A humorous documentary that manages to convey some emotion as well, 30 April 2005

I originally wanted to see "Out of Breath" because I am from Columbia, and I wanted to see how a documentary would look there. What I received in the mail, from Peter Gerard himself, was an entertaining half-hour look at the disillusionment of youth in Columbia. It's promoted as being about the youth of the 90s as well, but it seemed to me that was a topic merely because all of their subjects had been youth in the 90s. Still, the stories jumped around from vivid descriptions of the black-hole nature of the town to paintings of what an exciting place it remains.

Much was gone into of the local drug culture (perhas a little too much), But after they get off this topic, things like authority figures and local music is gone into. Complete with a surprise interview with the guy from the Flaming Lips (well, it surprised me), the music scene is touched upon with discussions of how hip-hop is making it into the town in a good way.

The movie also contains many humorous portions, including an ongoing interview with a Subway worker who lets a customer serve himself instead of stopping the interview to help him. There is also much footage of places they weren't allowed to interview people at, and got kicked out of because of it.

All in all, it seems like an inexpensive with soul-filled look at what youth want in Columbia. What they appear to want is something to happen. I recommend this film, and hope that at some point becomes available for regular distribution.
