Review: ‘Couples Retreat’ gets tag-teamed

9 October 2009 2:50 PM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Instead of a boring review from one of our crack reviewers, we decided to have Two crack reviewers do a boring review for Couples Retreat. It’s like you won the lottery but you got only got two movie nerds talking about a romantic comedy instead millions of dollars.

Your humble site chief, Erik (that’s me) is in regular font while Phillip Barrett, our DVD & Blu-Ray Editor is italicized.

It’s easy to pick on romantic comedies. They usually follow a fairly easy paint-by-numbers principle that involves personal worlds falling apart before they can be put back together again with pixie dust and a kiss. Usually everyone goes home happy and the story is wrapped up in a pretty bow. That’s what audiences will also find in the Peter Billingsley directed, Vince Vaughn co-written comedy Couples Retreat, to which I say, “So what?”

“So what?” sort of sums »

Jennifer Aniston To Undergo 'Really Intensive' Guitar Lessons For Upcoming Drama 'The Goree Girls'

14 September 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

She may have become a bit typecast over the last few years with lighthearted romances like “He’s Just Not That Into You,” “The Break-Up” and “Along Came Polly,” but one of the cool things about Jennifer Aniston is that the girl does have a neat little indie streak buried deep inside her. With flicks like “The Good Girl,” “The Iron Giant” and “Office Space,” she has the guts to lend her star power to something different and daring from time to time – and in an upcoming flick, it sounds like she might be singing that tune once again.

“I’m taking time off until January or February even and diving into my production company, Echo, with projects that we’re developing… ’Goree Girls’ is the one I’m most excited about,” explained the star, citing the name of a period drama she’s been developing for more than a year. »

DVD Review

I Love You, Man

Directed by: John Hamburg

Cast: Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Rashida Jones

Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins

Rating: R

Due Out: August 11, 2009

Plot: Now that Peter (Rudd) is engaged, he realizes he needs a best man. But he really doesn’t have any guy friends, so now he’s out searching, and along comes someone (Segel) who might be just right, even if his fiancee (Jones) doesn’t think so.

Who’s It For? Did you like Segel in Forgetting Sarah Marshall? Well that becomes secondary because this film is a Rudd lovefest. And he proves to be one of the more likeable guys in Hollywood.

Movie:

They don’t rush into it here and they give Rudd time to set up his character of Peter Klaven, plus there’s comedians from “Saturday Night Live,” Broken Lizard and MTV’s “The State” so we’re in good hands. »

L.A. Scene July '09: Dykeotomy, Outfest, and Parties

26 July 2009 10:34 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

L.A. Scene is a monthly column that chronicles lesbian nightlife and events of interest in Los Angeles. Sarah Witness, an East Coast transplant and obvious femme, has been navigating the snark infested waters of Hollywood since 2001. Although she's an Nyu trained actress, she prefers sipping vodka and making idle chit-chat at really gay nightclubs.

Dykeotomy I recently attended the Dykeotomy launch party at Here Lounge. What is Dykeotomy? Well that’s what I spent the majority of the party trying to figure out. The rest of the time I was in the bathroom line.

It seems that Dykeotomy is a concept, and this being Los Angeles, a concept is nothing if it is not a brand. It all began when Logan Alexander, of the Janice Dikinson Modeling Agency show, asked his very butch cousin if he could photograph her in extremely feminine clothing and make-up. She consented, and impressed with the results, »

I Love You, Man Review Directed by: John Hamburg Written by: Larry Levin, John Hamburg Starring: Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Rashida Jones, Jon Favreau, Andy Samberg, J.K. Simmons, Jaime Pressly, Lou Ferrigno Bromantic comedies are nothing new. Although they've been repackaged and renamed, the buddy comedy has been around for decades as an outlet to express the feelings that men have for each other but are too macho to say in real life. Judd Apatow didn't invent the idea, but he has found the sweet spot for balancing manly heartfelt moments with laughter, and presenting them in a way that attracts both male and female audiences. With John Hamburg's I Love You, Man, it would appear that the concept is being taken to its ultimate conclusion, by focusing on a man's quest to find a new best friend. The casting of Paul Rudd and Jason Segel also seemed ideal. »

Movie Review: I Love You, Man

Mar 20, 2009 It's not surprising that I Love You, Man comes from the mind of John Hamburg - the writer/director best known for authoring the screenplay for Meet the Parents (and its lesser sequel, Meet the Fockers) and for directing Along Came Polly - because the dominant impression one gets after leaving I Love You, Man is that Paul Rudd has become the new Ben Stiller. While Rudd has earned major comedy street cred over the past few years, alternating between projects with the Judd Apatow (Anchorman, Knocked Up) and the State (Wet Hot American Summer, ...Read more at MovieRetriever.com »

"I Love You, Man" reviewby Eric Sloss, Writer     In these depressing economic times, what a pleasure it is for a movie like “I Love You, Man” to premiere.  This will be the funniest movie of the year and possibly the funniest in several years.  Every thing works in this film.  It gets situations dead on and even makes tired gags seem original.  “I Love You, Man” will have you grinning from ear and ear.   Paul Rudd plays realtor Peter Klaven.  Early on he proposes to his girlfriend Zooey (Rashida Jones).  There is trouble brewing though.  Peter does not have any close male friends.  After hearing his fiancée talk with her girlfriends about his lack of friends, Peter sets out to do something about this dilemma.  His wedding is coming up and he does not have a best man.   His gay brother Robbie (Andy Samburg) and his father (J.K. Jason Segel and Paul Rudd in I Love You, Man

Photo: Paramount Pictures I Love You, Man operates within serious highs and lows. When this movie is funny it's really funny, but when the jokes aren't rolling it hits rock bottom. This isn't necessarily a problem for the first half of the film or so, but there comes a point where you hope it will get out of its funk and gain a bit of consistency, but it never does. It's an R-rated comedy directed by John Hamburg who found some success with Along Came Polly back in 2004, but I just can't be sure if I Love You, Man will follow suit despite the caliber of comedic stars and its harder edged comedic tone. I would say my biggest issue is with Paul Rudd who plays Peter Klaven, a man about to get married who has no real male friends »

The Fockers Will Be Back For More

19 March 2009 3:07 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The family of Fockers is coming back in full force in The Little Fockers, the upcoming second sequel to the hit comedy Meet the Parents, according to Entertainment Weekly. Comments made by John Hamburg, the screenwriter of the new film, suggest that all of the original cast will be returning.

"Everyone will be back," Hamburg is quoted as saying. "I can guarantee there will be more children and that conflict will ensue between De Niro and Stiller. Oh yeah, that's some scoop. Hot off the press!"

Meet the Parents was released in 2000. It starred Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner and Owen Wilson and was directed by Jay Roach. Roach followed it up in 2004 with Meet the Fockers, which also starred Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand.  The Little Fockers will focus on the children of Stiller and Polo’s characters.
