Film & Disc Review, Dreamland by Rusty White of the website: EntertainmentInsiders.com reviewed: 2007-03-10
Veteran sound editor James Lay's feature film debut "Dreamland" is a smart and scary blend of science-fiction, quantum physics and horror. Lay makes the best of a low budget, smart script and talented cast.
Dylan (Shane Elliot) and Meghan (Jackie Kreisler) are traveling to visit her parents in Reno. Meghan is haunted by vague nightmares. In the first 10 minutes of the movie she wakes up with a start a number of times. After a long day driving, the pair stops for dinner at a diner near Area 51. Blake the bartender (Jonathan Breck, the Creeper in Jeepers Creepers) is a huge UFO buff and the diner is designed to cash in on the mysteries surrounding Area 51. After a quick but unusual stay at the diner, the couple head off into the night.
The night where things go bump in. Dylan and Meghan know things are about to turn weird when their radio picks up a newscast about the speech Adolph Hitler gave yesterday!
To tell more about the plot would do you a disservice. A greater disservice than is given this cool movie by the lame treatment it is given on this vanilla DVD.
Director Lay builds up suspense and delivers a number of good scares. The dialogue is good. Special effects are also quite good, especially considering the low budget. The film's two leads have good on screen chemistry. Jackie Kreisler has the makings of a future scream queen. Ms. Kreisler reminded me of Marilyn Burns during her ordeal in the desert night.
The Disc: Creepy, scary movie. Fair picture. Good sound. Not one extra!
Picture Quality: 7/10 The daylight scenes are a bit washed out. A blue hue dominates the entire film. This may have been on purpose. The night scenes are much better.
Sound Quality: 9/10 No loss of dialogue. Excellent mix of dialogue, sound effects and music.
Easter Eggs: No Easter Eggs Found on Disc.
Extra Features: 0/10 Image Entertainment has released this DVD without any extras. While that is not unusual, the fact that they are charging $25.00 for a vanilla DVD is unusual. Back in the day when all there was were VHS tapes, manufacturers priced some for sale and others for Rental. Meaning the sales price was so high that not too many people would spent the money to own one. I guess this DVD is priced to rent. I'm sorry that there were no extras because the movie is well made for a low budget indie. I'd like to know how the movie was made.
The Final Word:
A bit high priced considering the lack of extras. Well worth the price of a rental. Fans may want to purchase later. Rusty White
