Crashville: The Risky Route To Oscar Glory

6 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

In March 2006 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sprung one of its annual surprises by awarding the best picture Oscar to Crash, rather than Ang Lee’s acclaimed gay cowboy drama, Brokeback Mountain. At the time it looked as though racism and multiple vehicular pile-ups had trumped homosexuality in the battle of the “hot button” issue movies. But perhaps the Academy was belatedly acknowledging the kind of ambitious, densely plotted, multi-character dramas made famous by the great Robert Altman. From 1975’s Nashville, to Short Cuts, Prêt à Porter and his 2006 swansong A Prairie Home Companion, Altman allowed audiences to immerse themselves in the cinematic equivalent of a book of short stories. Writer Alissa Quart has characterised these films with multiple intersecting plotlines as “hyperlink movies”, in which, “information, character, and action co-exist without hierarchy”. Now I’m a fan of Altman and I loved Paul Thomas Anderson’s, »

What? Oscar Talks for Sandra Bullock in "The Blind Side?" Really?

5 November 2009 10:41 AM, PST | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Wow, 2009 is shaping up to be Sandra Bullock's year! And she deserves it!

First, the super-affable Bullock starred in the biggest romantic comedy of the year, "The Proposal." (Check out my fun interviews with "The Proposal" cast and crew right here)

Now, many Hollywood insiders are saying, Bullock deserves an Oscar for her performance in the upcoming "The Blind Side."

Really? We've forgiven the actress for starring in the horrible "All About Steve" already? :happy

Well, let's see. "The Blind Side" is a heartwarming true life story about Leigh Anne Tuohy (Bullock), a Southern belle who persuades her family to take in a homeless African American teen, Michael Oher (played by Quinton Aaron).

It's an against-all-odds drama that's not manipulative nor cliched.

The Los Angeles Times is saying:

"But it's Bullock, burning up the screen as an upscale Southern woman who finds her heart and soul, who should finally earn some awards attention. »

Q: What do you Really think about the circumstances surrounding Stephen Gately’s death? Do you think ill of him and his partner for being a negative representative of the gay community and its fight for marriage (in many people's eyes, threesomes aren’t "normal" when you’re married)? -- Curious from My House, USA

Stephen Gately

A: Now that’s an interesting question!

Are there times when I’m embarrassed by what other gay folks do? Well, I know that the actions of other people have no real bearing whatsoever on me – especially when you’re talking about someone who is as only tangentially related to me as merely being another member of my same minority.

Still, I also know that that’s not how a lot of people see it. »

Scientologist 'denies' Haggis remarks

A Church Of Scientology spokesperson has dismissed Paul Haggis's comments that the organisation is homophobic. Earlier this week, the Crash director tendered his resignation to the establishment after a 35-year membership. The filmmaker protested the Church's apparent opposition of Proposition 8, which bans same-sex unions in California. He also renounced the institution's official spokesman Tommy Davis for not taking action about the matter in an open letter. Davis has now stated that the correspondence was meant to be private and that neither party (more) »

Oscar Winning Screenwriter Paul Haggis Quits Scientology In Public Dispute

27 October 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Paul Haggis, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of such films as Crash, Flags of Our Fathers, and Million Dollar Baby has committed the ultimate no-no: he's split with the Church of Scientology and the story has gone viral. Scientology is considered a legitimate religion by some and a bizarre cult by others and the organization does not like or tolerate bad publicity. Just last week, Church spokesman Tommy Davis walked out on a Nightline interview rather than comment on questions pertaining to the church's top-secret beliefs that earth was founded by a race of ancient aliens. (Click here to view) In another development, senior church officials in France were convicted of committing organized fraud against members and fined $600,000. Haggis and his wife were die-hard Scientologists until Haggis saw Davis laughinghingly dismiss a church edict known as disconnecting which prohibits church members from ever talking to or associating with those that are considered enemies of Scientology. »

Jennifer Esposito Engaged to Australian Tennis Star Mark Philippoussis

27 October 2009 9:48 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Pop Eater writes that Jennifer Esposito plans to tie the knot with Mark Philippoussis, the Australian tennis star who made the finals of Wimbledon and the Us Open during his career.

An interesting choice, considering Philippoussis appeared on NBC's reality show The Age of Love two summers ago, where he selected the "right woman" (Amanda Salinas) from a baker's dozen of contestants. Also, Esposito, at 36, is four years older than Philippoussis and was previously married to Bradley Cooper. A representative told People that the two are "happily engaged and enjoying their time together."

Esposito is arguably most famous for her role in the Oscar-winning drama Crash, and she has also starred in the TV shows Samantha Who? and Rescue Me.

Scientologists scrap openly in Hollywood

27 October 2009 | Cineman.ch/en | See recent Cineman.ch/en news »

Uproar in Hollywood: Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis has resigned from the Church of Scientology and his letter to top dog Tommy Davis has been leaked on the net. It was leaked this weekend that Paul Haggis, known mainly for his screenplays ("Million Dollar Baby", "Letters from Iwo Jima" and the last two James Bond movies) as well as for directing his own films ("In the Garden of Elah" and the multiple Oscar winner "Crash"), resigned from the Church of Scientology (best known for faithful supporter Tom Cruise) this past August. In a letter to the church's spokesman, Haggis gave two reasons for leaving the sect created by L. Ron Hubbard: one is the Church of Scientology's support of Proposition 8, a piece of legislation banning gay marriage in California. "The church's refusal to denounce the action of these bigots, hypocrites and homophobes is cowardly,' Haggis wrote. His second reason was more personal: his wife, »

NBC Adds Another Urban Comedy Project To Their New Season!

27 October 2009 1:57 AM, PDT | The Humor Mill | See recent The Humor Mill news »

It looks like the NBC Network is stepping it up with more urban shows for the upcoming season as we hear that they added another new urban show to their slate.

Last week we first reported that NBC had landed actor Don Cheadle (of Crash and The Ocean 11 films) and Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder for a new urban half-hour comedy series about brothers who reunite after a long dispute to open a private security company to their own dismay.

Well, this week we hear that NBC has added a new show titled Ordinary People which is about a married couple in their late 20s who are fast-tracked professionals with four kids. The father figure named Kevin, after spending most of his time on the road as a Rolling Stone music reporter, is promoted to columnist and works from home, a change that requires adjustment for everyone in the family.
