"Dead and Breakfast" begins on a dark evening with a group of friends who are on their way to a wedding in a Winnebago. The group consists of some very assorted characters, from a macho tough guy, a nerd, an animal-loving vegetarian (who can speak many languages), a snobby girl, and others. The gang gets lost and ends up in the small town of Lovelock, where they spend the night at a Victorian bed-and-breakfast. But in the middle of the night, the chef of the the B&B is murdered, and the owner has a heart attack. The next day, the kids are held in town for questioning and aren't allowed to leave. But as the evening falls in the small town, a strange black-magic ritual begins turning the entire town into blood-thirsty zombies that begin to corner them into the bed and breakfast.
I have mixed feelings about this movie, and I'm not really sure whether I really like it or really just don't care for it. I liked the storyline for the movie, and while it was a little silly, it wasn't quite like anything I've heard before, so I'll give it that. While it is a horror film that concerns zombies, this film is also very funny at the same time. There are plenty of jokes and gags throughout it, the humor is very apparent and was successful in getting a few laughs out of me - I really liked the musical zombie dance that occurred. The actors in this film are fairly recognizable, including Gina Phillips ("Jeepers Creepers"), Jeremy Sisto ("May"), Portia de Rossi ("Cursed"), and David Carradine, along with his real-life daughter, Ever, who is basically our leading role. My two favorites of the bunch would have to be Phillips and Sisto, and while they aren't given a lot to work with, they're performances were good as usual. I can't say the rest of the cast was bad, but I particularly liked those two.
During the 45 minute mark the zombies begin rolling on into the film, which provides some pretty graphic violence as the kids kill them off with their home made shotguns and chainsaws. I can see why the film was deemed "unrated", because the gore is pretty nasty. The references to films like "Night of the Living Dead" are endless, and this film really reminded me of a US version of the British splatter comedy "Shaun of the Dead", which was essentially a parody of zombie movies - although "Dead and Breakfast" wasn't quite as good, a nice attempt though.
Bottom line - "Dead and Breakfast" is a campy, low-budget little splatter horror/comedy that isn't a complete waste of ninety minutes. It's not great and it has some flaws, but it was overall entertaining enough. Just don't expect anything too mindblowing. 5/10.
