Philip Seymour Hoffman in Pirate Radio
Photo: Focus Features Richard Curtis's Pirate Radio features a collage of misfits played by some of the U.K.'s greatest comedic actors with Philip Seymour Hoffman bringing a taste of America to the story. The story isn't true, but is loosely based on a very real situation in the 1960s when the government-backed British Broadcasting Company (BBC) broadcast barely played two hours of rock and pop music every week over the U.K. radio airwaves. Compare this to the 571 American radio stations playing the same music 24 hours a day and you can immediately understand the dilemma. Curtis took this event, filled a ship with pirate radio broadcasters of his own creation and asked himself, "What would happen?" Pirate Radio is the result of that question.
Set in 1966, writer/director Richard Curtis was ten-years-old at the time and wrapped up in the tradition »

In 1966, arguably British pop music's finest era, the BBC played only two hours of rock n' roll every week but pirate radio blasted rock and pop from the high seas twenty-four hours a day and twenty-five million people, more than half the population of Britain, listened to these broadcasts every single day. Pirate Radio, opening in theaters everywhere on November 13th, is the latest film from Richard Curtis, the acclaimed director of Notting Hill and Love Actually, and chronicles these pioneers and the music that inspired a generation. The film stars Oscar winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman and an all-star cast of British actors that includes Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Rhys Darby, Nick Frost, Jack Davenport and Kenneth Branagh. We had an opportunity to travel to London a few weeks ago and speak with Bill Nighy, Nick Frost and the films young stars Tom Sturridge and Talulah Riley about the new »

It’s a crime that there are only a dozen or so films about, or involving, the world of broadcast radio. Not too many actually deal with the tribulations of censorship, though, which is where the upcoming film Pirate Radio comes in.
The film is about a group of rogue DJ’s on a boat in the middle of the Northern Atlantic who broadcast a pirate radio station in the 1960s, despite the laws forbidding Rock and Roll…all for the love of music. Given the fact that the film is all about 60’s Rock, you can believe that the soundtrack is pretty killer, and you may get to win a copy!
Starting today, keep an eye on our Twitter account every week for a trivia question involving “Radio in The Movies.” The question may be the name of the radio station from Grosse Point Blank or the name of the epic band in Airheads, »

I'm interested in Pirate Radio for two reasons - it stars Tom Sturridge, who is making a lot of waves for his performance on stage back in the UK (tMF will have more of that and Sturridge's possible rise into the Top 50 rankings later.) and of course, Philip Seymour Hoffman, who is always a wonder to watch - whether he plays the villain or a tortured soul or an investigator or any other role, he simply rock!

Brett Ratner set his Caps Lock to Shout yesterday and tweeted a post addressed to comic book fans everywhere. Apparently, someone accused him of being a liar at some point. I'm not sure of the exact context, but Ratner wants everyone to know that "No One Is Lying."
Brian Michael Bendis and Gail Simone, meanwhile, have been discussing their fondness for "The Beatles: Rock Band." Artist Mike Norton isn't quite as psyched about the release, but he'll probably let you play bass with him.
Elsewhere, Jock is getting pumped for his "Losers" set visit and Ron Marz has some advice for aspiring writers.
It's all below in the Twitter Report for September 10, 2009.

Expect everything from Nirvana and Green Day to Miley Cyrus and classical.

Nirvana to Miley Cyrus. Green Day to Howlin' Wolf. Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy Eat World. Obscure sample-happy Queens one-man band Kid America and the Action Figures to, of course, current tourmates Blink-182.
Those are some of the artists you'll hear on "Radio Weezer," the personal radio station the band launched Friday (August 28). The station follows in the footsteps of similar "Artist Personal Experience" radio stations from Christina Aguilera and the Eagles' Joe Walsh — who share management with Weezer — that have debuted in recent weeks.
A dip into the playlist Friday morning revealed some of the usual suspects (Ramones, R.E.M., Foo Fighters, Nirvana, the Pixies), as well as a few unexpected, more obscure surprises (songwriter Landon Pigg, MxPx, Frank Zappa) and, not surprisingly, Weezer's back catalog, including the band's toe-tappingly retro-pop new single, »

Miley Cyrus is hosting the #1 "Party in the U.S.A." for the third week in a row on the iTunes Top 10 chart. The song is currently #1 on Radio Disney's online countdown and the Ep which contains the track, "The Time of Our Lives," will hit Wal-Mart stores exclusively this weekend. The song could also unseat the Black Eyed Peas from the #1 song in the country with "I Gotta Feeling," which is currently #2 on iTunes.
Jay Sean and Lil' Wayne keep moving up with their song "Down," which is at #3 this week. Jay-z is down a spot to #4 with "Run This Town," featuring Rihanna and Kanye West. Newcomer Jason DeRulo is taking his Imogen Heap sample all the way to the top. His single, "Whatcha Say," which features a sample of the Imogen Heap hit "Hide & Seek," is at #5 this week.
Kings of Leon are at #6 this week with their hit "Use Somebody, »

Aliens invade the box office with District 9; get ready to see more Saw; Elvis talks Bubba Nosferatu; St Elmo’s Fire gets remade; Dennis Quaid and Tim Allen join Ron Shelton in Q School, while Maggie Q looks for a Priest; Godzilla may be going on the warpath again; Sony takes a dose of Doctor Parnassus and Wall Street 2 adds another cast member.
Box Office
It looks like originality won out at the box office for a change. Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 banked a cool $37 million over the weekend. The Peter Jackson produced Sci-Fi film had a negative cost of just $30 million and with great reviews it looks like this could do well in the long run too.
GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra had an average drop from last weekend’s surprisingly high take. Down just around 60% (which is pretty middle of the road »

Musician/inventor is credited with innovations in multi-track recording and designed the Gibson guitar that bears his name.
By Gil Kaufman
Les Paul

Les Paul, the man credited with helping to revolutionize the electric guitar and change the course of music with his innovations in multi-track recording, died on Thursday (August 13) at the age of 94. According to a statement released by Gibson guitars — which manufactures the world-famous guitars bearing Paul's name — he died of complications from pneumonia in a White Plains, New York, hospital.
From the time he picked up his first guitar at the age of 9, Paul was fascinated with the instrument and its myriad possibilities. He began playing professionally at age 13 with country and western bands, as well as tinkering in his shop with a number of sound-related inventions that would soon revolutionize and forever change the sound of modern popular music. »

Your boys are back at it. Hiatus is done. Today we had to put Firestarter on the back burner to bring you this testimonial from none other than the Game.
