The precursors have been squeezed into an unusually small period this year. The Globes, Bfca, Nyfcc, Lafca and SAG all announced in the space of one week. That's not business as usual. I guess this is one way to squeeze out all those regional critics groups because... who will care now? What does all this mean for Oscar? Generally clear consensus between the major precursors means that Oscar will be nearly a carbon copy. But with an unusual amount of time between the actors announcement and the announcement of Oscar nominations (Still more than a month away) it Might mean that Academy voters react to and against these lists, rather than along with them if you know what I mean. Do you know what I mean?

As you may have noticed, I will not be done with my Decade in Review until sometime into the new year. Hopefully we'll wrap up shortly after the Oscars; You know how distractingly all-consuming the Oscars can be! I hope you'll stay with it even though the rest of the media will move on any second now. They're always in such a rush. No stopping and smelling of the flowers. I've still got to update that "Actors of the Aughts" project for final compilation/statement. For now, let's move on to 2003. What follows is my original top ten list, based on films released in NYC in 2003. If I have anything new to say that'll be in red after the original text.
Special Mentions: The Cremaster Cycle and Angels in America
Most Underappreciated: Hulk (Ang Lee), In the Cut (Jane Campion), Anything Else (Woody Allen), Charlies Angels: Full Throttle (McG) and »

If there's one thing I love, it's good old fashioned conspiracy theories. Nothing like making a bunch of stuff up to make yourself feel better and give those around you a reason to think you're even more insane than they had imagined. Two stories broke today that have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Or do they?First up, is the so not news of a director not doing a movie he was never attached to direct in the first place. Huh? The trades has more:Paul Greengrass has opted out of helming another installment of Universal Pictures' successful Jason Bourne franchise, and Matt Damon's participation is not sealed. That's a blow for the studio looking to assemble another sequel to one of its most important franchises, but hardly a fatal one. Video games are bigger than movies (that's just a fact for ya), but does that mean the designers of a game are able to handle getting behind the camera for a movie? Read on for details and drop in your thoughts on a game director taking on a big budget feature film. Hi everyone, MattCanada here with another weekly dose of gay cinema. This week we're looking at Philadelphia, the Oscar winning courtroom drama, essentially the defining Hollywood response to the AIDS epidemic.
I first saw this film as a kid. I must have been about seven when I watched it with my parents and it was definitely my, and probably many other people's, introduction to AIDS. For me it continues to shape how I think about the virus, the stigma, and the epidemic. Longtime Companion opened a few years earlier but this was the first mainstream prestige film to deal with AIDS and homophobia. Having two big stars in Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington must have seemed like a big step for Hollywood. All of this is well and good, but rewatching the film for the first time in over a decade, I had serious problems with its filmic construction and especially its politics. »

Q: I recently watched a new series from USA Network titled White Collar, and I was stunned by the gorgeousness of the lead character, Neal, played by the beautiful Matthew Bomer. I can't seem to find much info about him. Mind to fill in more? -- rcLoy, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
A: Bomer is from Houston where his father was a Dallas Cowboy. He was a high school (and, later, acting school) classmate of Pushing Daisies’ Lee Pace. He started on soaps, almost played Superman in the latest Superman movie, and co-starred on the TV show Tru Calling (with Eliza Dushku) and in the movie Flight Plan (with Jodie Foster), and also had a reoccurring role on Chuck.

Can I be a script consultant, at least?
Fox Studios has taken on Rehab, a comedy flick by Sam Laybourne. Laybourne is currently working on the new ABC series Cougar Town, with Arrested Development and Angels in America also to his credit.
The movie’s plot revolves around a man who fakes being treated at a rehab center in order to reconnect with an old high school girlfriend who became a rock star and is now in rehab herself.
Peter Chernin and Will Gluck, who helped develop the script, are set to produce the film, with Gluck likely directing as well.
Gluck and Laybourne have worked together before on the show The Loop, while Chernin has been transitioning from Hollywood exec to producer.

Hear ye, hear ye! Variety has reported that Sir Howard Stringer -- an actual knight who, when he is not rescuing distressed damsels and fighting what we can only imagine would be rather incendiary dragons, serves as chair of the American Film Institute's board -- announced that director Mike Nichols will receive AFI's Life Achievement Award in a ceremony next summer. Here's 7 reasons why we're not surprised: 1. Nichols was honored at the Kennedy Center a few years back. (Some of our favorite Fsr readers were there.) 2. He's getting old. Like, really old. Keith Richards old. 3. Nichols is is one of only 10 people ever to win the statuette trifecta: Oscar, Tony, and Emmy. (Fyi? He's also won a Grammy. Others that have won all four include (but are not limited to) Whoopi Goldberg, Audrey Hepburn, and Mel Brooks.) 4. I love, love, love Elaine May. 5. Steven Spielberg is not giving up on his Lincoln project!
The director's attempt in launching his Lincoln masterpiece was postponed due to budget and location problems.
And now, Robert Redford is making his own Lincoln film although both movies are going into two different territories. Spielberg's film is reportedly going to focus on the president's dismay over the length and toll of the Civil War. The script is being rewritten by Tony Kushner ("Angels in America").
Meanwhile, Redford's film called "The Conspirator" will focus on a young woman charged with conspiring to kill Lincoln.
Spielberg tells Variety: "We are very happy that Redford will be doing this Lincoln movie. It is completely different from what our DreamWorks Lincoln movie will be, and we believe that it will add to the commercial potential of our film. Lincoln as a subject is inexhaustible."
Right now, Spielberg is focusing on his remake of »

Why aren’t there more good gay movies? We hear this complaint at AfterElton.com a lot, and we’ve even made it a few times ourselves (although we think the results of this poll prove that there are more good movies than many of us think!).
There are surely many reasons why more “mainstream” movies don’t include gay or bisexual themes, but no doubt one of them is heterosexual discomfort – not just discomfort on the part of audiences and network executives, but also discomfort on the part of critics and others to champion these films.
This is where our poll of AfterElton.com readers on the 50 Greatest Gay Movies comes in. We can think of no better way to encourage the creation of more good gay movies than to praise and support the existence of past good gay movies!
How does this list compare to our previous poll? »
