Film School 101: Protagonists

1 November 2009 4:57 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

First off I need to apologize for the tardiness of this entry.  I was infected with the swine pandemic and was unable to do anything but utter “Bbbbraaaiiinsssss…” feebly from my bed.  Now I’m up and about again, so here we go.

One of the first things to do when making your movie is figure out who your main character is going to be.  Now, you may pick your plot first and then figure what kind of protagonist you want or you may pick your characters and write about what they do – it all depends on your style of writing.  In either case, understanding your protagonist(s) is very important since these are the people whom the plot revolves around, who we will come to know and love and who we will follow for the next 120 minutes.  They will be our tour guides through your movie so you have »

'Top Chef' Frontrunner Falls

28 October 2009 4:34 PM, PDT | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

Things are finally shaking up on this season of Top Chef, when North Jersey native Michael Isabella, previously touted to reach at least the final four, was eliminated last night partly because his dish lacked an important ingredient and partly because he was arrogant.

Isabella, 34, was given the walking papers on the Natalie Portman episode of Top Chef with the Closer and Star Wars star, who turned out to be a vegetarian. He landed in the bottom of the elimination challenge where they had to cook vegetarian dishes for Portman and her friends at Tom's Craftsteak restaurant at MGM Grand.

Top Chef: Preview of Episode 6.10 "Meat Natalie"

27 October 2009 3:42 PM, PDT | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

Tonight on Top Chef, Natalie Portman! Yes, the Star Wars and Closer star will drop by the Bravo cooking show as guest client during the episode's elimination challenge, along with friends at Craftsteak, Tom Colicchio's Las Vegas restaurant. Meanwhile, for the quickfire challenge, TV Guide's editors drop by to complicate things with their list of shows to use as inspiration for TV dinners.

Last week's Top Chef brought back the famed restaurant wars (not the Facebook variety, Ok no that's Restaurant City and Mafia Wars, my bad). But prior to that was the very exciting quickfire, where teams of four had to cook one dish, with one person doing it step by step without any idea what's going on, or what the first person envisioned.

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #14

25 October 2009 3:17 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I saw quite a bit this week, but some of it I have already detailed such as my reviews for Trucker and Tormented. I also watched the Blu-ray for Love, Actually (a personal favorite and a review is forth-coming) as well as the following three films.

The second two (The Sniper and 5 Against the House) are both from the November 3 release from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Film Noir Collection Volume One. You can get more details on the complete set right here and I hope to discuss the other three films (The Big Heat, The Lineup and Murder by Contract) next Sunday or perhaps in a complete review.

As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 50 friends on the movie rental site and would love to have a few more if those of you out there with accounts are interested. Now, »

David Schwimmer Gets Dark with Clive Owen and Catherine Keener

15 October 2009 1:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Who would ever thought that David Schwimmer would helm some drama? Between acting gigs like Friends, helming 10 episodes of the hit show, directing Run Fatboy Run, and even picking up 6 episodes of Little Britain USA, he seemed to be completely focused on comedy. Yet now Variety reports that he will direct Clive Owen and Catherine Keener in a new "dark drama" called Trust.

Schwimmer created the story, which Andy Bellin wrote, and it focuses on the effects an online sexual predator has on a family. But it won't be Owen going back to his creepy Closer ways. Owen and Keener will play the parents of a 14-year-old girl who fell victim to an adult posing as a teenager in a chat room. The young Liana Liberato will play the daughter. There's no word on who the predator will be, but consider the lack of sex pronouns, I've got to wonder if it's a woman, »

Clive Owen Says Daughters Fear His Disappearing Act

11 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | People - CelebrityBabies | See recent People - CelebrityBabies news »

Jon Furniss/WireImage

Taking time off between acting roles has become increasingly important to Clive Owen as his daughters Hannah, 12, and Eve, 10, have gotten older. Noting that his time on set is often “for very solid points of time,” the 47-year-old Closer star is cognizant of how his absence is being interpreted by the girls.

“No matter how much time I spend at home, there’s always this thing underneath: that there’s a possibility I might disappear again and do a movie. Whereas most fathers, even if they’re not around that much, there’s a regular routine.”

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #11

This week, after reading over Laremy's list of Top Ten Coen Bros. Films I figured it was about time to watch the four remaining films of theirs I had not yet seen. On top of that I continued my viewing of the new 13 film Paul Newman DVD Collection with a film I loved that ultimately ended up inspiring me to watch another 1958 Newman film. It was a relatively slow week for me, but there's enough to make for a conversation.

As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 50 friends on the movie rental site and would love to have a few more if those of you out there with accounts are interested. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies...

The softer side of Clive Owen: Can you dig it?

26 September 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Ever since I saw Croupier while visiting London with my folks years ago, Clive Owen has been one of my very favorite actors. No one does that British brooding thing quite like he does (see: Gosford Park, CloserInside Man), and when he's bad-ass (i.e. King Arthur, Children of Men, Shoot 'Em Up), he's thrilling. But in his latest movie The Boys Are Back (directed by Shine's Scott Hicks), Owen sheds that stoic persona to play Joe Warr, a father of two sons who, following the death of his second wife, is faced with raising both of them on his own. »

Clive Owen Gets Back

By

Alex Simon

Clive Owen is one of those actors that keep surprising you. Just when you think the audience, and the Hollywood establishment, has pegged him as an action hero, a leading man, or a romantic comedy pin-up, Owen pulls an about-face and does something unexpected.

It all started October 3, 1964 in Coventry, England. Owen’s father, a country music singer, abandoned the family when he was just three. His mother later remarried, with Clive and his four brothers raised by his mother and stepfather, who worked for British Rail. Owen has characterized those early years as "rough." A self-described “solidly working class” kid, Owen was bitten by the acting bug at age 13 and followed his dream to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art several years later. Initially cutting his teeth on high-profile British television programs such as “Chancer” and “Sharman,” as well as art house »

Oscar Contenders Housekeeping: Prediction Clean-Up

Can you feel it? It's officially underway. The Toronto International Film Festival has come to a close and the horses are in their stalls and the gun has gone off. The awards race is in full swing and while there are several films yet to be seen, there are a few early front-runners to keep our eyes on. Now, not a lot has happened since my last update that I haven't mentioned in periodic articles since then, but I still needed to update my predictions as a result. Sony Pictures Classics has made an impact with their purchase of Get Low and the Weinstein Co. picked up A Single Man. Both pick-ups instantly add new contenders to the likes of Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress and Best Actor. On top of that, Lee Daniels' Precious did wonderful at the Toronto Film Festival taking home the top prize and several »

Exclusive Video: Clive Owen Discusses The Boys Are Back

23 September 2009 8:22 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Clive Owen has become an international movie star by choosing interesting characters to play in compelling films like Closer and Children of Men. He posses the rare ability to make even the most complicated character relatable to any audience. We had the opportunity to speak exclusively with Clive Owen about his moving new film, opening in theatres on September 25th. To watch our video interview, click on the clip below:

Owen Chooses Burial Spot

19 September 2009 7:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Clive Owen knows where he wants to be buried when he dies - and is considering paying a hefty sum for the privilege already.

The 44-year-old Closer actor wants his final resting place to be at the Highgate Cemetery in north London, near his current home.

He has already received a quote for $18,000 to $22,500 (£12,000 to £15,000) for the burial spot, in the same graveyard where Karl Marx rests.

And Owen is so fascinated with the cemetery, he wants his two daughters to take a trip there to see what it's like.

He says, "(It's) not too expensive. I wouldn't mind being buried there. I've got to take the girls there." »

Tiff Report: Clive Owen in The Boys Are Back

15 September 2009 6:11 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

In The Boys are Back, tough guy actor Clive Owen gives a very different performance - which might be the best of his career. Best known for his Bogart-esque work in Sin City or his rage filled alpha male in Closer, Owen leaves that behind for his work here as a recently widowed father struggling with his own grief - trying to deal with his own devastating loss and the impact it is having on his young son.

As Joe, Owen goes places as an actor he has never gone before, sinking deep under the skin of this character to create a full bodied, real person that we might encounter in our lives. Heck, it could be a reflection of us one day. Every husband fears the day their wife dies, even if we do not admit it out loud, but when it happens to Joe he can barely deal »

Tiff Review: The Boys Are Back

13 September 2009 11:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

After the last few years, we've grown quite accustomed to Clive Owen as the headlining, slick star, whether that be chowing down carrots and shooting people up, living black and white and dangerous as Dwight, or dealing with a world that no longer has children. What's easy to forget in all of his fame, however, is that the man has more than an irresistible delivery and on-screen charm. He's an actor with subtlety, one whose very presence can change. In films like Closer, that meant a fresh layer of smarminess and sleaze. In The Boys Are Back, it means showing the familial heart underneath the macho exterior.

Based on Simon Carr's novel, Owen stars as Joe Warr - a sports reporter in Australia who is the classic father figure, the loving but slightly absent provider. But when his wife suddenly falls ill and passes away, Joe is forced to »

Mike Nichols to Direct 'Deep Water'

17 August 2009 2:46 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Having faced Charlie Wilson's War, Mike Nichols is gearing up for his next film, and this time, there's a good dose of murder. Variety reports that he's going to direct Joe Penhall's adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel Deep Water. Set in an American suburb, the book reveals the life of a loveless marriage between Vic and Melinda -- one that survives only because Melinda is allowed to take on as many lovers as she pleases (as long as she doesn't pack up and go). However, then her lovers start to die.

Penhall, you might recall, adapted Cormac McCarthy's The Road, while Highsmith was the novelist behind Strangers on the Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley. But it's the magic of Nichols that really makes this appealing. While he's had a quite varied film career that extends from Catch-22 to dolphin assassins, Nichols has always excelled the most »
