‘An American Werewolf’ Goes To The Weinstein Company

It's not new news that John Landis' classic An American Werewolf In London is on track for a remake.  We've known for a while that some foolish production company would be bank-rolling it even though common wisdom says it's going to suck.  (Or bite.)  But who in Hollywood would be stupid and/or egotistical enough to believe a remake could improve upon (or even replicate) the original's perfect hybrid of horror and humor?  Who?!? BloodyDisgusting reported over the weekend that Landis has sold the remake rights to The Weinstein Company's Dimension Films.  Cue groans from film-lovers around the world. I'm not against remakes in general... if a film can be improved in some way then I say go for it.  If it fails, the original is still available.  But what can be made better here?  As I said above the movie is a near-perfect mix of humor and horror.  The »

Dimension Films to Remake An American Werewolf in London

30 June 2009 3:53 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The Hollywood Reporter says that Dimension Films has acquired the rights to An American Werewolf in London from John Landis, who wrote and directed the 1981 classic horror-comedy hybrid.

Landis's movie tells the story of an American tourist who is attacked by a werewolf while backpacking across the United Kingdom. He eventually turns into a werewolf and proceeds to terrorize London. The remake will be produced by Sean Furst and Bryan Furst, who oversaw The Cooler and The Matador and also worked on the upcoming Daybreakers, starring Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Isabel Lucas.

No writers or directors have been attached to the project yet, but Dimension hopes to "make an elevated genre picture that will keep the fun comedy elements of the original as it seeks to be relevant to contemporary audiences." Like Twilight's tremendous audience, perhaps?

Here's the trailer for the original:

2 June 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Richard Shepard is set to continue working in awkward comedy formulas, after The Matador and The Hunting Party he'll be taking on a remake of an Israeli film for Overture films. Scripted by Daniel Taplitz and smartly re-baptized as The Angriest Man in Brooklyn, this is based on 1997 Israeli film "Mar Baum" (written and directed by Assi Dayan, son of the late Israeli defense minister Moshe Dayan) and tells the tale of a man who, upon learning he is about to die, must decide whether to spend his limited time (92 minutes) rushing to get things done or slow down and enjoy his final moments. The project was kicking around since 2004 when Revolution Studios had optioned the remake.  ... »

Let The Right One In (Magnolia) An awkward 12 year-old boy, ignored by his mother and the target of bullies, finds himself drawn to his new neighbor: a girl his own age who only appears at night, and seems herself to be as lonely an outcast as he. Haunting film from Sweden is best described as The 400 Blows meets Nosferatu, and contains some of the most haunting imagery of any film in recent memory. Truly a unique and memorable work. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Featurette; Photo and poster gallery. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount offers two more classic titles, restored, remastered and loaded with extras. Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief stars Cary Grant as a retired jewel thief trying to enjoy his sunset years on the French Riviera with a minimum of drama, until he catches the eye of a high-maintenance heiress (Grace Kelly, »
