Brief Interviews with Hideous Men Review

4 hours ago | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

John Krasinski’s Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is a narrowing of David Foster Wallace’s complex fiction, a varying arrangement of readings and reenactments, some more affecting than others.

The collection of short stories is chopped into short scenes of narcissists intensely delivering soliloquies of Wallace’s words, ranging from pitiful to playful to poignant.  A tape recorder runs for Sara (Julianne Nicholson), a grad student struggling to focus her thesis as Krasinski wrangles his own.

The subjects (including Timothy Hutton, Will Arnett, Will Forte, and Dominic Cooper) bare their psychological proclivities, magnifying or minimizing their inherent machismo for honest and occasionally humorous monologues.  Deplorable tales (or in some cases, fantasies) of sexual encounters are recounted with bravado, shame, and regret, but always with a certain vulnerability unseen in casual or social interaction.  Others wax philosophical on depression or their families, exposing a raw reality beneath the surface that »

Ricky Gervais Lends His Pen to Phoneshop

13 November 2009 2:57 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Ricky Gervais is working his ass off lately. The Invention of Lying just ended its theatrical run, and he’s got another film, Cemetery Junction, coming next year. Now he’s entering the mobile phone market with PhoneShop. Gervais is editing the script for the series, which will air in the U.K. on Channel 4. Phil Bowker created, produced, and wrote the series. Bowker, who gave Gervais his first job on TV a decade ago, has produced several TV shows, but this will be his first run at writing and directing.  Little is known about PhoneShop, but it will take place at a cell phone store in a mall. The story (I’m guessing first episode) revolves around Christopher (Tom Bennett) who has to sell a cell phone by closing time to get a job at the store.  More on the series after the jump.

Date Night | Trailer

13 November 2009 8:20 AM, PST | SmellsLikeScreenSpirit | See recent SmellsLikeScreenSpirit news »

The first trailer for Date Night, which teams NBC Thursday Night Comedy heavy weights Steve Carell (The Office) & Tina Fey (30 Rock) is now online thanks to Apple Trailers. Though the film is a comedy, per the trailer it looks like it will be just as much an action movie. Supporting the stars are Mark Wahlberg as a buffed up security expert who is an ex-client of Fey’s character, and James Franco and Mila Kunis who play the shady couple who are the real targets in the mistaken identity. Also in the Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, The Pink Panther 2006) directed film are Ray Liotta, Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Wiig, Common, Taraji P. Henson, William Fichtner, Leighton Meester, Jimmi Simpson, Olivia Munn, and Michelle Galdenzi. Claire (Tina Fey) and Phil Foster (Steve Carell) are a suburban couple slogging through their daily lives and marriage. Even their "date nights" of dinner »

First ‘Date Night Trailer Released

13 November 2009 4:10 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Those looking to get a glimpse at next year’s NBC Thursday primetime lineup-inspired hybrid film are in luck as 20th Century Fox has release the first trailer for the upcoming Steve Carell and Tina Fey romantic, action, comedy film Date Night.

This marks the first film by director Shawn Levy since his box office hits Night at the Museum and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian raked in over $1 Billion. Not only does Levy have a new film, but also a script written by the talented Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Ocean’s Thirteen) with revisions by Josh Klausner (Shrek The Third), Simon Kinberg (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) and Aline Bros McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada). (You may remember the names Simon Kinberg and Aline Brosh McKenna as they are the writing team to sell a $2 million film pitch to Paramount with J.J. Abrams.)

Review: The Office - Murder

12 November 2009 9:23 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

(S06E10) This week we had a bit of a head-scratcher. I want to like this episode because of how it pushed the corporate end of the story along, and I want to like it because it showed Michael in a bit of a different light than we expected, especially at the end. There were also a couple of laugh-out-loud moments (especially one involving Creed... but, then again, Creed is guaranteed laughs).

But overall, the episode felt tentative. The writers set up the murder mystery part of the episode to offset some of the bad news at Dm, but didn't seem to go far enough.

'The Office' Recap: Voodoo Mama Juju's and Doing it for the Kids

12 November 2009 3:45 PM, PST | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

Angela (Angela Kinsey) is a voodoo mama juju.

That's probably all you need to hear to figure out that "Murder" is a crazy, crazy episode of The Office, one of the best since "Niagara" that featured Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam's (Jenna Fischer) wedding. It had several laugh out loud moments, which turned out to be a severe understatement to the crisis that has befallen Dunder Mifflin.

Is 'Date Night' the Must-See Comedy of 2010?

12 November 2009 2:25 PM, PST | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Those fans of Must-See TV will be pretty stoked to learn that Steve Carell (star of The Office) is starring opposite Tina Fey (of 30 Rock fame) in an upcoming comedy called Date Night. In the film, Carell and Fey play a boring married couple who decide to go out for dinner at a fancy restaurant where, in order to get a table, they pretend to be someone else – someone who didn't care to show up for their reservation. Unfortunately for our boring married couple, though, that "someone else" has a huge target on their back – and before you know it, Carell and Fey are running from bad guys and running into a number of familiar faces like Mila Kunis, Leighton Meester, Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Wiig, and Ray Liotta. Directed by Shawn Levy (Night...

Interview: John Krasinski

12 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

John Krasinski (Away We Go, The Office) will be in Austin this weekend to premiere his directorial debut of Brief Interviews with Hideous Men as part of the Celebrity Guests Signature Series at the Alamo Downtown. I spoke with John by phone before his arrival in Austin, and here's what he had to say.

Tell us about your film Brief Interviews with Hideous Men.

It's a book by David Foster Wallace that I had read in college. Without being overly sentimental, it's basically not only been my passion to get it made into a movie, but it was also the thing that made me want to be an actor. I had been acting in college just for fun with friends, and after being a part of this staged reading that we did, it made such an impact on me emotionally. In one of those big ways it had a huge »

First Trailer for Steve Carell and Tina Fey in ‘Date Night’

12 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Fans of comedy and episodic TV have nothing but good thoughts come to mind when they hear the names Steve Carell and Tina Fey. Both The Office and 30 Rock have dominated comedy on network TV for quite some time now, so it would only make sense that a film showcasing both of them together would be epic, no? Probably not, after seeing the trailer for their newest film, Date Night.

The film is about a bored and boring married couple who decide to spice things up by lying to a hostess at a restaurant about their reservations, thus taking another couple’s name and table. One crazy happenstance after another then occurs, and our beloved couple is now on the run from gangsters. Add to that premise the reluctant hero from Get Smart and the neurotic lead from Baby Mama and you’ve got this 90-minute comedy.

An Uncanny Similarity Between Mad Men and The Office

12 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

When the season finale of Mad Men was over, there was a minor tinge of déjà vu that I couldn't immediately pin down. Hours later, it occurred to me that one of the major twists in the finale shared several fun similarities to The Office (Scranton Branch). In fact, up until the epiphany, I had never considered Don Draper to be every bit the serious, hip and fair boss that Michael Scott is delighted to find in the mirror each morning when he combs back his hair. As is /Film's reader friendly policy, spoilers ahead... In the fifth season of The Office, Michael Scott (Steve Carell) finds himself in the exceedingly disagreeable predicament of losing control and independence as a boss in face of alien corporate pressure and supervision. Dunder-Mifflin has sent a Regional Vice President (Idris Elba) to get him in line. The culture clash leads to him ultimately »

Veteran's Day, 'Precious' And 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' In Today's Twitter-Wood

11 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Veteran's Day brought no shortage of veteran appreciation today in Twitter-Wood, prompting thanks and memories from across the board, as well as a personal note from "Twilight" actor Gil Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Jason Schwartzman's on his way to the NYC debut of "Fantastic Mr. Fox," which as a Wes Anderson follower, I am anxious to see myself this weekend. Another new release, "Precious," really got a hold of Tyrese Gibson, who said the film's been keeping him awake. Check out their thoughts along with pictures from Peter Facinelli and John Stamos and a Henry Winkler autograph to be jealous of after the jump. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 11, 2009.

The Office: Preview of Episode 6.10 "Murder"

11 November 2009 2:05 PM, PST | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

The hits just don't stop for Michael (Steve Carell) on The Office. After a harsh realization last week (and the consequent breakup with Helene, Pam's mom), he now has to deal with "troubling rumors" about Dunder Mifflin. He forces the office into a day of strange diversions, which upset (John Krasinski) and leading others to wonder if Michael has gone insane.

Has Michael gone insane? After all, it was a wild ride after Pam's (Jenna Fischer) wedding when he met Helene, fell in love with her, started going out, then just as they were celebrating her birthday last week, started to realize that, well, she was very old. You can practically hear the cogs turning in Michael's head. Apparently, he wanted to do a lot of things before he dies, and dating an older woman doesn't exactly go well with that.

Simon Cowell named highest paid man on US prime-time television

American Idol and America's Got Talent help put Cowell to $75m and put him ahead of Donald Trump

Simon Cowell has been named the highest paid man on primetime television in the Us, with estimated earnings of $75m (£45m) last year.

Cowell collected the haul for his work as a judge on the talent show American Idol and as the creator of America's Got Talent.

The business magazine Forbes put the Brit ahead of Donald Trump, the host of the Us version of The Apprentice, who made an estimated $50m in the year to 1 June. The American Idol host, Ryan Seacrest, came third, with $38m.

Hugh Laurie, who has become a star in the Us for his portrayal of a curmudgeonly physician in Fox drama House, was the only other British member of Forbes' list of the top 10 male earners on prime-time Us TV.

You can buy a lot of chest-hair-baring T-shirts with $75 million. Forbes magazine estimates that "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell pulls down that much loot every year, making him the top-earning man in prime time in the U.S.

That haul easily put him ahead of the #2 gentleman on the list, "The Apprentice" host Donald Trump ($50 million), not to mention Cowell's frequent verbal sparring partner, the second-hardest-working-man-in-show- business, "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, who rounds out the top three at $38 million. The calculations are based on estimated pre-tax earnings from June 1, 2008 to June 1, 2009.
