In the Us, most people know Tom Sturridge as Robert Pattinson.s best pal. He.s had small roles in Vanity Fair and Being Julia, but beyond being by his vampire buddy.s side in tabloid photos, is widely unknown. It.s time you get to know Tom a little better because it.s his turn to prevail on the big screen, as a pirate. Lucky for him, his godfather is Quentin (Bill Nighy), the owner of Radio Rock, the ship responsible for bringing millions in Britain the music the government restricts. Check out what Tom told me about getting his role, being naked in a bathroom with Nick Frost and his hopes to bring the play Punk Rock, for which he was just nominated for the Evening Standard Award »

Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they've picked up the Tiff hit Mother and Child starring Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, Samuel L Jackson and Kerry Washington. The Rodrigo García adoption drama prompted more than one pundit to declare that The Bening would most definitely be back in the Best Actress Oscar race. But the press release makes no promises about when Spc would be showing off their new bundle to the public.
Kerry Washington and Shady Naomi Watts work it out in San Sebastian, promoting Mother and Child
Sadly we'll have to assume it's not for another year (sigh... All these movies completed and placed on shelves). After all, Spc is already octomom of the Oscars for 2009. So very fertile they are. Eldest children include: An Education, Moon and Coco Before Chanel. But there's a whole litter about to drop (and now I promise I'll quit with this pregnant metaphor): The White Ribbon, »

Michael Martin's profile of Tom Sturridge is a perfect introduction to the young British actor:
It's been a few years since Sturridge got his break playing the son of Annette Bening's character in 2004's Being Julia. But he didn't mind the hiatus. "I want to do good stuff, which basically means waiting a bit," he says. Of course it's all timing: "If we did this interview next week, I'd say, ‘Listen, motherfucker, I'm playing Batman tomorrow!' - - -
- - - I've seen him in almost all his movies. While it took me about two sittings to totally absorb 'Like Minds', his portrayal of the mysterious Nigel Colbie, remained hyptonic and consistent throughout the movie. I find the casting of Tom and Eddie Redmayne to be just perfect. I was hoping to see Jamie Bell and Tom in Jumper, and anticipate another great team up, »

- You have to admire European film industry folks - they go to bat for their filmmakers. Further proof that European filmmakers do have it good, the Board of Management of the Council of Europe's Eurimages Fund agreed to support 13 feature films with some Euros and among the featured projects and filmmakers we have veterans Istvan Szabo (Being Julia), Nanni Moretti (Quiet Chaos) and Bent Hamer (O'Horten) receiving some coin for their latest. Danis Tanovic, who just preemed his film Triage at Tiff will receive once again multi-territory support for Cirkus Columbia, while A Town Called Panic pair Vincent Patar & Stéphane Aubier team for another animated project. Spanish director Iciar Bollain (see pic) is prepping her film Even the Rain - a biopic on Christopher Columbus with actors Luis Tosar and Belén Rueda. Here is the full list below of films to watch out for in late 2010, 2011 and beyond. Kai »

Today’s roundup of Oscar news 'n' notes from around the web …
Pete Hammond looks at the possibility of Annette Bening and Hilary Swank facing off in the best actress category once again, just as they did in 1999 with “American Beauty” and “Boys Don’t Cry,” respectively (Swank won), and in 2004 with “Being Julia” and “Million Dollar Baby” (ditto). The prospect depends on Bening’s movie, “Mother and Child,” getting U.S. distribution and a 2009 release date ... and then, of course, on the... »

Woody Allen's one-man finishing school for talented up-and-coming actresses has a new recruit, with British newcomer Lucy Punch joining his new, and so-far untitled, London project. Punch replaces Nicole Kidman, who was forced to drop out last month due to clashes with John Cameron Mitchell's Rabbit Hole. She joins a high-profile cast that includes Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts and Freida Pinto. Although Allen has gone all secret-squirrel and divulged virtually nothing about the project, Variety suggests that Punch is (and therefore Kidman originally was) slated to play a high-class escort (yes, Kidman). This definitely qualifies as news that doesn't sound quite right... watch this space for more.As career boasts go, it's a corker for Punch, who has hitherto concentrated on stage work this side of the pond but is known Stateside for her turn in Emmy-nominated CBS sitcom The Class. The 31 year-old has »

Twilight was the toast of the MTV Movie Awards winning five major prizes. But who gives a shit. Sacha Baron Cohen just tea bagged Eminem. Now that’s what I want more of at my awards shows. Yes, the bit is ripped off from a similar stunt by Howard Stern pulled at the Vma’s some while ago. And Cohen is no Stern. And yes the whole Eminem walking out thing does all appear to be scripted after a 2nd viewing. But that’s ok I still find it funny as hell because there is still a part of my brain that hasn’t developed since I was 11. And a part of me still wants to think that Eminem truely got served. Well decide for yourself: 2009 MTV Movie Awards: Brüno Presents Best Male Performance [1] Variety reports that Nicole Kidman’s replacement in Woody Allen’s yet to be titled 2010 film »

I really don't have much to say about this since I have no real idea who Lucy Punch is even though her filmography tells me I have seen her in Hot Fuzz and Being Julia. However, the fact she has just been cast in Woody Allen's next film as Nicole Kidman's replacement is news worth a mention. On top of that, Variety also has story details, which are usually scarce when it comes to an Allen feature before it hits the marketing stage. Sources tell Variety Punch will play a high-priced call girl similar to Ashley Dupre, who was at the center of the scandal that brought down New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer. Other than that, all that is known is the film is a return to Europe for Allen, with the new film shooting in London this summer and reteams the director with financer, Mediapro, the Spain-based »

Variety reports that Woody Allen has chosen British actress Lucy Punch to star in his latest movie, which will be shot in London. Punch replaces Nicole Kidman, who had to withdraw due to a scheduling conflict with John Cameron Mitchell's The Rabbit Hole, which she is starring in and producing. Details of the plot of Allen's movie are unclear, but according to sources, Punch may play an escort similar to the one made famous by the Eliot Spitzer scandal.
Punch's previous credits include Being Julia, Hot Fuzz, Young Americans, and CBS's sitcom The Class She joins a cast that includes Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Naomi Watts, and Freida Pinto.

- Two weeks after announcing that Nicole Kidman would not be part of the stellar Woody Allen film lineup, the director has finally found his (call) girl. Complete unknown Lucy Punch gets to play alongside folks we already know (Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts and Freida Pinto) in the Mediapro production set to commence lensing this summer in the U.K. No exactly ego-crusher news, Kidman is unable to be on two sets at the same time - she is starring in one of my most anticipated films to see of 2010 in John Cameron-Mitchell's Rabbit Hole. Punch will play a high-priced call girl similar to Ashley Dupre, who was at the center of the scandal that brought down New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer. The actress had a noteworthy supporting role in István Szabó's Being Julia, where she played an actress who gets what she wants »
