I wasn't quite sure how to properly word the headline for this post considering I want to make sure you understand I am talking about the season pretty much running from Thanksgiving to Christmas, but I also want to make sure you know the film itself doesn't have to necessarily be about the holidays.
Take Die Hard for instance, it's set during Christmas time, but it isn't a Christmas film. However, it fits in with what I am looking for here. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Eyes Wide Shut, Fanny and Alexander, Batman Returns, Gremlins, The Thin Man and When Harry Met Sally are other examples. Hell, I would even say Rocky IV and Lethal Weapon count. As a matter of fact, I would say the non-Christmas, Christmas movies are the more interesting additions. How about The Shining or even Psycho?
Then, of course, I personally love films such as Love, »

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Send it to aftereltonflyingmonkey@yahoo.com! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
A Note from the Flying Monkey: Of the many emails I receive every week for my column, some are so good that they simply can’t be answered in just a few words. So from time to time, the editors have decided to let me out of the “cage” of that regular column, in a feature we’re calling Monkey Uncaged!
Q: What, in your opinion, is the worst gay film ever made? Why? – A.R.
A: A couple of months ago, I wrote a list of what I considered to be the ten most “important” gay male films – not what I felt were the “best,” mind you, but the ones that I felt had had the most impact either on the Glbt community or society at large. »

Opening this Friday, in limited release, is the new film from director Jane Campion “Bright Star”. The film premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and it’s a portrait of love and loss between the 19th-century Romantic poet John Keats and the 18-year-old muse-next-door, Fanny Brawne. They’re played by Ben Whishaw and Abbie Cornish. To help promote the film, we’ve been provided with 4 clips and they’re after the jump. Take a look.
Here’s the full synopsis:
Bright Star, one of the most highly praised films at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, is a portrait of love and loss between the 19th-century Romantic poet John Keats and the 18-year-old muse-next-door, Fanny Brawne. The film’s title comes from a love poem for Brawne, which Keats wrote in the flyleaf of his copy of the works of Shakespeare. Jane Campion’s return to the big »

Due to the ability to fast-forward through commercials, I just saw my first TV spot for the Jennifer Aniston-Aaron Eckhart dramedy Love Happens last night. I swear it made it look like it was a romantic comedy about Jennifer Aniston's character being unlucky in love. My alarm went off because there's No Way a movie could have that simple of a plot. So I came in today and found the full trailer online: I was right! Aaron Eckhart is a widower who channels his loss into a career as a self-help author, and it turns out he's just as emotionally scrambled. Great idea for a film. But something you may want to know if you've, say, recently lost your spouse. Ever since I went to see The Family Stone as an escape when my father was going through chemotherapy — because the trailer neglected to mention that a »

All About Steve opens this weekend across the country. The title is a play on words of the classic 1950 film, All About Eve. In the movie's honor, I've assembled a timeline of movies that showcase lead characters names in the titles in both odd and clever pun-driven ways. Some of these may have been obvious to you, other puns might be so bad that you'll only realize them now. (500) Days of Summer (2009) Get Smart (2008) Invincible (2006) The Family Stone (2005) King's Ransom (2005) Raising Helen (2004) Deliver Us From Eva (2003) Ginger Snaps (2000) Me, Myself & Irene (2000) Wild Wild West (1999) Zero Effect (1998) Good Will Hunting (1997) Gross Pointe Blank (1997) Barb Wire (1996) Major Payne (1995) Cops and Robbersons (1994) Poison Ivy (1992) The War of the Roses (1989) For Pete's Sake... »

The other day I watched My Life in Ruins out of curiosity and because I was bored. In the past, I've been quite cynical about the movie and Nia Vardalos's upcoming film I Hate Valentine's Day, but when all was said and done, I was a captive audience. And you know what? I like Nia Vardalos. I want to root for her. But it was in spite of myself that not only did I like it... I cried. Yes, despite the hackneyed plot - woman uproots her life, is cranky and miserable and loveless, then gets her groove back, along with a hunky fellow; despite the use of every possible ethnic and sexual stereotype possible; despite a love interest whose name is Poupi Kakas; and despite the complete lack of innovation in terms of the romantic comedy genre.... I liked it. And I cried. And I was very embarrassed. »

We won't have a complete box office report until tomorrow, but The Time Traveler's Wife made a tidy $7.7 million yesterday, and if predictions are to be believed, the movie will keep holding its own just fine at the cineplex this weekend, serving as a perfect slice of counter programming against this week's sci-fi sensation, District 9. The big-screen adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's best-selling novel is shaping up to be Rachel McAdams' first hit since 2005's The Family Stone, which is a decent feat, considering the reviews have ranged from lukewarm enjoyment to outright befuddlement. I'm with the critics on this one. Having read Niffenegger's book, I went into the movie hoping to experience some real, hot-and-bothered romantic swooning. We're talking about McAdams and Eric Bana here, actors with the potential to push the smokin' quotient off the charts! But the movie just sort of bumps along without the »

The Time Traveler’s Wife
Directed by: Robert Schwentke
Cast: Eric Bana, Rachel McAdams, Ron Livingston, Stephen Tobolowsky
Running Time: 1 hr 48 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: August 14, 2009
Plot: Henry (Bana) is a Chicago librarian and a genetic anomaly that causes him to involuntarily time travel. He manages to fall in love with Clare (McAdams) through a complicated series of events that only proves more difficult once the two are together.
Who’s It For? It’s kind of got a little of everything for a date movie. Guys get a new twist on time travel. Women get a romance. Kids might get bored.
Expectations: Everyone seems to love the book. I haven’t read it, but I’m a fan of Bana and I used to be a fan of McAdams who seems to have been in a slump of forgettable roles lately with The Lucky Ones and The Family Stone. »

Directed by: Anne Fletcher
Cast: Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, Betty White, Malin Akerman
Running Time: 1 hr 44 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: June 19, 2009
Plot: Margaret (Bullock) is going to get deported back to Canada, that is until she comes up with an idea … marry her assistant (Reynolds). Now the two are off to Alaska to meet his family, to try and prove this is a real engagement and they’re very much in love. What could go wrong? Answer: many things.
Who’s It For? If you are blinded by the romantic comedy genre then line up, but the film depends a little too much on awkward situations revolving around Bullock, than any sort of romantic connection between the two leads.
Expectations: At this stage, I like Reynolds more than Bullock and the only thing I’m nervous about is that Bullock will come »

Vanity Fair briefly killed my enthusiasm for the "Hollywood project" when they nixed the traditional cover for 2009. But time heals most wounds and I have reanimated the project's corpse. 2004's cover had 13 already peaking actresses on it. How'd they follow it in 2005? With another batch of goddesses, 60% of whom had already graced their "Hollywood" cover. In the case of the C/Kates, it was now thrice. Was Vanity Fair running out of ideas? Given the idiosyncratic pool the covers regularly pulled from you'd think there were only 40 actresses in Hollywood... but then, it's probably all in who you know who represents you when it comes to face time here. It's definitely not only about the fame. Consider this: this cover series lasted from 1995 - 2008 and Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Michelle Williams and Tilda Swinton never appeared on them (just four chronologically appropriate examples off the »

Dermot Mulroney-- you remember that guy, right? Y'know, he was the date in The Wedding Date, the brother who wasn't Luke Wilson or the gay deaf one in The Family Stone, and some guy named Gavin on Friends. Ok, so maybe you saw none of these movies, and never knew this guy existed. Mulroney has a plan for that! Namely, he's going to become a director, meaning that he can either set himself free from the middling movies he's starred in, or make one of his own. He'll step behind the director's chair for Keep It Together, a comedy-drama about a young marriage counselor who based everything she knew on her parents' happy marriage, until she discovers that Mom (Blythe Danner) and Dad (Christopher Walken) are getting a divorce. THR writes that producers are still casting the young female lead, who could conceivably be as old as Danner's real-life »

Welcome to The Shelf Talker, a regular rundown of news, gossip and recommendations from and about authors on book tour. Ben Greenman is an editor at the New Yorker with the same name as about 19 guys Tst sat next to in hebrew school. However, none of them wrote a lauded novel about a forgotten 60s funk band with a cover that borrows from Peter Max, "Hair", and the Wednesday night sleepwalkings of half of The Family Stone. Instead, at least one made a bonanza selling his father's floppy disk plant, retired somewhere and hasn't stopped laughing. I should look him up. Anyway, in Please Step Back, Mr. Greenman recounts the short career of Rock Foxx with a journalistic straight face. "A novel" remains emblazoned on the cover. Stomp The Yard actor Brian White (pictured inside) has nabbed a role in the Joss Whedon-Drew Goddard horror collaboration The Cabin In The Woods, which is currently filming in Vancouver. Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford topline the MGM thriller, about which almost nothing is known but its release date: February 5, 2010. White will play a character named Truman alongside Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams and Chris Hemsworth. Much like Cloverfield, which Goddard scripted, the Cabin story line provides a new twist on a classic scenario -- in this case the young-people-stranded-in-the-woods horror trope. He appeared in the features Brick, The Game Plan and The Family Stone. »
