Three Years Ago Today, The Prestige...

...premiered in Hollywood. My how things have changed. Remember when we didn't know who Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) was or that Christopher Nolan would soon make one of the biggest hits of all time. Remember when people were still regularly talking about Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) and everyone was still hugely fond of Christian Bale? Good times.

Things change so quickly in Hollywood. But then there's Hugh Jackman. Some things remain the same. Some gold never loses its lustre.

Lovely Bones: Cynical Awards Fodder Or Box Office Gold?

14 October 2009 10:04 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

The Lovely Bones has been a decade-long project: traversing continents; switching directors; growing in budget; Ryan Gosling fired; Mark Wahlberg hired; delayed for almost a year. Alarm bells start to ring. Despite all the rumours and gossip-mongering Peter Jackson’s latest feature has been, rather cynically, held back for “awards season”. In other words, the studio is unsure of how its product is going to play at the box office, so is hoping critical praise might help.

What started off as a Film Four production with Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsey has turned into an effects-laden, multi-million dollar behemoth. The trailer hit the internet in August and instantly recalled fellow Kiwi filmmaker Vincent Ward’s “beautiful disaster” What Dreams May Come. The similarities in tone and imagery are striking (dodgy wigs included).

The inexorable rise of Peter Jackson appears utterly incongruous given his origins in low budget splatter-horror. But is it? »

Are You Surprised Naomi Is the "Most Bankable" Actress in Hollywood?

8 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber hopped onto their Vespa together in NYC yesterday. Their preferred mode of transportation may be economical, and it turns out Naomi herself is a wise money choice - she just topped a list of the most "Bankable Actresses in Hollywood." She is ahead of Jennifer Connelly and Rachel McAdams who are second and third respectively. Angelina Jolie, who is the highest paid actress, didn't even make the top 10 and Jennifer Aniston, who has the second biggest paycheck is number six. Naomi often chooses indie films, but there are still movies like King Kong to boost her box office numbers. So tell us - are you surprised that Naomi Watts is the "most bankable" actress in Hollywood? View 5 Photos › Are You Surprised Naomi Is the "Most Bankable" Actress in Hollywood? Yes - Naomi is great, but I figured it would be someone like Angelina or Jennifer. »

Naomi Watts Named Most Bankable Actress

8 October 2009 12:15 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

And the best investment for your leading lady dollar is...Naomi Watts? Well, there's irony. Her best friend, Nicole Kidman, has been ranked by Forbes as the biggest loser in terms of box office returns, but Watts was recently crowned by the magazine as the actress who affords studios the greatest Roi.

For every dollar Watts is paid, her past three films have grossed $44. The rules are that the actresses must have starred in at least three movies in the past five years that opened in at least 500 theaters. Therefore, King Kong and Eastern Promises make up for The Painted Veil and The International, which weren't profitable at all.

Forbes says, not surprisingly, that Watts works cheap. Given her talent, I'd say that's true. She has one Oscar nomination already (21 Grams), and has been very good over the years, even when the movies are only so-so.

Most Profitable Star: Naomi Watts

7 October 2009 5:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In this time of economic uncertainty and the potential evaporating of the old, reliable Hollywood star system, some math nerds may have saved the jobs of ten lucky actresses. Forbes Magazine has recently completed its annual list of female stars that provide the most bang for the buck. Their poll process is pretty complex. To qualify, actors must have appeared in at least three movies over the past five years that opened on 500 screens or more. Someone then adds up and averages the actors' salary on each film, each film's budget and each film's final gross. This year's winner: Naomi Watts, who earned $44 for each $1 she was paid. Despite starring in interesting movies like The Painted Veil, Funny Games and Eastern Promises, it looks as if Watts' place on the list was snagged mostly by King Kong, which earned $550 million worldwide.

Forbes' Top-Value Actress? Naomi Watts!

By Lisa Horowitz

Producers, take note: To get the biggest box office bang for your production buck, hire Naomi Watts.

That's what Forbes magazine says, in its study of return-on-investment for Hollywood actresses.

Watts represents the perfect combination of an actress who earns relatively small paychecks, by Hollywood standards, and stars in some major hits, such as 2005's “King Kong,” which earned $550 million at the worldwide box office.

Brody Becomes an Action Hero in Predator Reboot

7 October 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Remember Adrien Brody? He’s the chap who played Wladyslaw Szpilman in the Pianist for which he won an Oscar. The Pianist is up there as one of my all-time favourite movies. He has also appeared in The Village and King Kong. This news today has surprised me a bit since it’s so different to the roles he normally plays.

Variety are reporting that Brody wants to reinvent himself as an action hero and has signed up for the lead role in ‘Predators’, the prequel to the movie made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987.

Variety: Brody and his Paradigm reps lobbied hard for the role. Fox has high hopes to spring a new franchise, and Brody has signed options to return for future installments, sources said.

I have no doubt he’ll do well in the role as every other film I’ve seen him in, he’s excelled in. »

Adrien Brody Joins Predators

7 October 2009 6:18 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

The infamous space Rastafarian will soon be setting his three red dot sights not only upon Danny Trejo, but also upon Adrien Brody (King Kong) and Topher Grace (Spiderman 3).

That’s right, director Nimrod Antal’s Predators, scripted and produced by Robert Rodriguez for Troublemaker Studios, seems to have gone off the deep end as far as casting decisions go — alongside Trejo, Brody, and Grace, we’ll also have Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, I Am Legend’s Alice Braga and the Ufc’s Oleg Taktarov.

The film will deal with a group of manly warriors (of which Brody is inexplicably a part) as they fight off a group of Predators, while the plot is thickened by Grace’s role as “an accountant-type whose unassuming facade masks a dangerous serial killer.”

This is definitely shaping up to be a project more akin to Rodriguez’s catalog than anything we’re familiar with in the past Predator series. »

Adrien Brody Joins Predators

7 October 2009 12:11 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Well nobody saw this coming. The star of Nimrod Antal's Predators is not a Rock or a Vin or an undiscovered new Arnie. It's the willowy Adrien Brody. Who would've thunk it?We have, of course, seen Brody hacking through the jungle before, as Jack Driscoll in Peter Jackson's King Kong. But he's still best known for dramatic roles in films like Polanski's The Pianist, or quirky indie fare like Hollywoodland and The Darjeeling Ltd.He's clearly looking to add some more mainstream strings to his bow however, since Brody and his agents apparently lobbied hard to get the role of "a heroic mercenary who battles to keep his team alive when its members are hunted by the aliens". Is "heroic mercenary" an oxymoron? Discuss. That team also includes Danny Trejo, Alice Braga (I Am Legend), Walton Goggins (Detective Vendrell from The Shield), Ultimate Fighter Oleg Taktarov, and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, »

Lowboy vs. Lost Boy: The Novel and Daniel Johnston

John Wray’s latest novel, Lowboy (Farrar, Straus & Giroux), released in March of this year, concerns a 16-year-old schizophrenic named Will Heller, just out of Bellavista psychiatric hospital (read Bellevue), off his meds and with a history of violence, who rides the subways beneath Manhattan trying to save the world from imminent global apocalypse by eluding capture and successfully losing his virginity.  This thriller engine— Doa meets Shock Corridor —Wray says he took from an Australian news clipping.  But knowing that he traveled to Austin, Texas in the mid-’90s, where he met the schizophrenic singer-songwriter and artist Daniel Johnston— whom he calls “the single most creative individual I’ve met”— it’s tempting to imagine the two connected, at least within the Cuisinart of the creative process.  As detailed in Jeff Feuerzeig’s acclaimed 2006 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston, Johnston even had his own lost week in New »
