Blu-Ray Review: ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ Looks Amazing in HD

17 December 2009 1:04 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” is one of the most visually striking films of a year filled with achievements in great cinematography. I love Deakins’ work on “A Serious Man,” Richardson’s on “Inglourious Basterds,” and Christian Berger’s on “The White Ribbon,” but Bruno Delbonnel (who also lensed “Amelie”) has helped produce one of the most aesthetically remarkable films of the year, easily the most interesting interplay of shadow and light yet seen in a “Potter” film. Naturally, it makes for a great fit with the 1080p of Blu-Ray.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

After shuffling directors for four installments in a row from Chris Columbus to Alfonso Cuaron to Mike Newell, the “Harry Potter” series settled on the relatively unknown David Yates for the final four films (“The Order of the Phoenix,” “The Half-Blood Prince,” and the two-part “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”).

Lara Stone Upends Madonna at Louis Vutton (Photos)

14 December 2009 11:40 AM, PST | TheImproper.com | See recent TheImproper.com news »

Shapely Dutch model Lara Stone has ended Madonna’s reign as the face and body of Louis Vutton, although she wore the crown well for two seasons. Vuitton designer Marc Jacobs apparently wanted a younger fresher image; after all, Stone at 25, is half Madonna’s age. “To model the clothes, we wanted a modern, iconic, sexy beauty… It had to be Lara Stone,” Jacobs said in a recent interview. Ouch! Sorry, Madonna. The fashion spots will run in tandem with Vuitton’s “core values” campaign highlighting its travel roots. The campaign will also match geezers Sean Connery and astronaut Buzz Aldrin with the hot young model, so there is still something to say for age. Dutch photographer Desiree Dolron shot the series, which is supposd to be reminiscent of Johannes Vermeer’s painting “Girl With a Pearl Earring,” which is so enigmatic it inspired a movie starring Scarlett Johansson. »

Anyone who knows anything about "Twilight" scribe Stephenie Meyer knows that the vampire-spawning writer has eclectic taste in music. Earlier this year, she blogged about what she did all summer, which included listening to bands you may or may not know like Meese and White Rabbits, as well as some you might, like Muse, Animal Collective and Silversun Pickups.

She's posted suggested playlists for fans of her book series that includes everything from Placebo, Blue October and Armor for Sleep to Elbow, Coldplay, Patrick Wolf, Simon and Garfunkel, Korn, Incubus, Nine Inch Nails and Right Said Fred.

On Monday, the track listing for the upcoming soundtrack to "New Moon" was revealed and it has the same mix of the popular and somewhat-obscure that fans »

Scarlett Johansson, a Potential Marilyn Monroe in 'My Week with Marilyn'

31 July 2009 11:03 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Scarlett Johansson may bring legendary actress Marilyn Monroe to life on the big screen. The actress who portrays Black Widow in "Iron Man 2" has been considered by director Simon Curtis to portray the late superstar for his upcoming biopic, "My Week with Marilyn", as reported by The Insider.

Among the potential actresses in Curtis' list, Johansson is said to be the filmmaker's first option to take on the leading female character. According to newspaper columnist Baz Bamigboye, her contenders for the role include "Bride Wars" leading lady Kate Hudson, "Doubt" star Amy Adams and "Shutter Island" actress Michelle Williams.

"My Week with Marilyn" is a drama biopic based on the diary of Laurence Olivier's employee, Colin Clark, who looked after the blond bombshell when she came to London in 1957 to film Olivier's "The Prince and the Showgirl". In the diary, Clark talked about showing Monroe around Queen Elizabeth's »

Exclusive: Final One-Sheet for 'St. Trinian's'!

Cinematical has just received this exclusive final U.S. one-sheet for St.Trinian's, the British comedy that boasts a whole mixture of Brit talent from Talulah Riley and Gemma Arterton to Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Russell Brand, and Lena Headey.

Directed by Oliver Parker and Barnaby Thompson, the film focuses on St. Trinians, a girls' school full of ne'er do wells run by headmistress Camilla Fritton (played by Everett ... in drag no less, he's one in from the left). There are two big problems facing the school: One, it's broke. Two, Fritton's ex-flame (Firth), who's also the Education Minister, isn't keen on her insistence on "free expression and self-empowerment." He's the Umbridge to Everett's Dumbledore, if Hogwarts had some hanky panky behind the scenes. Of course, these girls don't want to lose their school, so they decide to steal the famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring »

Watch This: 'St Trinian's' Girls Run Amok

1 July 2009 1:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Ack! Where has this movie been all my life? St. Trinian's is the tall tale of a bevy of badass school girls who plot to steal the famous Vermeer painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring" so they can save their bankrupt school. Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, played by Colin Firth, is determined to make St. Trinian's over into a real school for young ladies. His former paramour is the headmistress Miss Fritton, played by Rupert Everett in drag. (Everett also exec produces.) And Russell Brand is, of course, a mad fellow in a bowler hat named Flash who enables the girls' shenanigans, like boozing and gambling. I'm digging the mischievous twins and the overall take no prisoners 'tude, but not so much the sexy high schoolers in stockings bit with model Lily Cole. Vanity Fair's Hollywood ~ Episode 11 (2005)

26 May 2009 2:21 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Missed previous episodes? See: 1995 , 1996, 1997, 1998 , 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Vanity Fair briefly killed my enthusiasm for the "Hollywood project" when they nixed the traditional cover for 2009. But time heals most wounds and I have reanimated the project's corpse. 2004's cover had 13 already peaking actresses on it. How'd they follow it in 2005? With another batch of goddesses, 60% of whom had already graced their "Hollywood" cover. In the case of the C/Kates, it was now thrice. Was Vanity Fair running out of ideas? Given the idiosyncratic pool the covers regularly pulled from you'd think there were only 40 actresses in Hollywood... but then, it's probably all in who you know who represents you when it comes to face time here. It's definitely not only about the fame. Consider this: this cover series lasted from 1995 - 2008 and Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Michelle Williams and Tilda Swinton never appeared on them (just four chronologically appropriate examples off the »

Gemma Arterton to Star In New Wuthering Heights

15 May 2009 4:52 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

At least in terms of teen appeal, Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights was the Twilight of its day… but seeing as that was way back in 1847, when teens were a little different and less Omg!Omg!, you shouldn’t be put off the latest film adaptation just yet. The Hollywood Reporter tell us that this new adaptation is to star Bond’s oil-slicked Strawberry Fields, Gemma Arterton (also in the upcoming Prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans) and Gossip boy Ed Westwick. As a result, what will set this version apart from any of the others, including the Oscar-winning 1939 film starring Laurence Olivier, is that at 23 and 21, respectively, its stars are pretty much the same age as their characters. This Heights is to be directed by Peter Webber, previously responsible for Girl with a Pearl Earring and the young Hannibal movie though, earlier on, John Mayberry was set »

Gemma Arterton And Ed Westwick Roam The Moors In ‘Wuthering Heights’

15 May 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

English literature contains thousands of classics, but it seems that only three of them are regularly dusted off for a big screen adaptation: Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights,” Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre,” and Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” All three are among my favorites, so I can’t complain, but it’s hard to see them redone over and over again just for the sake of casting the hottest actor or actress of the moment. This new “Wuthering Heights” is no exception, as Variety reports that Gemma Arterton and Ed Westwick have been cast as the immortal couple, Catherine and Heathcliff.

This particular “Heights” has been in the trades quite often. It originally had Natalie Portman in the part of Cathy, but she dropped out and was replaced by Abbie Cornish. Michael Fassbender (”300″) was attached to play Heathcliff; he moved on as well. The producers opted to go younger with the story, »

'Wuthering Heights' Finds a Helmer in Peter Webber

15 May 2009 1:12 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Peter Webber's directorial career includes the awful prequel Hannibal Rising, the forgotten Scarlett Johansson feature Girl with a Pearl Earring and a lone episode of "Six Feet Under" so I am not sure how excited any of us should be over the news he is directing Wuthering Heights, an adaptation of Emily Bronte's novel. About a year ago John Maybury (The Edge of Love) was attached to direct the film, but he has since dropped off. On top of that, almost a year ago exactly Natalie Portman, who was once attached to the film as Catherine Earnshaw, also dropped off the feature. Portman's attachment was, at the time, considered to be a driving force and when she dropped off the film's lifespan looked bleak. Obviously things have changed. Stepping into the role vacated by Portman will be Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) with Ed Westwick playing Heathcliff, a »

Gemma Arterton Hits Wuthering Heights

15 May 2009 12:47 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The casting department for Wuthering Heights can finally breathe a sigh of relief and put the kettle on, with Gemma Arterton and Gossip Girls Ed Westwick signing on to play tempestuous Yorkshire-based couple Cathy and Heathcliff in Ecosse Films' adaptation of Emily Brontë's romantic classic.Selecting the leads to play the stormy couple has been a fittingly overwrought process: Natalie Portman and Abbie Cornish were signed on for the role of the headstrong Cath at one point or other before exiting the project, and Michael Fassbender was also attached to play Cath's fiery lover Heathcliff before departing. Director John Maybury also left before being replaced by Peter Webber (Girl With A Pearl Earring).Arterton is 23 and Westwick 21 so, unlike previous cinematic adaptations, this Wuthering Heights will have a very Gen Y feel. Former Bond Girl Heads To Wuthering Heights

14 May 2009 11:18 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Gemma Arterton had her big moment last fall, when she popped up briefly as Bond girl Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace before getting axed in the name of a giant red herring. But she's about to get a whole lot more screentime, playing tortured young Cathy opposite Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick's Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights, an adaptation of the classic Emily Bronte novel. THR is reporting that Peter Webber, who made the period piece Girl WIth a Pearl Earring, will direct the script by Olivia Hetreed. Arterton and Westwick are both replacing former cast members Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender, who bounced out about a year ago. The idea here is to get away from "stuffy costume drama," which probably won't be hard with Westwick, a popular TV star, on board. Joe Wright breathed new life into Jane Austen with Pride & Prejudice. We'll see what Webber can »

Chicago – The Round-Up, HollywoodChicago.com’s famous recurring column about lesser Blu-Ray and DVD titles that may have slipped through your fingers at the store recently, is in clean-up mode this week. With a DVD collection for a famous young actress, an old cartoon, a straight-to-video horror movie, and three movies with the word “Mountain” in the title, the only word that comes to mind to tie these titles together is “random”.

You know those bins of “impulse buy” items you’ll see in stores near the cash register? Vanity Fair's Hollywood ~ Episode 10 (2004)

With the annual Vanity Fair "Hollywood" issue about to debut for 2009 -- I'm guessing we see the new cover in less than two weeks (Update: the new cover has been leaked and Vanity Fair has chucked their traditional photo shoot *sniffle* for the millionth magazine cover featuring President Obama), let's briefly return to our Vanity Fair retrospectives. "Send in the Gowns" was the title of 2004's photo shoot and they returned to the first year's game plan of glamour girls. The cover was more crowded though, bringing us an unlucky 13. But who was this cover unlucky for?

Maybe all of them, with the exception of Maggie Gyllenhaal (hurrah) and Hilary Swank (known affectionately around these parts as Beelzebub), who was just 11 months away from her second Oscar. Vanity Fair had gotten less daring in their cover »
