Thank you Roger Ebert, for taking the words right out of my mouth. 2 Fast 2 Furious is exactly that: a lame-brained, mindless and moronic film that is nothing but dumb entertainment, but boy does it deliver on what it promises. It's mindless schlock, put together by a bunch of film-making amateurs that have little intent but to show off their cars and their bling; in a sense, the entire movie is a plug for the latest range of cars and products for a low-grade car garage in Miami, Florida.
But one must remember what the intended goal of a movie is in order to truly judge and critique it. In this case, 2 Fast 2 Furious sets out to do one thing and one thing only: to pass the time, to let one escape from reality and to entertain the masses and that's pretty much what it does. It may be dumb-witted and swiftly and slackly put together, but ultimately the film achieves its purpose, making it a success.
But when you look at the filmic aspects of the movie, then in the end 2 Fast 2 Furious is a success but it's still an idiotic movie; in other words, it's faults and countless issues manage to bring down the film's strong point, and in the end counteract them. When ignoring the sheer entertainment factor that the movie possesses, it's really quite a bad movie, filled to the brim with hammy acting, hammy characters, poor and incoherent plot lines and over-the-top theatrics.
Once again following rookie police detective Brian O'Connor or should I say, ex-rookie police detective Brian O'Connor, the movie is an adrenaline rush and wild ride through a criminal underworld in Miami Florida. Brian's been taken back by the FBI despite his wanting to keep away from the authorities, and this time he's teamed up with former friend and ally Roman Pearce. Together they must infiltrate the drug cartel of Carter Verone, a long-time target of the authorities.
It's blindingly obvious that this sequel is inferior to the great ride that was its predecessor, which did have problems but was saved by its entertainment factor. In the case of 2 Fast 2 Furious, the movie's problems are not saved by its entertainment factor.
The movie has so many bad things to say about it, and watching the movie makes you think that a 15 year old directed the film. Containing one of the most annoying and forgettable casts ever conceived, with the likes of the tiring, stereotypical Cuban drug lord (the director has obviously seen Scarface a few too many times) and the annoying aforesaid Pearce who says the word 'bro' as 'bra', the entire cast of lead characters and secondary characters are enough to drive you insane, right from the moment the film begins.
To add to this abysmal cast we have the over-the-top theatrics which are evident throughout the entire film, although they do die down as the film progresses. The fast, rapid cuts, close-ups and use of CGI in the film give off a feeling that the director is trying so hard to make a unique and memorable movie, one that tops the original and is artistic. Let me say that none of these 'dreams' are achieved, and the horrid direction backfires, making the movie all the more dreadful.
But like I said, the entertainment value of the film manages to counteract its seemingly endless list of bad qualities, and 2 Fast 2 Furious turns out to be an average movie. It does achieve its goal and it does entertain it entertains damn well, keeping the audience on the edge of their seat at some parts. But everything else about the movie the technical side of things and filmic attributes to be frank, stinks. When you're being swept up by the sheer entertainment value of the film when watching it, just try not to think about everything else going on on-screen. It might truly ruin the viewing experience for you.
