Cool
Ju-On (The Grudge to you westerners) director Takashi Shimizu will begin work on his next project, an English-language horror thriller about a song so horrific, so depressing and macabre, that it drives whomever listens to it to suicide. Think Ringu meets Lady Gaga.
Penned by Chris Philpott (Fairytales and Pornography), the unnamed feature will be produced by Taka Ichise (Ringu) along with Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer and Brad Fischer. The idea of a killer song came directly from Shimizu and Ichise
Shimizu is currently wrapping up The Shock Labyrinth, Japan’s first live-action 3D flick. The film is based on a popular haunted house attraction at Fuji-q High Land, an amusement park near Mt. Fuji and is apparently the world’s longest horror house walk-through. A group of teenagers (it’s never 30-somethings) take a sick friend to an old hospital (it’s never new modernized hospitals) and discover »

Following his latest work on the upcoming fright flick The Shock Labyrinth, Takashi Shimizu (“Ju-On,” “The Grudge”) has signed up to direct another horror movie, this time for U.S. based Phoenix Pictures. Based on an idea by producer Taka Ichise and Shimizu, the as yet untitled project will follow the story about a haunted song that drives its listeners to suicide. Early thoughts story wise, is that its all sounding very much like yet another American re-hash of an Asian horror. The “hashee” being Masate Harade’s 2007 Suicide Song, but we’ll have to wait and see. »

We’ve all, at some point in our lives, been haunted by a song; the infernal earworm that lodges in our heads and refuses – despite official eviction notices and burly bailiffs – to leave. Today’s Empire earworm, for reasons far beyond our ken, is Travis’ Writing To Reach You. Bastard bloody Travis, Get Out Of Our Heads!Anyway, Japanese director Takashi Shimizu – the guy who made us all jump with his haunted house flick, Ju-On (aka The Grudge) – has lined up his next film, and it takes the concept of an earworm to its logical conclusion: what if a song could actually haunt you?The untitled English-language movie, written by Chris Philpott, concerns a song so haunting that it drives all who listen to it to suicide. Which means it’s not a million miles away from the haunted lullaby in Chuck Palahniuk’s, erm, Lullaby, and maybe even closer »

The man who proved to us that no one on the planet can hold a Grudge quite like the Japanese, Takashi Shimizu, is getting geared up to bring us yet another slice of shiver fodder that is guaranteed to put a song in your heart ... and then stop it dead.
Variety reports that the director behind the Ju-On franchise and its English remake Grudge series is getting set to direct an as of yet untitled thriller about a haunted song that drives its listeners to suicide. Chris Philpott penned the script based on an idea by producer Taka Ichise and Shimizu himself. Phoenix Pictures will produce.
We can only pray that said song is not the one included below. Lord knows it has come really close to setting forth a supernatural catastrophe.

Today's casting notes are mildly interesting, but nothing spectacular so why not a quick rundown of what's what? First off "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm has joined the cast of Zack Snyder's action fantasy Sucker Punch joining Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, Abbie Cornish and Carla Gugino in the 1950s-set tale of a girl (Browning) confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. She and her friends enter an alternate reality where they begin planning an escape. Hamm's character details are unknown, but his character's name is High Roller. [THR] Rosario Dawson has joined the turbulent production of Tony Scott's Unstoppable alongside Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. The film stars Washington as a veteran engineer who jumps into a locomotive with a young conductor (Pine) to stop an unmanned runaway train loaded with toxic cargo. [Variety] Neil Labute »

Bill Pullman may not be the first person who comes to mind when you think “genre veteran.” But the actor who is perhaps best known for such populist entertainments as Independence Day and While You Were Sleeping has taken a number of cinematic trips to the dark side, most notably under the guidance of the Lynch family. Having starred in David’s 1997 mind-teaser Lost Highway, he now can be seen as the lead in daughter Jennifer’s Surveillance, out this week on DVD and Blu-ray from Magnolia Home Entertainment’s Magnet Pictures banner.
Pullman stars in the film with Julia Ormond as FBI agents Hallaway and Anderson, who arrive at a rural police station to investigate a grisly roadside massacre. A trio of badly shaken witnesses survived the bloody incident, and the particulars of what happened gradually come together through their dramatized recollections as they are separately interviewed. One, a »

The trailer for Ju-On creator Takashi Shimizu's latest dive into the terror deep, The Shock Labyrinth in 3D, is now available. Say what you want about the guy and his films. He knows his stuff when it comes to making movies about really creepy ghosts that are pretty pissed off.
The trailer comes from the official Shock Labyrinth website, which unfortunately unless you speak Japanese you're probably gonna have a real devil of a time finding, as you have to navigate through a haunted house to discover it. That being said ... we did the legwork for you, so dig on the trailer in all its spookiness below.
The film follows a group of teenagers dealing with the sudden return of a friend who went missing a decade ago. When the friend falls ill, they take her to a hospital but end up trapped in a labyrinthine haunted house.

Need proof that the current wave of 3D films is more than just a passing fad? How about the fact that 3D capable screens are now being installed all around the globe, Korea has just announced their first ever 3D horror film and Japan is poised to release their own 3D entry in late September.
Takashi Shimizu’s The Shock Labyrinth is a a film we reported on a while back, the island nation’s first 3D horror film entrusted to the director of the hugely popular Ju-On series of films as well as artier fare like Marebito. Based on - and set in - a popular Japanese theme park ride, The Shock Labyrinth seems like a bit of a rushed production job, even by speedy Japanese standards, but having gone into production just months ago the release date is already just a month away and the first teaser has »

Ju-On: The Grudge for the Wii takes place in the fantastical movie universe we’ve come to love. There are no nubile young hussies who seem to beg for a beheading here. You are just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and now you and your family are cursed for it.
Xseed Games is calling this a “Haunted House Simulator” like going to a Halloween horror park or, on a lesser level, an interactive version of a very basic horror movie with jump scares abounding and your only objective being to get out alive. Any casual player can pick up the Wiimote and run with it. Armed with only a flashlight, you dive into the action. I use that term loosely as the first thing you’ll notice is your character does not move very fast. This is completely on purpose so as to heighten the anticipation »

Hollywood's unofficial motto is "anything you can do, we can do better." Or at least in English, with a bigger budget. But not always bigger scares. Japan's creepy Ringu (Rotten Tomato score: 97%) gets handed to Gore Verbinski and turned into The Ring (score: 71%). Spain's first-person chiller [Rec] (score: 95%) becomes the slightly less terrifying Quarantine (59%). Sometimes the studios even import the director of the original, like George Sluizer's The Vanishing (1988 in the Netherlands, 1993 in the Us) or Takashi Shimizu's Ju-On (2002), remade stateside as The Grudge two years later. So we're thinking there oughta be a word for this trend. What... »

Director: Toby Wilkins. Review: Adam Wing Once the curse starts, it can’t be stopped. That’s pretty much how Grudge 3 director Toby Wilkins puts it, which means we can probably expect more additions to the ever-advancing saga that refuses to die. This is of course the third instalment of the American series started by original Ju-on creator Takashi Shimizu back in 2004, there are two more Japanese sequels coming later this year. Do we really need this many calcium deficient dead folk in our living rooms? A young Japanese woman who holds the key to stopping the evil spirit of Kayako travels to the haunted Chicago apartment from the sequel (you remember, don’t you?), to stop the curse of Kayako once and for all and save a family who are currently being haunted by her malicious spirit. Which loosely translates to yet more pale-faced ghost ladies and cute little »

It has been three years since Takashi Shimizu stood beside a film camera and worn his directorial hat—literally. Eschewing the black leather cap that was seemingly glued to his head throughout the production of the Japanese Ju-on and American Grudge movies that made his name, Shimizu is not only sporting new headwear for his newest feature, but is also shooting with a new, custom 3-D digital system, the first for such a production in Japan.
Journeying down to the city of Tateyama, Fango paid a visit to the set of The Shock Labyrinth 3D last week to catch up with director Shimizu’s return to feature filmmaking. Within the peeling walls of a local hospital, Shimizu and his crew are hard at work on one of the final days of shooting. Seated behind a large LCD monitor, the filmmaker reaches over to a spare set of 3-D glasses and hands them to this writer. »
