A charming and tongue in cheek episode of "Faerie Tale Theatre", 13 November 2007
Author: eowyn_belle from United States

This 1984 episode of Shelley Duvall's pet series "Faerie Tale Theatre" is a charming and tongue-in-cheek adaptation of the Grimm Brothers' tale. Vanessa Redgrave is a hoot as the vainglorious Evil Queen: she's a bubbling pot of melodrama, vanity, and madness, and I loved every scene she was in. I really think the classically trained Redgrave had a blast being this hammy and uninhibited. Vincent Price is also a scene stealer as the devious Magic Mirror. Elizabeth McGovern isn't given much to do as Snow White, but she is very pretty, so she has that in her favor, and the seven dwarfs are a funny bunch. One of them is played by Tony Cox, who would later make a name for himself in less than family friendly movies such as "Bad Santa" and "Epic Movie". I also enjoyed soap opera star Rex Smith as a refreshingly goofy, ukulele strumming Prince Charming, who sings of finding his true love. Another delight is how humorous this adaptation is, and how it tweaks the familiar points of the story. For instance, one scene has the Magic Mirror tell the Queen she's the fairest, then he sees Snow White and nonchalantly says, "I've changed my mind... Snow White is the fairest". And when the mourning dwarfs are carrying Snow White in her glass coffin, one of them tearfully mentions how heavy she is. The DVD is out of print, but if you can find it anywhere, it's worth checking out. Shelley Duvall mixes the old with the new in this episode, and it works. One of the best episodes of "FTT" yet!
