Has 'Prince of Persia' Nailed What It Means to be a Video Game Adaptation?

Jake Gyllenhaal puts on his sexy face in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Photo: Walt Disney Pictures I'm not much of a gamer, and that may in fact be an understatement considering in the last few years the only games I have played and finished are "Gears of War," "Burnout," "Uncharted," "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare" and just a couple of days ago "Uncharted 2." I don't know where that places me in the gamer revolution, but considering that's about 6 years of gaming outside of playing a little "Tiger Woods," "NBA Street" and "Hot Shots Golf" I would say I am on the outside looking in. However, I'd like to think I know enough to at least open up a discussion concerning the growing trend of adapting video games into feature films, primarily based on the recently released trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a film »

World's Worst Director is Back: Uwe Boll's 'Darfur'

4 November 2009 7:33 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I would very much like to begin and program an Uwe Boll Film Festival. It would truly be one of a kind. BloodRayne, Alone in the Dark, In the Name of the King, House of the Dead, Postal - how could you go wrong? On second thought, don't answer that.

Boll keeps working, though most of the universe is at a loss as to how. He has four films in production, and managed to work in four movies this year, too. All of this on the heels of this year's Lifetime Achievement Award from the Razzies, which is not the sort of thing you go to film school in hopes of attaining.

One of his many upcoming films is Darfur, which as you can imagine, is Uwe's sensitive, artistic interpretation of one of the worst genocides in modern civilization. Gee, I wonder if there will be blood. Actually, in the interest of fairness, »

First Trailer for Uwe Boll's Film About the Genocide in Darfur

2 November 2009 4:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Dr. Uwe Boll, the notorious filmmaker behind the likes of House of the Dead, Bloodrayne, In the Name of the King: a Dungeon Siege Tale, Alone in the Dark, and Postal, has made a film - a serious one - about the ongoing conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan. I imagine you're as surprised as everyone else.

I first heard about the film, titled simply Darfur, about a month ago at the Fantastic Fest Q&A for Boll's man-on-a-killing-spree movie Rampage. The director casually referred to the film as if it was no big deal, though it was obvious that everyone in the room was as stunned as I. When pressed for more information, Boll explained that he felt the world was turning a blind eye to the crimes against humanity that are committed daily in Darfur, and that as an artist, the »

The Sandbox: Five Rules for Making a Decent Video Game Adaptation

23 October 2009 11:08 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

For the past 20 years or so, Hollywood has seemed intent on proving that video games aren't fit to be cinematic source material. How else to explain the dismal quality of the average game-to-film adaptation? But games and movies aren't inherently incompatible, provided that directors use some common sense when heading down that treacherous adaptation path. Here's my list of five guidelines that, if followed to the letter, should help future filmmakers succeed where so many before them have stumbled.

1. Costume changes are okay.

As with comics, video game heroes are often defined by their distinctive get-ups. And in certain instances -- like Lara Croft's snug spelunking short-shorts and T-shirt -- those outfits are capable of making a relatively easy transition to the silver screen. But the rest of the time, keeping a little too close to a game character's clothing makes it impossible to take the material seriously.

Fantastic Fest: Uwe Boll, Auteur

5 October 2009 11:44 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Two things spread quickly at film festivals: upper respiratory tract infections and buzz. And the buzz spreading around Fantastic Fest last week was that the impossible had happened: that Uwe Boll, the infamous director of notoriously (and, at times, enjoyably) terrible films like "Alone in the Dark" and "BloodRayne," had made a good movie. Film School Rejects declared Boll's new film "Rampage" "sick, violent, and fun"; /Film called it "not just good in comparison to the rest of his filmography, but a good movie in its own right."

Usually Boll's movies aren't just bad, they're splendidly bad. They're lazily plotted, haphazardly shot and confusingly edited, and yet, somehow, in the alchemical confluence of all that badness they take on a certain transcendent magic. Many of his past efforts were financed through a now-defunct German tax shelter that, if I understand it correctly, only required independent film investors to pay taxes »

Is ‘Rampage’ Uwe Boll’s First Good Movie?

5 October 2009 9:30 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

No you didn’t read the title wrong and no, Screen Rant isn’t pulling your chain. As I sit here in Hell putting on my winter parka, I find myself reading rumblings from the web that the most famous blind squirrel in Hollywood history may have actually found his nut. That’s right; it would appear that Uwe Boll (BloodRayne, House of the Dead) has actually made a Good movie with Rampage. So now we have to decide: is the world coming to an end or has the director actually found his stride?

Now, it would appear through word of mouth at Fantastic Fest that Uwe Boll’s latest offering, Rampage, is actually Good! Yeah, I know, pick your jaw up off the floor. Rampage stars Brendan Fletcher as a guy that gets fed up with his life, so he builds a suit made of Kevlar, stocks up on »

Fantastic Fest 09: Pigs can still fly. Another glowing review of Rampage

Review by: rochefort

Rating: 8 out of 10

[Editor's note: This is our Second glowing review of Rampage from that director we all really hate. You can read our first from L'Etrange here.]

"House of the Dead". "Alone in the Dark". "In the Name of the King". Picture in your head an image or two from any of these movies. Now try these: "Taxi Driver". "Falling Down". "The King of Comedy". "Combat Shock". It's a pretty dissonant mix, I admit, but it goes some way to explaining just how messed up it is to walk out of a movie by one of fandom's most reviled directors thinking we're all about to eat some crow. "Rampage", the latest film by boxer/director Uwe Boll, every film critic's favorite whipping boy, is a good movie. A really good one.

Uwe Boll's Rampage is Getting Glowing Reviews

30 September 2009 8:30 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Uwe Boll has been called the worst director of all time for such bombs as "House of the Dead," "Alone in the Dark" and "BloodRayne." But now, several critics who have had the chance to see his "Rampage" thriller are claiming that the film is actually good... Very good. "Rampage" revolves around Bill who grows fed up with his dead end existence and the world in general. Bill decides to vent his frustrations by stock-piling an arsenal of high-powered weaponry and constructing a full-body Kevlar suit of armor to go on a murderous rampage through the streets of his hometown, killing everyone in sight. Check out the trailer and some reviews of the film below: SlashFilm.com: Uwe Boll has made a good movie. Not a great movie, but a decent film. Not just good in comparison to the rest of his filmography, but a good movie in its own right. »

Smash Cut to screen at the Trinity Of Terrors!

The much-talked about H.G. Lewis-inspired Smash Cut has been added to our Fango Film Fest for the inaugural Fangoria Trinity Of Terrors taking place October 30 through November 1 at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas!

Able Whitman (David Hess - appearing at The Trinity!) is a horror-film director whose movies are panned by critics and audiences alike — until he starts killing people and using their body parts as props in his new flick.

Now, only intrepid Smash Cut. reporter April Carson (Sasha Grey) and celebrated private detective Isaac Beaumonde (Jesse Buck) stand between the demonic director and his unquenchable thirst for butchery at 24 frames per second!

Inspired by the career and filmography of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Smash Cut is a gore-splattered satire of the blood sport known as filmmaking.

This director's cut bleeds!

Blue Skies for 'Cloudy,'Hazy Starts for 'Surrogates,' 'Fame'

27 September 2009 11:23 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Moviegoers came back for a second helping of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, but the new items on the menu, Surrogates and Fame, didn't fly. That led to a weekend that was off seven percent from the same timeframe last year when Eagle Eye landed. Standing as the only broadly appealing movie among recent releases, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs dissipated by a mere 19 percent, generating an estimated $24.6 million and lifting its total to a solid $60 million in ten days. Its drop was less than such comparable titles as Open Season, Meet the Robinsons and Chicken Little, though it may have a steeper decline in its third weekend, when the Toy Story double feature will claim much of its 3D attention. Surrogates plugged in with an estimated $15 million on approximately 3,600 screens at 2,951 sites, or a fraction of what the similar I, Robot started at. The science fiction thriller »

Rotten Tomatoes Picks the Worst Movies of the Decade

25 September 2009 12:27 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

When it comes to reviewing movies, I've always found that one of the most difficult things is not deciding whether a movie is good or bad, but rather, deciding whether a movie is bad or downright terrible. Make no mistake, there are many different levels of bad movies, but does anyone really care to get down to the nitty gritty of debating which ones are slightly better than others? It just seems like a colossal waste of energy. Fortunately, the good folks over at Rotten Tomatoes [1] have recently decided to sift through their vast review archives to give us the definitive Worst of the Worst list [2] for the past 10 years in film. I don't think there are too many surprises here, although the good news is that I think quite a few of these are movies that no one has seen. Maybe now they'll finally find the audience they deserve! »

How Bad Can It Get? Rt's Worst of the Worst List Will Tell You!

Over the last decade, we've collected reviews for thousands of movies. Most films, even profoundly mediocre ones, can expect to receive at least cursory support from the pundits. However, once in a while, a film will take such a critical drubbing that further attention is warranted. That's where our Worst of the Worst list comes in. We've compiled a veritable cornucopia of dull, foolhardy, and outright terrible films, from legendary duds (Battlefield Earth) to chuckle-deficient comedies (Epic Movie), from hapless sequels (Basic Instinct 2) to scare-free would-be fright fests (Alone in the Dark). Uwe boll’s Tunnel Rats: Review

Director: Uwe Boll. Review: Adam Wing. Fans of quality filmmaking beware, Uwe boll is back behind the camera and this time he’s taking no prisoners. If you’ve never heard of Uwe Boll then stop reading now, you still have time to erase his name from your memory, a name synonymous with the worst kinds of cinematic evil. Still reading? Damn you, damn you all to Z-movie madness for ever. In The Name Of The King, BloodRayne, Alone In The Dark and my personal ‘favourite’, House Of The Dead. Sound familiar? They certainly should do, they’re the kind of movies we’ve all been forced to witness at one time or another and we all use the same tired excuses. The artwork was misleading, Blockbuster’s had nothing else in, and I swear I never put that one on my rental list. Whatever the reasoning, the outcome is always the same. »
