Comedy Central's stand-up specials tend to fall one of two ways: really good or really bad. There is never an in-between; the comics are either funny or they aren't. On the funny half you have acts like Lewis Black, Todd Barry, Todd Glass, and now, newcomer GABRIEL IGLESIAS.
Iglesias got his start on Nickelodeon's "All That", an absolutely dreadful sketch comedy show that used--nay, misused--an urban/hip-hop style to showcase up'n'coming entertainers. The problem with the show wasn't with its performers, but with its writers. Even to preteens (the show's target audience) the skits were incredibly lame--though not quite as bad as the ones featured in Nick's short-lived, identical series ROUNDHOUSE. The actors all did their best to work with the horrible material they were given, and on occasion, they could actually make it work. Iglesias, by far, was one of the guys who could consistently make just about anything seem funny just by his delivery.
Watching this show was a real treat. Gabriel Iglesias was funnier than I could've possibly imagined. He was firing on all cylinders the entire show, and--this is a rare occurrence with most stand-up comedians--didn't tell a single bad joke. And though I'm not a fan of racial humor, his reliance on Latino stereotypes is harmless and inoffensive, and works to provide subtle satire and social commentary that wouldn't really have succeeded otherwise.
I wish the best of luck to Mr. Iglesias and his success, and hopefully he will be featured in many more movies, TV shows, and comedy specials to come. Now if only those jackoffs at Nickelodeon would've let him do some of ALL THAT's writing...
