Today's Cinematic Birthdays 11/131312 Edward III (of Windsor), not the gay one who gets more cinematic treatment (including Derek Jarman's fascinating take), but his son. This is the one Shakespeare wrote a play about and the one who Mel Gibson implied to be the bastard son of Braveheart William Wallace, thereby giving the finger to history unless Wallace's sperm could survive years past his death. That Gibson's sperm could magically endure beyond the grave is far more likely. He already has eight children.1833 Edwin Thomas Booth, famous influential thespian and the 19th century's most prominent Hamlet. He's been portrayed onscreen and stage by famous thespians like Richard Burton and Frank Langella, usually in stories connected to his estranged brother's assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Will someone play him in the Spielberg helmed Lincoln film?

Could it be? Have our prayer's been answered? Latino Review is reporting that Steven Spielberg's Old Boy starring Will Smith is dead in the water. Apparently Dreamworks and original Korean production studio Mandate were working together to get the rights to the manga, but the two couldn't reach an agreement, and Dreamworks simply walked away. Spielberg's film was to be an adaptation of the original manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, and not a direct remake of Park Chan-wook's Oldboy. I honestly loathed this project a lot less when we learned that they were looking at the manga more than the film, but at the same time it would have been impossible not to compare Spielberg's vision to Park's. Had Spielberg tapped a more compelling actor for the role, I probably would have even been excited for this project. It'd be like Scorsese remaking Infernal Affairs as The »

Asian superstar Edison Chen is returning to the big screen for the first time since a sex photo scandal threatened to ruin his career.
The Hong Kong-based singer/actor hit headlines last year after over 1,000 intimate shots of him engaged in sexual acts with several different women - all rising stars in Asia - hit the web.
The furore around the sex snaps forced Chen to flee Hong Kong and the controversy ended the entertainment careers of most of the girls involved.
But studio bosses have decided to give Chen another chance, and have signed him up to appear in new English-language comedy Almost Perfect.
The film tells the story of a girl who juggles her boyfriend and her family, and is reportedly set to his Chinese cinemas next year.
Chen has previously appeared in Infernal Affairs, The Grudge 2, and also had a cameo in last year's Batman movie The Dark Knight. »

Seeing as Craig has already covered State Of Play I won’t go into much detail here.
I suggest you read his detailed review and all I’m going to add is that it really is an intelligent ensemble piece that has good acting from an impressive cast.
It’s nice to see a smart American film for a change, one that actually has something to say and a message to bring across. It’s a shame that it didn’t light up the box office because it deserved success.
Definitely worth your time if you are looking for a higher level of entertainment.
State Of Play is also available on Blu-Ray

Now here’s a handy bit of timing: Just over a week away from the film taking its bow at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, the first six minutes of Soi Cheang’s Johnnie To-produced crime thriller Accident has been posted online. There are no English subtitles, unfortunately, but they’re not particularly necessary to understand what’s happening. Verdict? I think it looks stellar and the inside word from those few who have seen it is that Accident is absolutely stellar, the film that should push its director to widespread international recognition. Here’s how Tiff describes it:
It is no hyperbole to say that Accident is one of the finest Hong Kong crime dramas since Infernal Affairs. Director Soi Cheang, known more for his gritty and violent cult films such as Dog Bite Dog and Shamo, has graduated to the master class with this gripping, smartly constructed and psychologically fascinating thriller. »

Killer Imports [1] is a regular feature on Film Junk where we explore foreign-language films from around the world that haven’t yet had their chance to shine. See Jackie Chan drive a farm tractor on an iced, shallow pond and fall through! That’s the only promotional blurb I can think of to sell this latest Jackie Chan movie to a Jackie Chan audience. Shinjuku Incident marks Jackie Chan’s first full attempt at a dramatic role. His role in the 2004 New Police Story movie was more of a transitory role in which he got to do some emoting as a drunken cop and for which he received a Best Actor nomination by the Hong Kong Film Awards and a win by the Golden Rooster Awards. And although there is action in this movie with gangs fighting each other, Jackie’s trademark stunts and fighting skills are nowhere to be seen. »

It's hardly uncommon for the American film industry to remake popular foreign films. Take Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning "The Departed," based on the Hong Kong-spawned "Infernal Affairs" series. How often does it work the other way around though? Before you ask, yes, I am aware of "Indian Thriller."
Such a reverse remake is in the works via Sony Pictures Classics, which will distribute filmmaker Zhang Yimou's planned remake of "Blood Simple," the classic thriller that marked Joel and Ethan Coen's first co-directorial endeavor. The distribution deal means that the still untitled "Blood Simple" remake will see release in North America, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand.
According to Variety, Yimou's take on "Blood Simple" sets the plot in a desert-bound Chinese noodle shop as the restaurant's owner plans to murder his adulterous wife and her lover.

Shaw Brothers, known for innovative martial arts movies during the '60s, is coming back at a time when the Hong Kong filmmaking industry needs them.
Under a joint venture with the partially Shaw-owned Television Broadcasts Limited, the studio has four films either scheduled to be released or in production through 2010. The slate is based on a three-pronged strategy to target local audiences, mobilize local film industry workers, and to showcase Shaw Studios, a Us$180 million facility in Hong Kong’s Clearwater Bay.
Virginia Lok, production resources division controller for Television Broadcasts Limited, said a number of local filmmakers are now working abroad, and as a result, productions have decreased.
"Although a lot of Hong Kong filmmakers are now working in China, a considerable number of crews remain in Hong Kong; there weren’t enough jobs," Lok said. "Our priority is to hire Hong Kong crew and Hong Kong actors in our films. »
