FAIRY TALE
Aspect ratio: 1.37:1
Sound format: Mono
(Short film)
A young city guy (Terrance Flynn) takes his long-term partner (Eric M. Cole) home to meet his parents, but Flynn's mother (Paula Roth) is unable to accept their relationship, leading to an act of rebellion which threatens to tear the lovers apart...
Using "Little Red Riding Hood" as its base motif - specifically the fairy-tale's implicit warning against deviation from established procedure - David Kittredge's dramatic short explores the conflicting allegiances which can undermine even the most loving partnership. Beautifully photographed on location in Massachusetts, the film casts its Big City protagonists into an alien environment where their relationship falls prey to unexpected pressures. Unable to defy his bigoted parents, Flynn retreats from Cole and heads into the woods where he stumbles on an old cruising ground and makes whoopee with an anonymous stud (Robert Reinhart).
Flynn and Cole are entirely convincing as the happy couple whose lives are turned upside down, and Roth is magisterial as the narrow-minded parent whose objection to Flynn's sexuality appears rooted in selfish concerns over her son's inability to provide grandchildren (dad makes only a fleeting, wordless appearance). Kittredge keeps tight control of the material, bookending his film with fairy-tale elements which add complexity and magic to an already satisfying brew.
