The year ahead: showbiz

30 December 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Will Brad and Jen get back together? Where will Sting's private jet take him in his quest to save the planet?

The difficulty in predicting what will happen in the glamorous world of showbiz in the coming year is that the glamorous world of showbiz tends to exceed even the most outlandish of predictions. Why, in just the last two months, Lindsay Lohan has become a fashion designer, fought with her ex-girlfriend, made up with her ex-girlfriend, had a one night stand with an actor who emerged sheepishly from his house carrying a Muppet (no word as yet if the Muppet was involved), went to India to save the poor people and launched a website selling her own clothes. Remember the days when she had barely shot Freaky Friday in that time?

But it's not impossible to foresee what is to come. First, by this time next year, there will be an extraordinarily, »

Lisa Schwarzbaum's 10 movie marvels of the decade

29 December 2009 9:30 AM, PST | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

Notice I didn't say best movies -- that territory has been well covered by far more passionate list makers than I am. (By the way, do you agree with me that a devotion to ranking is primarily a male urge?  Tell me three good reasons why I'm right or wrong. At any rate, I don't have the gene for it.) As the first decade of the 21st century comes to a close, though, here's fodder for your New Year's Eve party: A list, in no particular order, of 10 movie developments from the past 10 years that have impressed, depressed, excited, upset, »

Brittany Murphy Tweets From Peter Facinelli, Paris Hilton And Others In Another Twitter-Wood Early Edition

21 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Earlier today, we brought you an early edition of Twitter-Wood packed chock-full of celebrity praise for James Cameron's sci-fi epic, "Avatar." It's a much more tragic set of circumstances that brings me back to you with another Twitter-Wood early edition.

"Clueless" star Brittany Murphy left us suddenly over the weekend, the victim of a heart attack at the too-young age of 32. The breaking news resulted in an outpouring of grief and sympathy for Murphy's family from around the celebrity Twittersphere. I'll let the people who knew her take it from here...

@ParisHilton So sad to hear about Brittany Murphy, such a tragedy. She was such a beautiful, funny and sweet girl. My heart goes out to her family.

@peterfacinelli Brittany Murphy... U were Bold, Brave, and Beautiful. Thank you 4 being the free spirit u were, and always »

Decade in Review: 2003 Top Ten

8 December 2009 6:30 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

As you may have noticed, I will not be done with my Decade in Review until sometime into the new year. Hopefully we'll wrap up shortly after the Oscars; You know how distractingly all-consuming the Oscars can be! I hope you'll stay with it even though the rest of the media will move on any second now. They're always in such a rush. No stopping and smelling of the flowers. I've still got to update that "Actors of the Aughts" project for final compilation/statement. For now, let's move on to 2003. What follows is my original top ten list, based on films released in NYC in 2003. If I have anything new to say that'll be in red after the original text.

Special Mentions: The Cremaster Cycle and Angels in America

Most Underappreciated: Hulk (Ang Lee), In the Cut (Jane Campion), Anything Else (Woody Allen), Charlies Angels: Full Throttle (McG) and »

So Mick, when your washed-up British-director character was suspended in the air while mid-insertion into his cute female Pa and the cenobites filmed them while they had their skin and bones ripped apart by machines, was that a metaphor for how you have no privacy? Mick? Where are you going? Can we watch?"...

It's Freaky Monday At CBS Films

13 October 2009 7:20 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

When it comes to the Lindsay Lohan remakes of 70s-era Disney movies, I am firmly in favor of the best two, The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday. But honestly, being able to make decent remakes of either of those movies was a complete fluke, and trying it again would be completely foolish. Well, Disney is at least smart enough not to try it, and CBS Films isn't doing it... not exactly. Instead they're adapting Freaky Monday, the follow-up book written by original Freaky Friday author Mary Rodgers and Heath Hach, who sold CBS Films the rights. According to Variety the book finds an insecure girl (apparently not the original Jodie Foster character) switching places with her sympathetic English teacher, which sounds like a much less interesting switch than the mother-daughter combo. Still, body-switching comedies are always in vogue, and I'll admit I've got a weakness for them myself. They've got »

Get ready for Freaky Monday

13 October 2009 12:44 AM, PDT | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Back in 2003, the remake of Freaky Friday made lots of money for Disney. So it only stands to reason that a sequel would be developed. Yet now, six years later, the Mouse House is not behind a possible new film - nope, CBS Films is spurring the sequel project, albeit with the Lindsay Lohan movie's team attached to shepherd it along. Director MArk Waters - who will apparently only produce this time and producer Andrew Gunn are overseeing work on adapting the novel Freaky Monday, written by Heather Hach and Mary Rodgers. Freaky Friday Follow-Up Planned

12 October 2009 11:56 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Remember the days when Lindsay Lohan was famous as an actress in quirky teen comedies? Remember how good she was in Freaky Friday? Well, somebody does, since CBS has just optioned a novel sequel to the movie in the shape of Freaky Monday. Now this won't involve Lohan or Jamie Lee Curtis, stars of Freaky Friday (but we just couldn't resist that picture below), since it centres on a whole new body swop. In this case, it's a smart-but-insecure teenager who ends up swapped into her teacher's body. The novel was written by Legally Blonde: The Musical writer Heather Hachs, along with Mary Rodgers, the author of the original Freaky Friday way back in 1973. There's no word yet on a cast or crew for this one, but Mark Waters, who directed the Lee Curtis / Lohan film, is producing so it's possible he'll direct as well. Either way, expect body-switching hilarity »

CBS Films is teaming with producers Andrew Gunn and Mark Watersset for the teen comedy Freaky Monday, set to adapt the novel by Freaky Friday author Heather Hach.

According to Variety, Hach co-wrote Freaky Monday with Mary Rodgers, author of the 1973 novel Freaky Friday.

Freaky Monday centers on a smart but insecure girl who magically switches bodies with her sympathetic junior high English teacher for a day.

I wonder which is more surprising: that it took to 6 years for someone to think of cashing in with a sequel to Freaky Friday or that it's not even coming from Disney! CBS Films acquired the rights to Freaky Monday, co-written by the original 1973 novel's author Mary Rodgers with the Lohan-version screenwriter Heather Hatch. That one also wrote the Legally Blonde musical. Insert sound of thousands of guys slapping their forehead at the thought of a grueling chick-flick date. Let's have a »

What Do You Mean There's Nothing On?!?!?!!

31 August 2009 11:28 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Summer's winding down and television is about to get ramped up again. Already "Mad Men" has returned and new shows like "Glee" will be dipping their toes into the water very soon. But, there are some shows that are pretty good right now. And, if you like to try new things, you can always be rewarded for flipping that remote. Right now, on the more entertaining shows on television is "Drop Dead Diva" (Lifetime, Sundays at 9pm and throughout the week).

I think we can all agree that going to your own funeral would suck, no?

The concept of "Drop Dead Diva" could be cringe worthy, a shallow young model and a zaftig lawyer both die at the same time. The model's spirit inhabits the new body in an "All of Me" type situation. Hilarity shouldn't ensue. But, it kind of does. In fact, to me what makes the show »

Blu-ray review: Zac Efron shines in ‘17 Again’ despite predictability

19 August 2009 12:15 PM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Zac Efron plays young Mike O’Donnell, a former super-stud high school basketball player who grew up to be Matthew Perry. Once the most popular kid in school (We know this because during a basketball game he joined the cheerleading squad mid-performance and executed all the circa-1989 dance moves with perfection.), Mike is now in the midst of a failed marriage and his kids want nothing to do with him. Sad because Mike gave up his chance at college b-ball glory when his girlfriend Scarlett became pregnant and literally dropped everything to do the honorable thing by getting hitched. Now, subconsciously, Mike resents his choices and wonders for 20 years hence what could have been. Pro ball player? Maybe. One thing is for sure, he probably wouldn’t be drowning in the blah of pharmaceuticals marketing where he’s constantly passed up on promotions for younger, prettier co-workers by a Bluetooth earpiece-sporting d-bag. »

Blu-Ray Review: Charming ‘17 Again’ With Zac Efron Works For All Audiences

16 August 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – While I watched the relatively clever and surprisingly charming “17 Again,” I kept thinking the same thing - “John Hughes would have totally dug this movie.” The recently deceased king of ’80s teen comedies feels like a clear inspiration for this Zac Efron vehicle, now on Blu-Ray and DVD.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 Clearly designed to transition Efron from his “High School Musical” audience to one that can get into a PG-13 movie without a parent or guardian, “17 Again” is a bit edgier, but still a softball, mostly family-oriented comedy. Writer Jason Filardi and director Burr Steers are going for that thing that John Hughes did so well - entertainment for both teenagers and their parents.

17 Again was released on Blu-Ray on August 11th, 2009.

The Blu-Ray Review: 17 Again

11 August 2009 12:43 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Colin Jacobson reviews the Zac Efron pic on the home HD format.

Teen idol Zac Efron tries to broaden his cinematic appeal with 2009's 17 Again. We open in 1989 and meet high school senior Mike O'Donnell (Efron). As the star basketball player, he has a bright future ahead of him, but he gives up that path when he finds out that his girlfriend Scarlett (Allison Miller) is pregnant.

We leap ahead 18 years to meet Mike as a 37-year-old (Matthew Perry). To say the least, his life hasn't turned out as planned. Though still legally married to Scarlett (Leslie Mann), they're two weeks from finalizing their divorce, and he lives out of the house. His kids Maggie (Michelle Trachtenberg) and Alex (Sterling Knight) want virtually nothing to do with him, and he's stuck in a dead-end job.

Given his current depression and ennui, Mike wishes he could return to a more promising time - say, »

Which was the best year for movies: 1977, 1994, or 1999?

5 August 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Last week, we posted a story about how 1984 was the best movie year ever when it comes to films you actually want to watch on a rainy day playing hooky from work. Movies like Ghostbusters, Bachelor Party, This is Spinal Tap, Footloose, and The Terminator. Movies that were the exact opposite of the highfalutin' offerings from 1939 -- the year critics always cite as the greatest Hollywood vintage of all time. Don't get us wrong, there were some decent high-brow movies from 25 years ago, too, like Amadeus and The Killing Fields. But mostly we were talking about movies that were, you know, fun. And while some of you agreed with us about 1984's greatness, others were outraged. Apoplectic. Even concerned for our sanity. Some even made cases for other "greatest years". And we listened.
