Screenwriter Larry Cohen is the writer of “Phone Booth” and “Cellular”, so right away you should expect a pretty nifty premise for a thriller that can be made on the cheap. Or a moderate budget that doesn’t involve hiring a superstar for $20 million. Cohen’s latest is “Messages Deleted”, about a screenwriter (played by a nearly unrecognizable Matthew Lillard) who becomes involved in a series of killings that seem to mirror one of his scripts way too closely. Predictably, the cops start to suspect that he might be responsible, and really, can you blame them? Especially when the about-to-be-dead victims start calling him and begging him for help. Luckily for our hero, one of the cops investigating him is Deborah Kara Unger, so there’s that. Matthew Lillard doesn’t have the chops to be a good dramatic actor. I learned this years ago with Thirteen Ghosts. However, you can’t blame the man for trying, because there aren’t any Scooby Doo sequels on the horizon. (There is a made for TV prequel coming, though, if that’s your thing. Lillard isn’t involved.)
Director Rob Cowan (The Crazies remake, Righteous Kill, The Net) has completed screenwriter Larry Cohen’s Messages Deleted, the third in a string of phone-centric films from the writer following Cellular and Phone Booth.
While the central concept of the film isn’t altogether bad, Lillard seems silly and Deborah Kara Unger doesn’t seem to help. The official plot synopsis is as follows:

That master juggler of the high concept and the low budget Larry Cohen has had a bit of a late surge of telecommunications-themed thrillers. The latest example is Messages Deleted, and you can check out the trailer here.Cohen of course, is the director of It's Alive, Return to Salem's Lot and Q The Winged Serpent, but he's as well known for his screenplays as his talent behind a camera. Phone Booth was directed by Batman villain Joel Schumacher, and Cellular by former stuntman David R Ellis, who went on to Snakes on a Plane and The Final Destination. It looks like screenwriter Larry Cohen has one final movie to file in his unofficial telephone-focused trilogy, a C-rate thriller titled Messages Deleted starring Matthew Lillard and Deborah Kara Unger. The first trailer has arrived for Phone Booth / Cellular writer, Larry Cohen's, new one Messages Deleted. It's got a kind of tightly-wound I Know What You did Last Summer meets 88 Minutes vibe to it so I think it definitely has the potential to be a decedent mid-budget thriller.

Warner Brothers Entertainment aimed to bring viewers to complete visual meltdown with the release of the movie “Final Destination 4,” so they partnered with Virtual Images — The 3-D Company, to promote it.
The creative team at Virtual Images, consisting of 3-D artists and 3-D designers, worked with the studio to create visually stunning art that depicts a human skull and shards of glass jumping out of the piece toward the viewer. The 4th installment in the popular Final Destination film series is receiving hype surrounding the self-exacted slogan, “Death Saved the Best for 3D,” and the 3-D movie posters produced to promote the movie fit that bill.

TNT Renews Leverage for a Third Season

Leverage has been having a fantastic second season on TNT, averaging around 4.1 million viewers each week. In addition to the fantastic cast on the show there have also been some great guest stars this season, including Wil Wheaton and Griffin Dunne, both of whom happened to be on last night's new episodes.
TNT has picked up the series for a third season which will start in the summer of 2010 and include 15 new episodes.
“Thanks in large part to its engaging cast and clever storytelling, Leverage has proven itself to be one of the most exciting and fun hours on television,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). “The producers, cast and crew have been incredible to work with, and we anticipate another wonderful season.”

Kim Basinger is set to join Zac Efron in Burr Steers' upcoming drama "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud," with Universal Pictures developing the project.
Based on the novel by Ben Sherwood, the film follows Efron as a cemetary caretaker who meets weekly with a younger brother, who recently died.
Variety says Basinger will play the grieving mother of the lead character. Also starring as Efron's love interest is Amanda Crew.
Basinger's more recent credits include "Cellular," "The Sentinel" and "The Burning Plain." Good to have her back on the big screen.

Ellis made a name for himself in the horror genre with the 2003 release of Final Destination 2, but since then films such as Cellular and Snakes on a Plane didn't manage to connect with audiences. Up next for the helmer is the summer ending 3-D feature Final Destination: Death Trip 3D and his new feature announced by Variety sounds like something that could either be great or another Snakes debacle. The new film is titled Humpty Dumpty and it isn't about an egg shaped nursery rhyme character, instead it is a 3-D sci-fi horror pic is about a half-human, half-alien creature who embarks on a murderous rampage after his alien mother is abused by two rednecks in the Deep South. Unknown scripter Billy Majestic is penning the screenplay and the film will be produced by Mark Ordesky's Amber Entertainment. Production is expected to begin in September. »

• Universal has decided to delay Gore Verbinski'a big-screen adaptation of "Bioshock" because of the size of the budget. $160 million is apparenty more than the studio wants to invest into the project, and as Verbinski told Variety, he's now considering moving the production outside the U.S.

Writer Larry Cohen certainly has a love/hate relationship with phones of all kinds. I mean, even before cell phones became our favorite and most hated form of communications, he was using the pay phone as a device for thrilling cinema. Then he made Cellular and now he's got a new phone themed thriller in the can called Messages Deleted about:
A screenwriting teacher who is forced to live out the plot of a screenplay idea he stole from a student, who now seeks revenge.
Messages Deleted stars Matthew Lillard (that's him with a gun to his head) and the beauteous Deborah Kara Unger. It's directed by producer Rob Cowan who is currently producing The Crazies. There's no word on the film's official release date but I know it's done because it screened at the European Film Market back in February.

I'd never met either Chris Evans or Dakota Fanning before today. I was actually a fan of Chris and thought he was one of the bright spots in Fantastic Four. I had a blast with Cellular and need I mention Sunshine. But to be honest, I hadn't seen much of Dakota. Sure I knew she had been in War Of The Worlds and a ton of other movies, but I really had little knowledge of her film career beforehand.
