The "Today Show" began on the Nine Network in June of 1982, hosted by Steve Liebmann and Sue Kelleway who had previously worked with Gordon Elliott on "Good Morning Australia" the year before on Network Ten.
As I recall, the newsreader at that time was Eric Walters and the weather was presented by Brian Bury.
Sue left the show around 1984-85 to be replaced by Patrice Newell, who was then replaced by Liz Hayes from National Nine News in 1986. In 1987, Steve left the "Today Show" but was replaced by George Negus, co-hosting the show with Liz Hayes.
Steve returned around 1990 and continued alongside Liz Hayes. Around this time (early 90's) Eric Walters also left the show and Ian Ross took over as newsreader. In 1991, Brian Bury left and was replaced by Monte Dwyer from (I think) Darwin, as weatherman.
In November 1996, after about 10 years, Liz Hayes moved over to "60 Minutes" as reporter and Tracy Grimshaw took her place. In the late 90's or early 2000's, Ian Ross "retired" from the "Today Show" only to turn up some time later on Network Seven, reading the nightly news. Ian was replaced by Sharyn Ghidella who for some time, had read the 6am-7am Early News bulletin for Nine.
Late 2001, early 2002 saw Monte Dwyer leave as weatherman, to be replaced by Sami Lukis. Steve Jacobs took over the weather in late 2004 and remains to this date.
Steve Liebmann retired from the show on 11/2/05 following a mild heart attack a couple of months prior. At this time, the show had been running from 6am-9am weekdays for a while however, starting on 14/2/05, another version of the Early News commenced hosted by Sharyn Ghidella and Chris Smith. The "Today Show" started at 7am, hosted by Karl Stefanovic and Tracy Grimshaw, with Leila Mckinnon as newsreader.
The Early News was short-lived and a few month's later the "Today Show" returned to it's 6am time slot, with Karl & Tracy as hosts, Sharyn on News and Steve Jacobs on the weather.
