China's disenchanted rock bands are featured in this moving portrayal of Road and his band-members as they travel throughout the inner lands of contemporary China, living their underground lives. They are hardly appreciated yet somewhat popularised by the medium of their expression, though hardly mainstream. The American-born Chinese character played by Daniel Wu and the campy girl played by Taiwan beguiler Shu Qi reflects the life and times of modern China, swept along with the cultural and social changes that have befallen the city and the countryside. A highly poignant and reflective film, and not mainstream, though it strives to be.
