Call it 'Blood Simple', But Funnier

3 November 2009 10:25 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Zhang Yimou promises some comedy in his remake of Blood Simple, which will hit theaters in China on December 11.

In an interview with the Chinese web portal Sina.com, subsequently translated by the Associated Press, the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers described his film as starting off as a comedy, then gradually morphing into a thriller.

"The audience is watching the movie happily, laughing out loud, then it slowly changes, but the transition has to be funny," Zhang said. "That's very hard to do. I think I did a decent job. This is the first time I tried to bridge the two styles."

The film, called San Qiang Pai An Jing Qi in Chinese, centers around a noodle shop owner who plans to kill his cheating wife and her lover. As was the case in Blood Simple, the plot spirals out of control; however, the original revolved around a Texas bar owner. »

'V' On TV, Johnny Damon's World Series Performance And 'Mad Men' In Today's Twitter Report

2 November 2009 11:39 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

No matter which comics faces you may have been following on Twitter this weekend, they were most likely watching the World Series, "V" on SyFy, "Mad Men" or all of the above. Dan Slott and Frank Tieri fell into the first camp, and it seemed like most of the Marvel office was pulling for Alex Rodriguez to earn his salary when he stepped up to the plate. A-Rod's game-winning double was matched in tweets by Yankee's fans only by Johnny Damon's double-base steal.

Meanwhile, the SyFy "V" marathon had Ben Templesmith and Brian Reed's attention. Evidently comic book people like TV shows about alien invasions. Go figure. Check out what they had to say, as well as who was watching "Mad Men," and what Stan Lee had to complain about on Halloween.

It's all after the jump in the Twitter Report for November 2, 2009.

1 November 2009 5:54 PM, PST | AsianMoviePulse | See recent AsianMoviePulse news »

The sequel to the multi award winning Donnie Yen biopic based on the life of Grandmaster Ip Man, picks up right where the first movie left off (Ip Man escaping from the Japanese). This time the start of the movie will focus on Ip Mans battle with another Kung Fu Grandmaster(Sammo Hung). It seems Sammo and Donnie are starting to make quiet the partnership as Sammo will also be appearing in the 14 Blades as well as previously facing off against Donnie Yen in Spl (also directed by Wilson Yip) »

Ong Bak 2: The Beginning Review

30 October 2009 4:41 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

If the balletic and elegant fighting styles of Jackie Chan and Jet Li are the tap and swing of the martial arts world, then Tony Jaa and his Thai cohorts are practicing the Lambada. Jaa, who rose to international popularity in 2005 with Ong Bak, introduced the mainstream to the brutal and direct art of Muy Thai. Utilizing a mixture of feet, elbows and knees—and your head if you can figure a way to fit it in—Muy Thai is Jaa’s signature style. The two come in a package, and after a few other forays into the genre, they are both back with Ong Bak 2. The new entry ups the ante of the original by including more stunts, more enemies and a bigger budget which results in some of the most exciting fight scenes ever put to film.

Jaa, who does all of his own stunts, allegedly without »

Tak Sakaguchi wants The Blood Of Wolves

29 October 2009 9:32 AM, PDT | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

Some early news coming out of this years Afm - on the next project from “Samurai Zombie” director/actor Tak Sakaguchi - that has us bouncing off the frickin walls with excitement! His latest project will apparently be….“A super genre movie, Samurai action drama, mixing original sword action with the latest special effects makeup. The Blood of Wolves will integrate swordplay, monsters and Kung Fu to create an intensive action experience and an extremely entertaining thrill ride that remains exciting from beginning to end.”…Old school, hard core Samurai sword fights, with a liberal dose of Monsters, Zombies and real rather than crappy CGI blood. Pinch us, we’re dreaming. Of course this is all still a long ways off, but below is an early synopsis for the flicks plot, plus a section of Sakaguchi comments about his vision for the film. »

Milla Jovovich To Be a Face in the Crowd

28 October 2009 5:36 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Milla Jovovich is on a hot streak right now. Soon to be seen in theaters in the alien thriller The Fourth Kind, currently filming the next Resident Evil movie, and already signed on for 2010’s Stone, Jovovich has one more project to add to her list.

Jovovich has been cast to star in Forecast Pictures, Radar Films and Minds Eye Entertainment’s psychological thriller Faces in the Crowd.

Faces in the Crowd, written by writer-director Julien Magnat, follows a woman who survives being attacked by a serial killer, but suffers a head injury that leaves her unable to recognize faces. While dealing with this, the woman also has to keep dodging her would-be killer, who plans to get rid of his one witness.

Faces will be Magnat’s first directorial experience in English, and will be produced by Stomp the Yard director Sylvain White and Where the Wild Things Are producer Scott Mednick. »

Yuen Woo-ping Preps his Garnet on the Golden Sand

27 October 2009 9:49 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Sure, the title may not sound like it’s got buckets of martial arts fun waiting for you (”Garnet on the Golden Sand”???), but consider the director involved: Yuen Woo-ping. Westerners will know him as the guy who made the martial arts in Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” and the Wachowskis’ “Matrix” movies look credible, while Asian film enthusiasts will know him more as the man behind such kung fu kickassery as “Drunken Master”, “Iron Monkey”, and Stephen Chow’s “Kung Fu Hustle”. Now the legendary director is set to direct the American-Hong Kong co-production “Garnet on the Golden Sand”. So what’s the deal with this not-very-kung-fu sounding “Garnet on the Golden Sand”? Written by Jun Tan, the film is set in the 17th century, and follows a European merchant and two Chinese swordsmen who are recruited by the leader of a prosperous trade town along the Silk Road »

Kung fu fans who grew up with Black Belt Theater and bootlegs of Drunken Master 2 were probably hoping legendary martial actor Jackie Chan would give us another good Police Story rather than his own version of The Pacifier. But here's the tiger-fisted icon tending to the kiddies in The Spy Next Door. Metallic Attraction: Kungfu Cyborg (2009) Movie Review

9 October 2009 11:53 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

With so many Chinese films still being called ‘Kung Fu’ something or other, and with the continuing global success of Michael Bay’s blockbuster “Transformer” franchise, “Kung Fu Cyborg: Metallic Attraction” was pretty much inevitable. The Hong Kong director getting in on the act is none other than Jeffrey Lau, who previously had hits with the likes of “A Chinese Tall Story” and the classic Stephen Chow “A Chinese Odyssey” vehicles. Perhaps unsurprisingly given Lau’s predilection for the mass mixing of genres, although the film’s advertising suggested non-stop brawling robots, he delivers something quite different, backed by a top cast of Hong Kong and Mainland stars and some boisterously over the top special effects. The film follows Alex Fong (recently in the excellent “I Corrupt all Cops”) as K-1, a state built cyborg who for no discernable reason is sent by his creator (the inimitable Eric Tsang in »

Ellen Page to be Rainn Wilson’s ‘Super’ Sidekick

After her appearance Kitty Pryde in 1989s X-Men: The Last Stand, it seemed that it was only a matter of time before Ellen Page returned to the world of superheroes. During an interview to promote her latest flick, Whip It, Page revealed exclusively to MTV that she has signed on to play Rainn Wilson’s sidekick in the upcoming comedy, Super.

As Page explains, Super is about a “character (Wilson) whose ex-girlfriend gets into a sticky situation and he becomes a superhero, essentially, to solve the problem. I play a slightly eccentric girl who works at a comic book store who really wants to be his sidekick.”

So, what should fans expect from said sidekick, especially one of Page’s caliber? A tricked out motorcycle? Kung Fu moves? Witty repartee?

“Let’s just say there might be some skintight yellow suits,” she revealed. “I don’t know for sure. Who knows what will happen? »

Dave’s Weekly Comic Book Recommendations

30 September 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

There is quite a bit of good stuff coming out this week, most especially is the collected edition of one of my favorite current series. Dark Horse has the collected trade of Umbrella Academy Dallas. This Eisner Award winning book written by My Chemical Romance front-man Gerard Way, and drawn by Casanova’s own Gabriel Ba is a gem of a series.

No matter what you may think of Way’s music, his comic writing is top notch. And if you’ve read Casanova then I shouldn’t have to convince you in regards to Mr. Ba.

From DC, we have the Absolute Promethea edition, its 100 bucks, but the least I can do is turn you on to the real Comics Curmodgeon’s (Alan Moore) ground breaking work with the awesome J.H. Williams III.  We also have the Sleeper Season 2 trade paperback, which if you like Ed Brubaker and »

Pulp Fiction Oscar Winner Sentenced to Jail for Fatal DUI

30 September 2009 6:30 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

He won't be walking the earth like Caine in Kung Fu anytime soon. Roger Avary, the screenwriter who nabbed an Academy Award cowriting Pulp Fiction with Quentin Tarantino, has been sentenced to a year in jail stemming from a fatal 2008 drunken-driving accident that took the life of a friend. Ventura County Superior Court Judge Edward Bordie also gave Avary five years' probation and ordered him to enroll in a DUI education program. Bordie justified the relatively light punishment by stating that the 44-year-old filmmaker had shown remorse and had no criminal background. After initially pleading innocent last December, Avary changed his mind and pleaded guilty Aug. 18 to gross vehicular manslaughter... »

The number of action flicks being released this holiday season are down to a precious few.  Guy Ritchie reboots "Sherlock Holmes" and a little movie from James Cameron called "Avatar."  Things change dramatically in January, however, with the already well-recieved "Daybreakers" and Denzel Washington's return to Sci-Fi, "The Book of Eli," hit theaters.Directed by the Huges Brothers, their first flick since 2001's "From Hell," the post-apocalptic thriller finds Washington as Eli, a lone warrior (almost "Kung Fu" style) protecting a book which appears to be the bible and bringing civilization back to redemption.  Oldman is the defacto warlord of a small... »
