‘Edge of Darkness UK Poster

11 December 2009 2:54 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Mel Gibson is back! It’s his first leading man performance since…bloody hell, when was it? (Signs in 2002). There was a cameo appearance in ‘The Singing Detective’, but nothing since. Meantime, the only cameras he has appeared in front of were paparazzi and Lapd ones. This past decade has been one of major ups and downs for Aussie/American superstar. There was the “sugar tits” incident, the divorce, the mid-life crisis partying, the amazing ‘Apocalypto’ and now he’s back to acting in films.

Edge of Darkness is the film version of the classic 1985 television drama. Good news is, it has retained its original director Martin Campbell. The story is centred around a man attempting to discover the murderer of his daughter, which then leads into intrigue and grander things.

This new poster looks pretty ace and gives the impression this is going to be a tough thriller. Look how moody Mel looks! »

Free Flick of the Day: Pieces of April

26 November 2009 6:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In this current world where Katie Holmes is wife to Tom Cruise and mother of Suri, it's easy to forget she used to have a pretty solid indie career intermingled with her days on the popular Creek -- Libbets Casey in The Ice Storm, Claire in Go, Hannah in Wonder Boys, Jessica in The Gift, Nurse Mills in The Singing Detective, April Burns in Pieces of April, and Heather Holloway in Thank You For Smoking. But there is one starring role in there that's quite applicable this week: Pieces of April. *

Her last big role of worth (she played only a supporting character in Smoking and she was bad enough to be axed from Gotham law after Batman Begins), Pieces of April finds Holmes the black sheep of a dysfunctional family. Living a life on her own in New York with her boyfriend Bobby, April decides to tackle the daunting »

Mel Gibson Is Back: Trailer For Edge of Darkness Debuts

15 October 2009 11:13 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Well you had better decide if you're hanging on the cross, or banging in the nails... Fuck yeah. Mel Gibson is back. The trailer for Edge of Darkness, his first film since 2003's The Singing Detective, has debuted online - and it's looking awesome. The trailer both shows intense action and the workings of a great plot, which isn't surprising seeing as the movie is based on an excellent BBC miniseries from 1985 that the film's director (Casino Royale-director Martin Campbell) actually directed himself back in the day. So get ready for an engaging thriller with Gibson back in action. This is going to be intense. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Trailer - Mel Gibson's Back in 'Edge of Darkness'

15 October 2009 2:19 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Yesterday, we had a trailer for The Expendables, the new Sly Stallone movie. One thing I noticed was how many bad catchphrases it tried to shove down our throat, apparently hopeful that one would catch on. Today, we have Edge of Darkness, the new Mel Gibson thriller directed by Casino Royale's Martin Campbell. It has its catchphrase all figured out, as you'll soon learn.

This is Gibson's first movie as an actor since The Singing Detective in 2003, but really, his first major work since Signs. He's got plenty of help in Edge of Darkness, including the always entertaining Danny Huston and Ray Winstone. Really, that's about all you need for a movie like this: Gibson as a guy, well, on the edge, Winstone as the muscle, Huston as the oily villain.

Another interesting twist here: Not only is this based on a BBC miniseries from the 1980s, but Campbell directed that, »

Discuss: Can You Ever Forget Reality on the Big Screen?

23 April 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The last time we got to see Mel Gibson on the big screen, it was in The Singing Detective. Six years, some violent films, and an infamous arrest later, and we're finally getting another dose as he plays a homicide cop in Martin Campbell's Edge of Darkness. The film centers on a cop (Gibson) who watches his daughter (Bojana Novakovic) die, and then sets out to find the people who killed her.

Darkness is slated to hit screens later this year, and to kick off the buzz, an image has been released to Empire, which you can see in its entirety here. The image shows Gibson kneeling over a body, in front of a cop car and parts of what seems to be another totaled car, looking peeved. Try as I might, but I can't view this picture in the proper context. All I can see is a cautionary »

First Look: Mel Gibson is Acting Again in Edge of Darkness!

22 April 2009 2:50 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Damn, those guys at Empire are on a roll this week! Their latest first look photo debut is of Mel Gibson in Martin Campbell's thriller Edge of Darkness. Gibson hasn't been seen in front of the camera since The Singing Detective in 2003 and Signs in 2002 before that (and no, The Colonel doesn't count). He's back acting again, this time as a homicide cop who witnesses the death of his activist daughter right in front of his own eyes. He then sets out to catch the killers, uncovering a larger conspiracy in the process. Knowing how the story plays out (see below), our guess is that this photo is from an early scene of the film. "He's a seasoned old detective," Gibson says about his character Thomas Craven. "A bit hangdog. And he's in a state of shock for most of the film, because he's had tremendous trauma right at »

Getting in the Act: 11 Novelists Who Found Their Way Into the Script

26 February 2009 3:30 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Rock stars want to be movie stars and movie stars want to be rock stars; models want to be designers and designers want to tooth-tug Keira Knightley's ear on the cover of Vanity Fair. These are known facts, demonstrable often to a shudder-inducing degree. What to make, though, of the latent career ambitions suggested by the humble novelist's propensity for cameos? Do they all want to be comedians? Professional winkers? Or just slightly richer?

From Saul Bellow playing the "Man in Hallway" in an adaptation of his novel "Seize the Day" 30 years after it had been first published to Michael Chabon taking abuse in a bookstore in the upcoming adaptation of his 1988 novel, "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh," many authors can't resist the idea of essentially walking into their own novel when put to celluloid. Below are a few of those, and a few more whose motivations are more elusive. »
