The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year?

Variety reports that Paramount Pictures via Ivan Reitman and Tom Pollock's Montecito Picture Co. have picked up Martini's original screenplay and have attached him to direct the pic. - Let's hope that the stars are aligned for Derick Martini's sophomore feature. Lymelife, Martini's debut film, a suburban family drama remained a projects in the works for several years before receiving the green light and while it didn't pull in Adventureland-like numbers, I think it managed to showcase the filmmaker's aptitudes, which would most certainly come in handy for one more project that uproots the family tree. That title alone is interesting enough. I'm hoping that a few of you out there caught the wonderful indie film Lymelife at a festival or in theaters earlier this year. If not, go rent it and watch it, it's a great film. Variety has announced that writer and director Derick Martini, who spent more than seven years of his life developing Lymelife, has setup his next film at Paramount. The comedy is called I Am My Family's Secret and will be produced by Ivan Reitman and Tom Pollock's Montecito Picture Co. and distributed by Paramount. I can't wait to see who they cast in this, as I'm sure Derick Martini will pick some great actors.

Derick Martini's Lymelife garnered some real attention at this year's Sundance Film Festival, where our Kelly West celebrated the film's "timeless quality." Even though it didn't make much of a splash upon its release, as can be the case with so many Sundance hits, it was enough to get Martini the attention needed to make a second feature.
According to Variety, Paramount has picked up Martini to write and direct his next film, I Am My Family's Secret, a comedy that, like Lymelife, revolves around a pair of brothers and secrets kept by their parents. In his first film Martini had real-life brothers Kieran and Rory Culkin playing the lead characters, and it's hard to imagine casting more serendipitous than that. Maybe if they throw in Macaulay for good measure?

Paramount has picked up Lymelife writer-director Derick Martini's original screenplay I Am My Family's Secret and has set Martini to direct.
According to Variety, the comedy revolves around two very different brothers who discover their parents have been hiding a life-changing secret for more than two decades.
Lymelife, Martini's directorial debut, was exec produced by Martin Scorsese and starred Alec Baldwin, Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, Kieran Culkin and Cynthia Nixon. It won the Fipresci prize at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival.
No production date has been set.

I'm late to the game on Big Fan, I know-Robert Siegel's tough, warm, up-close, compassionate, merciless little drama about the big football passions of a little shmo came and mostly went in early September. (Owen gave it love on the page.) Me, I didn't see the movie until just the other week, and I was knocked out by the utterly honest performances of Oswalt (a great comedian playing nakedly serious) and Corrigan (a great character actor throwing himself into the part with typical ferocity).
See it, is what I'm saying; I guarantee you'll be hearing more about Big Fan on year-end best lists.

On Monday, October 19, the Independent Filmmaker Project has announced the nominees for the 19th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, unraveling the dominance of "The Hurt Locker" and "Big Fan". Both feature films received the most nominations with three gongs each, and will battle it out in two categories, Best Feature and Breakthrough Actor.
In the Best Feature category, the two are up against Cherien Dabis' "Amreeka", Sebastian Silva's "The Maid" and the Coen brothers' "A Serious Man". As for the actor title, "Hurt Locker" enlisted Jeremy Renner and "Big Fan" put Patton Oswalt in competition with Ben Foster, Catalina Saavedra and Soulemane Sy Savane.
The third nod "Hurt Locker" collected is for Best Ensemble Performance, placing it to compete against "Adventureland" and "Cold Souls" among other movies. "The Hurt Locker's" march to the Oscars has begun! The film, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, is nominated for best feature, breakthrough actor, and best ensemble performance at the 19th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards.
Robert Siegel's "Big Fan" also topped the Gotham nominations with best features, breakthrough actor, and breakthrough director noms.
"The Hurt Locker" is one of my favorite films this year (Click Watch My Top 10 Best Movies of Summer 2009!) so I'm rooting for this brilliant flick!
Bigelow, Natalie Portman, and Stanley Tucci, and producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will each be presented with a career tribute.
The ceremony will be held Nov. 30 at Cipriani Wall Street.

Kathryn Bigelow's hard-hitting war drama The Hurt Locker has emerged as an early Oscars favourite after picking up a string of nominations for the upcoming Gotham Independent Film Awards, one of the season's first big prizegivings.
The movie will be up against Amreeka, Big Fan, The Maid and A Serious Man in the Best Feature category, while star Jeremy Renner will fight for the Breakthrough Actor prize and he and his castmates are up for Best Ensemble Performance.
Meanwhile, director Bigelow will be among the filmmakers and stars honoured with tributes at the 19th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, held in New York on 30 November. Natalie Portman, Stanley Tucci and producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will also be presented with career tributes.
Meanwhile, Chis Rock's Good Hair will compete with Food, Inc., My Neighbor My Killer, Paradise and Tyson for the Best Documentary prize and Cruz Angeles (Don’t Let Me Down), Frazer Bradshaw (Everything Strange and New), Noah Buschel (The Missing Person), Derick Martini (Lymelife) and Robert Siegel (Big Fan) will fight for the Breakthrough Director award.
Up against Renner in the Breakthrough Actor category are Ben Foster (The Messenger), comedian Patton Oswalt (Big Fan), Catalina Saavedra (The Maid) and Soulemane Sy Savane (Goodbye Solo).

We have our first batch of conversation starter nominees as nominees were announced this morning for the 19th Annual Gotham Independent Film Award, with Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker and Robert Siegel's Big Fan each earning three nominations with The Hurt Locker also set to receive Gotham's tribute award. In addition to the competitive awards, director Kathryn Bigelow, actors Natalie Portman and Stanley Tucci, and producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, will each be presented with a career tribute.
While I wouldn't expect Big Fan to do much outside the indie realm, this is a great start for The Hurt Locker as the film, the ensemble and Jeremy Renner were both singled out. Could Renner still land a Best Actor nomination?

Chicago – Only a few short weeks ago, I sat through the two-hour shrug-fest that is Ang Lee’s “Taking Woodstock” and lamented how so many of the film’s interactions between parents and the younger generation were played for cartoonish laughs instead of striving for the haunting poignancy of the director’s 1997 family drama “The Ice Storm.” Well, upon viewing Derick Martini’s “Lymelife,” I determined that the cliché is true: Be careful what you wish for.

As the summer movie season draws to a close, more serious minded films will begin flooding the multiplexes, mostly in search of Oscar love. For those who’d prefer to experience some Oscar-baiting, fall movie gravitas at home, the coming of age drama Lymelife arrives on Blu-ray and DVD this week. This quirky tale of a 15-year old Long Island teen experiencing first love, parental discord, and disease-carrying tick paranoia, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last January before receiving a brief theatrical run back in April. Clearly modeled after the award winning suburban angst dramas American Beauty and The Ice Storm, and featuring a solid ensemble cast that includes Alec Baldwin, Timothy Hutton, Cynthia Nixon, Emma Roberts and Rory and Kieran Culkin, the film didn’t receive much Oscar prognostication from critics, and went largely ignored by moviegoers who preferred April’s Beyonce Knowles/Ali Larter catfight to Lymelife

Being a teenager is hard work. Growing up, and all the tribulations that come along with it, have been the subject of a great many films. The coming of age movie is tricky and, unfortunately, we recently lost John Hughes, one of the men who perfected the art of holding up a mirror to our growing pains. This month marks the DVD and Blu-ray release of one of the best coming of age films in recent memory: Adventureland. It’s so good that I absolutely refuse to summarize the plot in hopes that you’ll watch it. To be honest, I’ve always had two guilty pleasure genres: horror and coming of age. After becoming the youngest actor to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar at age 20 for Ordinary People, Hutton never stopped working, launching a career full of diverse roles in film and television.
