tMF Top 50: Best Movies of the 2000s (40-31)

28 December 2009 11:27 PM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

We continue our look at the Top 50 best films of the decade.  In case you missed the previous list, see #50-41 here.

40. United 93 (2006)

It takes guts to make a movie about the four terrorists that took over United Flight 93 and plagued us Americans with a day we won’t ever forget. No doubt that Paul Greengrass would have to climb an uphill battle to get this movie the way he wanted it to look but he does the film justice, more importantly the victims on this flight get supreme recognition. He makes it impossible for us to take our eyes off of the screen. The camera style throws us unto the plane of the teary eyed, enraged passengers whose emotions are unexplainable. Its heart-wrenching seeing the passengers come as one and do what they have to do, risking their lives to save »

Nellie McKay: Normal as Blueberry Pie: A Tribute to Doris Day

12 October 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Sweet As Pie

By: Steve Labate

Nellie McKay’s gorgeously understated new album, Normal As Blueberry Pie, is everything a tribute record should be. McKay shows a genuine love and respect for her subject, not to mention a seemingly intuitive understanding of the long-forgotten appeal of singer/actress Doris Day—who, over the years, has become synonymous with the stodgy, overly sentimental schmaltz of the irony-free era from which she came, an era that seems to lie across the chasm of history, out of our reach. Backed by some fantastically talented jazz musicians, McKay bridges this gap, breathing life into Day’s out-of-vogue material; giving old standards a new sense of purpose that transcends nostalgia and makes them feel at home in the modern world. She tackles both popular and obscure Day-delivered numbers—written by legends like George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Johnny Mercer, »

In recent years, riding on the popularity of the Saw franchise, Lionsgate has come up with a veritable assembly line model for horror film marketing. That's not to say they haven't been surprisingly selective in the kind of material they put out; High Tension, Open Water, and The Descent have all been relatively well-received and have found a decent audience, particularly Neil Marshall's nerve-racking cave-dweller horror film. The Burrowers, a straight-to-dvd release from the studio, is a surprise, in that it offers not only a novel setting but also more than competent acting and eye-catching cinematography.

A horror western is a unique concept that requires a masterful balancing act, utilized to great effect in Alex Turner's disturbing Dead Birds, released in 2004. Whereas Dead Birds focused largely on a single location and functioned as a psychological thriller, The Burrowers is much more in vein of a western, »

Actor and playwright Sam Shepard was arrested the other night for allegedly driving drunk. The actor was caught speeding through Normal, Illinois, at 46 mph, in a 30 mph zone early Saturday morning. According to police, Shepard had been drinking at a local bar and was on his way back to his hotel when he was stopped for speeding. Sam Shepherd Rung Up on DUI Charge

3 January 2009 12:50 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Talk about the wrong stuff. Sam Shepherd was busted Saturday in Illinois for drunken driving and speeding. The Right Stuff star told officers in the town of Normal that he had made a pitstop at a local watering hole before heading to a hotel around 2 a.m. He was pulled over for doing 46 in a 30 mph zone, and his blood-alcohol level registered twice the legal limit, police said. Shepard posted $300 and was released from the McLean County jail a few hours later, and he presumably resumed his road trip back the Kentucky home he shares with Jessica Lange. No court date has been scheduled. As an actor, Shepherd's best known for his Oscar-nominated turn as Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff; other credits »
