Brute Launch from Nowhere

Last year, American critics pretty fairly stood aghast and in awe of Ronald Bronstein's "Frownland" (2007), conjuring up some of the most intense superlatives ever thrown at a cheap New York indie (the New Yorker's Richard Brody called it "one of the most unusual and audacious American independent films ever made"), while still sweating bullets of qualification, as if holding a wolverine by the short hairs.

It didn't make much of a difference to audiences, who hardly noticed, but now that the film is being rather spectacularly DVD'd by the new Brooklyn outfit Factory 25, viewers can step up to this vicious peepshow and decide for themselves. Me, I'm not terribly convinced of the film's brilliance or of the necessity of deflating the hoopla; the impact of "Frownland"'s distinctive relentlessness has more to do, I think, with our expectations of film narrative than with the movie's aesthetic triumph. Chang-dong Finds Lead For 'Poetry'

29 August 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- I'm not sure if it took much coaxing to bring actress Jeong-hie Yun out from her 15 year semi-retirement, but it helps that the last actress (Do-yeon Jeon) in filmmaker Lee Chang-dong's last film, Secret Sunshine, would win Best Actress in Cannes, and it also helps that the film, currently in production, is a sure shot for a Cannes slot.  Known for Peppermint Candy and Oasis, the Korean filmmaker will be exploring a portion in a human's timeline that is rarely addressed in film (the over sixty-plus crowd normally don't receive their own storylines) via Poetry is a drama about a lonely woman (Jeong-hie Yun) in her 60s, who is searching for a new meaning at the end of her life. Variety mentions that, "Yoon was one of the most popular stars in the country during the 1960s and '70s, starring in more than 300 films. After marrying Korean pianist Paik Kunwoo, »

Korea Chooses Mother for the Oscars

11 August 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Last year the hit Swedish vampire picture Let the Right One In was passed over for Oscar submission in favor of the historical drama Everlasting Moments (which was nearly nominated last year). This year another vampiric import meets the same fate. Thirst, currently on Us screens, was passed over in favor of Bong Joon-ho's acclaimed drama Mother. The Hollywood Reporter claims that six films were considered but only names three, the third being the hit documentary Old Partner about a man and his beloved ox. But back to Thirst. It's probably a wise snub on Korea's part. AMPAS has just never loved the blood suckers. The gold man might as well be carrying a stake instead of a sword.

This is not to say that Mother isn't a deserving choice. It's the story of a woman out to prove her son's innocence in a local murder. Word is that it's a very good picture. »
