It’s been a great year for the British film industry. It kicked off with the British invasion of the Oscars, with notable wins for Kate Winslet, and Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. The huge amount of British Actors plying their trade successfully in Hollywood continued to grow, with Scot Gerard Butler particularly in demand with parts in Gamer, The Ugly Truth and Law Abiding Citizen.
British filmmakers have been responsible for some of the more interesting films this year. Duncan Jone’s Moon was a brilliant yet under appreciated sci-fi drama. Fish Tank and Harry Brown lead the way for low budget drama. Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus finally found a distributor. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince became the highest grossing British movie of all time.
British film festivals Raindance and the BFI London Film Festival saw record attendances, and showcased some great films from home,

A pretty good year.

It seems to be a critical tradition to bewail the awfulness of each year's movies. But how often is this really true? With the annual caveat that it's impossible (and meaningless) to designate one movie or filmmaker as the "best," here are a number of 2009 pictures I liked a lot in various aspects, with one entrant in each category selected, fairly arbitrarily, as the "best," and equally worthy contenders noted below them.
Best Picture:
"Up in the Air" A mainstream film with a complex heart and a brain, too. Not exactly a comedy, not precisely a drama, but as close to a perfect movie as any other this year.
Also really good: "The Hurt Locker": Can it actually have been seven years since Kathryn Bigelow's last picture? This scrappy low-budget film, with a breakthrough performance by Jeremy Renner,

The Lost Generation: A Decade of Teen Movies

The best teen movies reflect modern youth culture and alter it—they transform the vernacular, fashion, and the trajectory of the genre itself. They are original and smart (even mid-dick joke). Some are raunchy comedies, some are stark dramas, some defy classification, but all are unflinchingly honest (even mid-dick joke). Though they very seldom win awards, the best teen movies usually compel repeat viewings and somehow seem to intuit the needs and tastes of generations to come. Here are 15 of the decade’s most memorable explorations of all the intrinsic charms and traumas of teendom.
Most likely to influence future filmmakers: Brick (2005)
Writer-director Rian Johnson overhauled the teen genre, the noir, and blew everyone’s mind by setting this brilliant whodunit in a high school. The dialogue is tight and heavily stylized, borrowing from 1940s hardboiled slang, and the engrossing detective plot is fueled by all of the mean and dirty social politics of high school.

The Missing Person: Michael Shannon

It is not a stretch to say that every movie could use the exceptional and eccentric presence of Michael Shannon, a reliably hypnotic actor (Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Bug, Shotgun Stories) who's probably best known for his Oscar-nominated performance in last year's Revolutionary Road.
Happily, Noah Buschel's smart little neo-noir The Missing Person, which premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, is anchored by the lurching, physically imposing presence of Shannon as alcoholic detective John Rosow. A man out of time in a natty suit, Chicago vowels yowling all over the place, Rosow is sent to a yellowed-out California (evoking Elliott Gould in The Long Goodbye) in search of a missing person, a man who disappeared after the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.
While Buschel's film has an air of neo-noir cool that fits comfortably alongside Rian Johnson's Brick and HBO's Bored to Death, it's an

Another new teaser poster for All About Evil has hit the Net, and this one is screaming for a toothbrush, dental floss, and some Listerine. Maybe even gas, rags, and a match.
The new poster features the character "Adrian", the ummm ... foul-mouthed usher played by Noah Segan.
All About Evil is a wicked black comedy set in the world of a horror movie about a mousy librarian (Natasha Lyonne) who inherits her father's beloved but failing old movie house. In order to save the family business, she discovers her inner serial killer - and a legion of rabid gore fans - when she starts turning out a series of grisly shorts. What her fans don't realize yet is that the murders in the movies are all too real!
The film costars Thomas Dekker (Sarah Connor Chronicles, A Nightmare On Elm Street), Cassandra Peterson (Elvira), Mink Stole (Pink Flamingos, Serial Mom), Noah Segan (Deadgirl,

Uncertainty features Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lynn Collins as a couple who, at a critical point in their relationship, accidentally come to possess a cell phone that puts them in some serious danger. Gordon-Levitt is the star of such awesome films as The Lookout and Brick, as well as our own James Wallace’s most personal and body oil-heavy dreams (bring up Joseph Gordon-Levitt to him and you will not doubt it). Collins played Silverfox, Wolverine’s love interest in X-men Origins: Wolverine, and has also probably been in a few body oil dreams.

Gordon-Levitt the one guarantee about stumbling 'Uncertainty'
After playing the romantic lead in the sweet love story "500 Days of Summer" as well as a villainous role in the action blockbuster "GI Joe," Joseph Gordon-Levitt returns to the world of indie cinema with "Uncertainty," a dual drama experiment from San Francisco-based filmmakers David Siegel and Scott McGehee. It's a welcome move, as Gordon-Levitt's best dramatic work remains the specialty dramas "Brick" and "Mysterious Skin." "Uncertainty" offers the 28-year-old actor a chance to play the same character in two different stories and his believable performances are the main reasons to watch the interesting but stumbling film.
Bobby (Gordon-Levitt) and Cate (Lynn Collins) make up a young NY couple experiencing an encyclopedic range of emotions via two radically different dramas that unfold on July 4. In Manhattan, their adventure revolves around a found mobile phone and the dangerous people who will kill to get it back.

Whether as a fast-talking high schooler in a film noir (Brick) or a disfigured soldier in a big budget blockbuster (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), Joseph Gordon-Levitt has proven himself to be one of the most talented young actors. His new movie, Uncertainty, takes the viewer on a journey into two different worlds, where a flip of a coin takes a young couple (Gordon-Levitt and Lynn Collins) into an innocuous visit to her family and decisions about their future and another takes them into a strange criminal underworld where everyone is after a cell phone they found in a cab. Directed by David Siegel and Scott McGehee, Uncertainty was filmed on the fly with hand-held cameras in S16m and HD as the couple race towards their different futures. In this interview, we discuss the freedom of improvising within a structured world, his favorite movies, and what he can't say about G.

Can the media alter the public's perception of an actor? I believe so - that's why we have the likes of Megan Fox hugging the headlines and getting the covers of men's magazines, while a lot of more talented young actresses could not even manage to get featured and have interviews. If you think about it, what has she done in the movies to deserve so much publicity and attention?
- - -
- - -
Some may argue, 'hey, don't blame her, she's just good at playing the Hollywood game, and she got a shrewd agent managing her career!'. That maybe so and yes, I agree when others say 'she'll not last another year - others will soon take over'. There are those who may say 'Agents and talent managers always take care of their wards - that's why stars have a public image and a private one'.

Secret Identity: Five Actors Who Could Play Magneto In 'X-Men Origins: Magneto'

Given recent comments from Sir Ian McKellen about his involvement (or lack thereof) in the upcoming "X-Men Origins: Magneto" film from Fox, it's time to face the inevitable—Magneto is going to be recast. This was already a virtual certainty due to the story's purported focus on the Master of Magnetism's more youthful days, but McKellen's words confirm the need for a new, younger actor.
Recasting Magneto is difficult for a number of reasons. For one, McKellen already played him so expertly that an actor of his quality is absolutely essential—and not only that, but it'd be a good idea to find someone who looks like they could age into McKellen's likeness, which is very tricky. For that reason, I think it's more important to focus on finding an excellent, fitting actor for the role, rather than selecting an actor based on his likeness to McKellen.
When and if "X-Men Origins: Magneto" gets underway,

Let me open by saying, outright, that Rian Johnson's debut film-noir/high school crossover, Brick, absolutely floored me. I saw, in that film, a true homage built on and aimed at, a love for a genre that was somehow beyond affection. A great movie and a story that portrayed a specialised and well crafted knack for dialogue and plot that even Tarantino couldn't muster.
It had a small powerful heart. There was no pretension or slyness that tied itself to the film (yes there was a style and a theme which enhanced it for effect...) but it seamed to have a pulse and a life of its own without immediately prodding you, self consciously, to do nothing but remember other films. Despite the numerous allusions to Dasheil Hammet's writing and film noir as a whole it stood up on its own two legs. It lived inside an overly revisited

If you're going to ask me which movie of Leonardo DiCaprio I remember the most, I'd say - 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape', and I'll have to add that even though Johnny Depp headlines the flick, both him and Leo stood out with their heartfelt performances- with DiCaprio earning an Oscar nom for his role. While I am inclined to say that Leo's role appears to be the more challenging, the acclaim he received stems from the fact that he really put himself into Arnie and he became that character.
