid to. The acting is AWFUL! Although Lively is pretty decent, Meester cannot act to save her life. Crawford just plain sucks. Badgley is OK, not good, not decent just mediocre. Wetwick is actually pretty good and I would have to say he is the best actor on the show, he is no James Dean, nor would you expect him to be. Szhor comes in third in my opinion behind Westwick and Lively. She's actually pretty talented. However nobody gets as bad as .MOMSEN! OMG! WOW! NEVER HAVE I SEEN SOMEONE SOOOOOOO WOODEN! Holy crap, is she for real? She is 100% incompetent! I couldn't believe how bad she was. No emotion. She acts like she is so bored and just wants to go home. BAD! BAD! BAD! Rutherford, Settle, and the other adults are awful. The cinematography is really horrible. NYC is a beautiful city but they make it look like a garbage dump. THE CW spends ten cents on their camera work and it shows. MAJORLY! When a show has a horrible white-ish tint to it, you know it's cheaply made. That shows they don't care about it. So why should I? Bottom Line: It's just another generic television show that will complete its run and be forgotten. Yes it isn't as bad as 90210(that show has NO redeeming qualities). For one they don't have Kristen Bell as their narrator. However GG is far from anything that deserves respect. Nothing will ever top THE O.C., with colorful and OUTRAGEOUSLY (seriously!) beautiful people, beautiful cinematography, hilarious one liners and dialogue, and original plot twists. GG is mediocre and will never get the attention Schwartz is looking for. Neither will Chuck.
