References
The Ladies Man (1961)
 -  The scenes with the Belafonte seen in cross-section mirror the "Dollhouse" scenes with the cross-sectioned house in 'The Ladies Man'.
Jules et Jim (1962)
 -  When Zissou says to Klaus "Not this one, Klaus," in regards to Cate Blanchett's character, the line is a reference to when Jules says "Not this one, Jim" regarding Jeanne Moreau's character in that film.
(1963)
 -  Both scenes involving aerial shots of character's feet (in the Hot Air Balloon as well as the shot before the helicopter crashes) are homages to Fellini's '8½'
Yellow Submarine (1968)
 -  In the climactic "Jaguar Shark" sequence, the whole crew rides in a yellow submarine. Also, the look of this sequence during the submarine ride seems to be very obviously referencing the famous Beatles film, with it's semi-two dimensional, cartoony look.
"Boney" (1972)
 -  Score from "Boney" can be heard after the showing of Steve's film towards the end.
The Day of the Dolphin (1973)
 -  George C. Scott's character has this compound on an island that inspired the research island that Steve Zissou has.
Jaws (1975)
 -  General plots are the same (The hunt for an exceptionally large maneating shark); dialogue, "I'll fight it but I won't kill it."
Fitzcarraldo (1982)
 -  A scene in which the ship's crew disagrees with the captain's desired course, so the Captain asks those who want to leave to step forward.
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)
 -  Walking scene at the end of the movie, Wes Anderson has said it was an homage to the '84 sci-fi comedy.
Bottle Rocket (1996)
 -  One of the closing shots of footage is of Bill Murray and Owen Wilson pointing off into the distance. This image is nearly identical to the picture used on the cover of the film Bottle Rocket, also by Wes Anderson.
Highball (1997)
 -  Noah Baumbach (co-writer) plays the character of Phillip in one scene, a reprisal of his role in his early film "Highball"
Rushmore (1998)
 -  The shot with the note and the feet is directly from Rushmore.
Mission to Mars (2000)
 -  The space suit in the Adventurers' Club is from another Touchstone movie, Mission to Mars.
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
 -  The score that plays on the soundtrack when Steve Zissou gives the tour of his boat is actually a theme from 'The Royal Tenenbaums' being played in reverse.
