Danny Boyle, whose "Slumdog Millionaire" won a ridiculous eight Oscars, is prepping his next project with Fox Searchlight: "127 Hours," a drama focusing on the story of mountaineer Aron Ralston.
Simon Beaufoy, who wrote "Slumdog," is in talks to write the script from a treatment by Boyle. Variety says the plan right now is to have the film ready for release by late 2010.
"127 Hours" is based on the true story of Aron Ralston, who amputated his own limb and rescued himself after his arm got pinned under a boulder for almost five days during a climb in Utah in 2003.
Boyle's directing credits also include "Sunshine," "Millions" and "28 Days Later." "127 Hours" sounds like an intense project, and I'm already interested to see what Boyle ends up doing with it. »

As part of the announcement today that Danny Boyle has signed a three-year deal with Fox Searchlight and Pathe, the La Times hints that Boyle's next project might be a drama about American mountain climber Aron Ralston. Fresh off of winning the Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire, Boyle has signed a deal with Fox Searchlight and Pathe Pictures, who will co-finance and co-produce all of Boyle's projects for at least the next three years. Boyle previously worked with Searchlight on Slumdog Millionaire as well as 28 Days Later, Millions, and Sunshine, so the two are already acquainted. Should be a great few years for them! As for Boyle's next project, the La Times says that the Ralston film is "a possible initial production" under the new Searchlight deal. However, Variety says that "the director has yet to announce his next film" but over on the Risky Biz Blog they say that "the »

Danny Boyle has drawn up a three-year production deal with Fox Searchlight and Pathe Pictures, according to Variety. Both companies were involved in Slumdog Millionaire; through this deal the two companies will co-finance and co-produce Boyle's next project(s) over the next three years, with Pathe handing distribution in much of Europe and Fox Searchlight controlling the Us and other territories. The filmmaker has a long history with Fox Searchlight, as the company produced and/or distributed 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Millions. More important is that Fox Searchlight is the company that initially passed on Slumdog Millionaire, then stepped in at the last minute to distribute the film after Warner Independent Pictures faced closure and thought about sending the film direct to DVD. Searchlight then helped campaign like crazy for the film during Oscar season. Seems natural for the company and filmmaker to make a pact. Unfortunately, we might only »

Mike Newell has been directing films since the 1960s yet his name is primarily known by today's movie going audience as the director of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Then again, maybe it is films that live on in the memories of most more than the name considering he directed the likes of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco and the Oscar-nominated Enchanted April which is seeing a special edition release in May. Up next for the helmer is the sword and sandal epic Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time based on the video game starring Jake Gyllenhaal and due in theaters on May 28, 2010, but Variety brings word of his follow-up feature based on a 1930s children's novel. Newell is set to direct The Box of Delights based on John Masefield's novel about a boy entrusted with a magic box that allows him to travel through time. »

"Slumdog Millionaire" reviewby Peter Dimako, Editor I recall being asked a few times if I had a favorite film and I would always reply that it’s an impossible question to answer as there are a few greats through many generations. “Slumdog Millionaire” is, to this date, the motion picture that has touched me most. This is the greatest film I have ever had the privilege to view. When interviewing Danny Boyle for his other gem “Millions” back in the days when we were located in Atlanta, I was most impressed with how comfortable Mr. Boyle makes one feel and how interested he is in you as a person. He focuses on you and shows real interest, listening carefully to your answer as if you matter as much as he. Perhaps this was largely due to my South African upbringing and family history. In any case, he has a calmness »

Back in September, Coming Soon reported that Danny Boyle was working with DreamWorks on an animated film based on Terry Pritchard's "Bromeliad trilogy" of novels. He was reportedly working with Frank Cottrell Boyce, a writer he previously worked with on Millions. But then in December, MTV reported that it probably wasn't going to happen (Boyle was quoted as saying, "it's fallen apart"). This was all, of course, before Boyle's big Oscar win for Slumdog Millionaire. So... »

The news that Slumdog Millionaire screenwriter Simon Beaufoy is set to direct a film called Truckers for DreamWorks Animation is exciting stuff, even though nothing's been confirmed about the storyline as yet. Why? Well, because we think we might know what it's about. If you remember a couple of months back, Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle did a webchat here on Empire, and was asked about the fate of his once-mooted adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Bromeliad series. He said that he and his Millions screenwriter Frank Cotrell Boyce had been working on it for DreamWorks animation "but sadly no longer". Given that the first book of that series is called Truckers, and that Beaufoy worked with Boyle on Slumdog, isn't it possible that this is in fact the same project? The Bromeliad trilogy tells the story of a race of tiny people called nomes living in the nooks and crannies of a department store, »

For a good while, the term "game show music" was epitomized by the clicking sound of "Jeopardy" or the goofy opening of "The Price is Right". That is, until "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" came along, becoming one of the first game shows with wall-to-wall music where the tunes played in the background can have a huge affect on the players sitting in that high chair... Below you will find an interview with Matthew Strachan, the younger member of the father/son team who composed the music for "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?", which is used in all the internationally syndicated versions of the show. This for instance is the new British theme, which (as you'll learn from the interview) is a remix of the classic theme:
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is perhaps one of the most popular game series running in the world. How were »
