Clive Owen Gets Back
By
Clive Owen is one of those actors that keep surprising you. Just when you think the audience, and the Hollywood establishment, has pegged him as an action hero, a leading man, or a romantic comedy pin-up, Owen pulls an about-face and does something unexpected.
It all started October 3, 1964 in Coventry, England. Owen’s father, a country music singer, abandoned the family when he was just three. His mother later remarried, with Clive and his four brothers raised by his mother and stepfather, who worked for British Rail. Owen has characterized those early years as "rough." A self-described “solidly working class” kid, Owen was bitten by the acting bug at age 13 and followed his dream to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art several years later. Initially cutting his teeth on high-profile British television programs such as “Chancer” and “Sharman,” as well as art house »

Comic writer extraordinaire Warren Ellis must be a hot thing in Hollywood at the moment because yet another comic of his has been optioned for a film, and this time it's Black Summer, an 8 issue mini series he wrote for Avatar Comics that ran from May 2007 to July 2008. Pre-production has already started on an adaptation of Red starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and now Helen Mirren, his comics Ocean and Gravel (as previously reported) are currently in development, he's writing a King Arthur-type film script and he's also writing an anime series for Marvel starring Wolverine and another with Iron Man. And now yesterday Variety reported that Vigilante Entertainment has optioned his Black Summer series with Ryne Pearson (Knowing) adapting. »

Comics legend Warren Ellis is all over Hollywood these days. He has Red in development at Summit, Gravel was just recently optioned by the top-notch crew at Legendary Pictures, and Ocean is in the works with Hollywood Gang, for whom Ellis is also penning a King Arthur script. Now Variety reports that Ellis' miniseries Black Summer has been optioned by the fledgling banner Vigilante Entertainment. Ryne Pearson is set to adapt it for the big screen.
Black Summer kicked off in 2007, and walks some familiar Watchmen ground as it examines the darker implications of vigilante heroes. It centers around a superhero team called the Seven Guns, a group of ordinary humans who have willingly undergone severe surgery to become superhuman vigilantes. They take to the streets of a West Coast city to battle a corrupt city government, its equally sleazy police force, and greedy private security forces. But by the time we meet them, »

More Set Photos from Ridley Scott’s still untitled Robin Hood flick (although it looks like it will probably just be called “Robin Hood”) have surfaced online and as you can see from these images it still looks like a “Robin Hood” movie. In a recent interview on Australian television, Crowe said that the 1991 Kevin Costner film, “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” was “like watching an extended Jon Bon Jovi video clip.” I find that statement funny because I look at the costumes and locations for this movie and I feel like I’ve saw this upcoming Ridley Scott version back in 1991 when it was called “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”. Hit the jump to see the set photos and why I think Scott’s “Robin Hood” won’t work.
Scott’s film will supposedly be a “realistic” take on the Robin Hood myth and that makes me even more uninterested in the movie. »

Even though it's made $100 million in the rest of the world and is based on a global bestseller, it took months for Swedish murder mystery "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" to find a U.S. distributor. The film was finally picked up earlier this month by Music Box Films, known for previously saving the French crowdpleaser "Tell No One" after other distributors passed in fear of poor returns.
In America, with few exceptions, the fact that a film is subtitled means it's destined for the arthouse. Populist entertainment -- action, romantic comedies, thrillers -- has struggled to find a place and an audience. Like most blockbusters, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" is guaranteed a sequel -- it's adapted from the first installment of the "Millenium" trilogy, written before author Stieg Larsson passed away in 2004. As Anne Thompson reported, the only reason an American remake hasn't been set into »

Writer Warren Ellis' comic series Gravel, published by Avatar Press, is becoming a film from Legendary Pictures.
The occult series features the character of William Gravel, a soldier in England's special forces S.A.S., who uses magic.
Ellis, who is writing the script and will be an executive producer, already has a number of film projects in development, including Red, Ocean and an untitled King Arthur project. »

Following the recent news that he's working on a not-Excalibur King Arthur film, Variety reports this morning that comics doyen Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Iron Man: Extremis) is also set to script a version of his own Gravel series, for Legendary Pictures.Gravel began life as a sporadically released limited comic series published by Avatar Press, co-created by Ellis and Mike Wolfer. Recently it's become a regular monthly title, with Wolfer at the reigns on his own. It involves "combat magician" William Gravel, a British Sas soldier who specialises in magic as it applies to war (he'd have been useful to The Men Who Stare At Goats) and occasionally moonlights as a mercenary (for a bit of extra cash) on X-Files style gigs that require supernatural solutions.Potential for a sort of Constantine-meets-Black Hawk Down then, although one significant plot strand saw Gravel back on home-turf after a stint in Afghanistan, »

Update: The IMDb page has been changed back to simply “Warcraft.” I received no response after contacting Blizzard’s PR department. I left the unbridled rumor and speculation below.
Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have updated the IMDb page for the upcoming live-action Warcraft movie. The title now reads Warcraft: The Rise of the Lich King and a tentative release of 2011 (likely during the summer). As announced in July, Sam Raimi will be directing the feature film based on the 15-year-old video game franchise.
Right away the subtitle is an obvious reference to the most recent World of Warcraft expansion released in November 2008 titled “Wrath of the Lich King.” It was (and still is) the fastest selling computer game of all time, setting the record at 2.8 million copies in the first 24 hours.
Speculation has begun that it could also be linked to the best-selling Christie Golden novel bearing the same subtitle. »

Swedish-born Stellan Skarsgård (Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3, Angels & Demons) has been added to the cast of Marvel Studios’ Thor film.
Skarsgård joins Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Jaimie Alexander (Sif), Colm Feore and Brian Blessed (Odin).
The actor says he cannot reveal who he’s playing in the film, as with Colm Feore whom we only know will be playing some sort of villain.
The 58 year old actor was initially asked to join the Thor cast without being given a chance to read the script. This was due to Marvel’s efforts to keep plot details secure and secret but that wouldn’t work for Skarsgård.
“They wanted me to sign without reading the script. That I refused to do. Then they sent one to me that was so coded that I could only print one copy.”

Though Alexander Skarsgard may have lost out on Thor to Chris Hemsworth, his father, actor Stellan Skarsgard has managed to make it onto director Kenneth Branagh’s call sheet according to sources.
While the actor’s exact role remains a mystery, he has told Swedish site, Ystads Allehanda a little about the circumstances of his casting:
“They wanted me to sign [a contract] without reading the script. That I refused to do. Then they sent one to me that was so coded that I could only print one copy.”
Stellen has a history of playing mythological characters, the 58 year old starred in 2004’s King Arthur as Saxon leader Cerdic, 2005’s Beowulf as Danish king Hrothgar and he also featured as “Bootstrap” Bill in the Pirates of the Caribbean series.
Very little is known about the plot at present, but it’s believed that the movie will follow comic book canon and see »

Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard has been cast in Marvel's big-screen adaptation of Thor.
Ironically, his son Alexander Skarsgard - who plays a 1,000-year-old Viking vampire in TV series True Blood - was among the final candidates for Thor's title role, losing out to Star Trek actor Chris Hemsworth.
Stellan, 58, certainly has some previous mythological/historical credits, having played Cerdic (pictured above), leader of the invading Saxons in 2004's King Arthur, starring Clive Owen; and the Danish king Hrothgar in 2005's Beowulf and Grendel.
He was also the barnacle-encrusted Bootstrap Bill in the last two Pirates of the Caribbean films and was more recently in Angels & Demons.
So what role might Stellan be playing in Thor?
The news that he has been cast in Thor came via the Swedish site Ystads Allehanda. But, unfortunately, it says Stellan cannot reveal the role he is playing.
It quotes him as saying: "They »

Comic book readers love controversy, and so did creators on Twitter Wednesday night. Tweets showed up all night mourning the death of Twitter user @Hobodarkseid, who was outed in an NPR blog post as being none other than writer Matt Fraction.
Elsewhere, a few creators took issue with claims made my Tyrese Gibson in a CNN article about inventing digital comics for iTunes. Brian Michael Bendis and Christian Beranek both weighed in on that one. On lighter notes, Jon Favreau and Stan Lee are both jazzed about "Iron Man 2," and Stan Lee believes he may outshine Robert Downey Jr.
All of those insights and more can be found below in the Twitter Report for October 1, 2009.
@Jerwa So, @Hobodarkseid is actually Matt Fraction. Well played, sir.

A big change of pace for this project. Aaron Guzikowski's Prisoners started gaining buzz back in March when Mark Wahlberg was first attached. The script has been compared to Silence of the Lambs and Se7en and was one of the hottest scripts in town over the summer. The Risky Biz Blog reports today that Prisoners eventually sold to Alcon Entertainment instead of being setup at a studio. The producers reconfigured the project without a cast or director and a lower budget (around $30 to $40 million) so it could move forward quickly. Now they've brought on Training Day, King Arthur, and Shooter director Antoine Fuqua. Fuqua, who last directed Brooklyn's Finest, is currently in negotiations to direct Prisoners. The project is being fast-tracked, with pre-production set to begin shortly for a January or February shoot. Alcon is planning to release the film through Warner Brothers next October. It sounds like »

Ever since I saw Croupier while visiting London with my folks years ago, Clive Owen has been one of my very favorite actors. No one does that British brooding thing quite like he does (see: Gosford Park, Closer, Inside Man), and when he's bad-ass (i.e. King Arthur, Children of Men, Shoot 'Em Up), he's thrilling. But in his latest movie The Boys Are Back (directed by Shine's Scott Hicks), Owen sheds that stoic persona to play Joe Warr, a father of two sons who, following the death of his second wife, is faced with raising both of them on his own. »
