“‘The Princess and the Frog’ is a return to the timeless world of hand-drawn animation at Disney. It’s an ageless fairy tale, but with a fresh twist that combines everything we look for in great stories: comedy, adventure, music-and most of all, the kind of heart that always sets Disney animation apart.”
~ John Lasseter, Executive Producer and Chief Creative Officer, Walt Disney Animation Studios
Opening on November 25th, in limited release, is Walt Disney’s return to 2D animation, The Princess and the Frog. After years of focusing on computer animation, The House That Walt Built is returning to its roots and I couldn’t be more excited. While I don’t know if The Princess and the Frog is going to be a classic like Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast, I know there is a place for traditional animation alongside what Pixar does so brilliantly with computers. »

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Yesterday, I saw a lot of people calling for Jamie Foxx's Oscar to be revoked following the announcement that he and Martin Lawrence are confirmed for "Sheneneh and Wanda," a comedy in which the duo will play female bank robbers. Both roles are based on earlier cross-dressed characters from the actors' TV days (Lawrence's Sheneneh is from "Martin" and Foxx's Wanda is from "In Living Color"). Foxx, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2004 for "Ray" (he was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor that same year for "Collateral), returning to this drag shtick seems like a huge step backward to a lot of people.
"Seems" is the key word here, though, because it doesn't have to be a regression. Plenty of Oscar-caliber actors have cross-dressed before and since being nominated and/or winning an Academy Award, and plenty of performers have won for dressing like the opposite sex. »

Do you remember when Martin Lawrence was funny? Neither do I.
Do you remember when he was talented? Trick question.
Do you remember when Jamie Foxx had a supremely promising career track? Yes, I do.
And that’s why the news of Foxx and Lawrence being paired together in the comedy vehicle Sheneneh and Wanda is so frustrating to me. I look at Foxx and I think of his great turn in Collateral and Ray, and just weep for his future. He’s dropped off the face of the earth, only to resurface this way?
Apparently, Sheneneh and Wanda are female comic characters that the duo played in their old days, and they’re making a comeback. Foxx is writing the script for the film himself, with Lawrence producing. According to Variety, “the project originated as a parody of a movie trailer for a film called “Skank Robbers,” which Foxx »

Most of Disney's animations are famed for their everlasting songs, and with "The Princess and the Frog" fast approaching its theatrical release, the mouse house prepares a special featurette highlighting on the music of the new animation. The featurette provides sneak peek at some of the songs listed in the soundtrack with guidance from star Anika Noni Rose.
In the promo video, Rose first talked about her character Tiana and her other favorite character from the film, the lovesick Cajun firefly named Ray. As she discussed about the music, Keith David's track "Friends on the Other Side" and Jenifer Lewis' "Dig a Little Deeper" get a brief preview. The actress later went on explaining what makes her "Almost There" song a unique one.
To arrive in U.S. stores on November 23, the soundtrack of "The Princess and the Frog" consists of 10 original songs and 7 original scores. Most of »

There was no better place to spend part of a Halloween afternoon than in the basement room of the Nature Lab at Risd, a wonderful collection of flora and fauna specimens--most dead, some alive--made available for study at the Rhode Island School of Design. And in its corner stands a true cabinet of curiosities...an old library card catalog named Tiny Town.
Tiny Town is organized and filled with teeny samples, all kept in identical plastic boxes. There's one drawer just for spider parts, and another for minerals (including a box of ashes from Mount St. Helens). The categories are broad--Animalia:Insects may have anything from a dried beetle to unidentified long limbs. Glass slides that show cross sections of an eyeball or heart muscle can be viewed under a microscope. Little handwritten and manually typed labels meticulously catalogue each specimen, many of which date back decades.

The successful biopic is something that takes a truly masterful hand to accomplish. A lifetime, like history itself, contains no inherent narrative—no arc or three-act structure—yet, like in studying history, we narratavize the exceptional human life in order to better understand it. In biopics this involves a lot of condensing, creative liberties, and difficult executive decision, requiring delicate filmmakers to execute properly and convincingly. Biopic is also sometimes an elusive definition, as not every movie based on a true story should be considered a biopic of its lead character, and it’s often difficult to distinguish the two. Capote, for instance, despite the title, is hardly a biopic of Truman Capote, but specifically portrays the writing of In Cold Blood. Yet one could argue that it is a biopic because it covers one of the most significant, or at least the most notorious, event in that author’s life, and »

Let's hear it for Milla Jovovich, who did a damn fine job guest-judging on last night's Project Runway. The model-turned-actress-turned-designer displayed a keen knowledge of fashion and had chutzpah to spare. Which means the person who's guest-critiquing next week has a mighty unenviable task. I'm about to tell you who that person is, so if you're averse to anything resembling a spoiler, now would be a good time to skip on ahead to the comments section. But if you have working eyeballs, you probably already figured out that it's Kerry Washington. (Sorry, gotta have a photo!) Will the actress (of »

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories »

Oscar winner Jamie Foxx has fuelled rumours he's romancing actress Kirstie Alley, after confessing he has a crush on the former Cheers star.
Alley started the gossip by posting a series of saucy messages on her Twitter.com blog in recent weeks, hinting at a fling with the Ray star.
In one, she alludes to a leaked nude photo of the actor, writing, "I don't need to see Mr. Foxx's naked picture. I see him naked three times a week... standing over me."
Foxx was grilled on the rumours during an appearance on Conan O'Brien's U.S. talk show on Monday night, and he refused to deny he's dating the 58 year old.
The actor/rapper said, "I used to have a crush on Kirstey Alley back in the day. I don't see anything wrong with it." »

The Internet is killing Jamie Foxx's stand-up comedy career - because every time he pokes fun at a fellow celebrity, it appears online.
The funnyman-turned-r&B singer admits he's constantly having to send "gift baskets" to stars after comments he makes about them during comedy routines in clubs are written as straight remarks on blogs, tweets and websites.
He says, "I've read things about me on the Internet and I'm like, 'What?' Now all of a sudden a certain amount of people believe that's what you are.
"If I'm in this club doing jokes designed for the club and somebody tweets it and it says, 'He says that so and so is an a**hole,' the people that are reading that aren't in the club, so it's a tough thing to protect your art and still be out there."
Foxx has started using his weekly satellite radio show, Foxxhole on Sirius, as a place where he can explain jokes that become remarks online: "We have to explain a joke or send a gift basket. It gets to the point where you just want to kick everybody in the balls with some steel-toed boots and say, 'It's comedy!' Is it getting to the point where I have to apologise for jokes."
The Ray star recently got into trouble with the Cyrus family after suggesting 16-year-old pop star Miley should "make a sex tape... do some heroin... and become a lesbian" as part of a joke on his radio show. Foxx has since apologised for the crude joke. »

On the music front, Drake is having a pretty stellar 2009 — so much so that MTV's Hip-Hop Brain Trust just named him this year's third-hottest Mc. But Drake got his start as an actor, appearing for years as star athlete Jimmy Brooks in "Degrassi: The Next Generation," and progress in this aspect of his career has been slow lately. The 22-year-old is planning to rectify that situation in the future with a move to the big screen.
"I'm working on that right now," Drake told Billboard.com. "One of my best friends in this industry is Jamie Foxx ... so hopefully we'll get to do a movie together."
At the moment, Foxx is filming Todd Phillips' follow-up to "The Hangover," a road comedy called "Due Date," co-starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis. »

The Oscar-winning actor has revealed that he is reteaming with Ray director Taylor Hackford for a film about the controversial boxer. Foxx told MTV: "Mike Tyson, heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Taylor Hackford, who also directed the Ray Charles biopic, I think is my man. We have a certain kinship, and we've talked about when we do get back together what it would be like. I think, for something like this, it would be great because everybody remembers that era. Let’s bow our heads for a moment of silence. As we learned last night, NBC snuffed out one of our favorite procedurals, the gritty, fantastically acted Southland. You’d think shoving Jay Leno down our throats for five hours of primetime would be injury enough, but no—they had to add insult. This, NBC. This is why TV viewers are dropping network for cable in ever-greater numbers. Viewers know cable offers the kind of risky, investment-heavy programming that’s rare on network television these days, and what’s better, cable will actually stick with it. Take a show like Mad Men. »

Thirty Republican senators voted down an amendment by Al Franken to take away government funds from defense contractors who prevent their employees from pursuing legal action for workplace assault or sexual discrimination, but luckily it passed anyway.

After Ray Charles, Jamie Foxx is hoping to play controversial boxing champion Mike Tyson, again under the direction of Taylor Hackfor. In 2005, Jamie Foxx was awarded a Best Actor Oscar for his performance as the famous visually-impaired pianist and singer in the eponymous biopic "Ray". Mike Tyson, who appeared in the hilarious comedy "Very Bad Trip" as himself, recently declared he'd be happy to see his life adapted into a film, as long as Jamie Foxx took the lead. »

Here it is... Colin J's review of Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell on Blu-Ray!
As a break between Spider-Man movies, director Sam Raimi returned to his roots in over-the-top horror with 2009's Drag Me to Hell. In this throwback to Raimi's Evil Dead days, we start with a prologue set in 1969. A Mexican boy (Shiloh Selassie) steals a necklace from a gypsy woman. Bad move - she puts a curse on him and he ends up sucked into hell.
From there we leap to modern times and meet Christine Brown (Alison Lohman), a young woman who strives to get ahead. She takes diction lessons to eradicate an accent, and she aims to get the assistant manager position at the bank where she works. Christine feels pressure to improve because the mother of her boyfriend Clayton Dalton (Justin Long) wants him to be with someone in his social circle, »

Jamie Foxx will always have a knack for the funny, as we see in his Mike Tyson impression at the top of the below video. He's completely serious about what his plans are for the headline-grabbing boxer however. Foxx plans to do with Tyson what he previously did with singer Ray Charles in "Ray," which is to say give movie-going audiences a new perspective on a public figure who is equal parts famous and infamous.
What's more, Foxx revealed exclusively to MTV News that he's bringing more than just his acting chops over from "Ray," a performance which netted the actor his first Academy Award. "Taylor Hackford, who also directed [the] Ray Charles [biopic], I think is my man [to direct the Tyson biopic]. We have a certain kinship, and we've talked about when we do get back together what it would be like."
That kinship can be credited, at least in part, for Foxx's Oscar win. »
