In March 2006 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sprung one of its annual surprises by awarding the best picture Oscar to Crash, rather than Ang Lee’s acclaimed gay cowboy drama, Brokeback Mountain. At the time it looked as though racism and multiple vehicular pile-ups had trumped homosexuality in the battle of the “hot button” issue movies. But perhaps the Academy was belatedly acknowledging the kind of ambitious, densely plotted, multi-character dramas made famous by the great Robert Altman. From 1975’s Nashville, to Short Cuts, Prêt à Porter and his 2006 swansong A Prairie Home Companion, Altman allowed audiences to immerse themselves in the cinematic equivalent of a book of short stories. Writer Alissa Quart has characterised these films with multiple intersecting plotlines as “hyperlink movies”, in which, “information, character, and action co-exist without hierarchy”. Now I’m a fan of Altman and I loved Paul Thomas Anderson’s, »

Despite an interesting cast and passionate pleas from more than one film critic, Brett Simon’s Assassination of a High School President is the latest project to be burped out of the gaping, bankrupt maw of the Yari Film Group and directly onto the DVD market. Yari’s failure has claimed some terrific films - most notably a pair of Rod Lurie movies - and although Assassination doesn’t quite deserve to be lumped in with the best of the studio’s aborted litter, it’s certainly better than most direct-to-video projects, and well worth a rental and 90 minutes of your time. My review after the jump:
Sort of a clownish, noir-scented blend of Rushmore and The Usual Suspects, Assassination stars the deliberately Jason Schwartzmann-like Reece Thompson as Bobby Funke (it’s pronounced “Funk,” but everyone says it “Funky”), a wannabe cub reporter for the paper at St. Donovan’s High, »

As you have seen, we’ve been closely following the release of DJ Hero, the next step in rhythm gaming from Activision. Today is no exception as the company has now released the full 93 song set list for the game. While all club styled mixes, remixes and mashups, DJ Hero boasts one of the most varied collection of artists in any Hero franchise release.
With everything from the Jackson 5 to 2Pac, Daft Punk to Queen and everything in between, that variety of DJ Hero’s playlist is unmatched, as long as you like mashups and remixes. If you are a musical purist to the extreme, this game isn’t really what you’d be looking for.
In addition, the game will feature 10 tracks where players can plug in their Guitar Hero guitar and play alongside their friend on the DJ Hero turntable for a true real time rock / dance mashup. »

Couples Retreat is released this week. Once again Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn re-team, this time in a comedy about four couples who attend a therapeutic couples retreat, little knowing they’ll be expected to put their relationships under the microscope.
Vaughan and Favreau have worked together in several films, most notably in Favreau’s self-penned Swingers in 1996. Directed by Doug Liman, it’s a hip, trendy comedy with cool, likeable characters and endlessly quotable lines. Or is it?
When i first saw Swingers over 10 years ago, i loved it. I loved the snappy dialogue and the laid back attitude of the characters, as they hit the best nightspots and hot parties. My experience re-watching it this week was entirely different.
Mike (Favreau) is a comedian slash actor, who has been in La for sixth months since his girlfriend left him. Mike is really the main character. Now, usually, the main character is likeable, »

Assassination of a High School President is yet another Hollywood tragedy that had all the promise in the world, but, through bad turns of offscreen circumstance, never got the shot in theaters it deserved.
The film was a hit at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and people were calling it the next Brick - pretty much because both films are homages to the Film Noir era, set against the backdrop of modern high school. After the Yari Group, the owners of the film, went bankrupt, the film’s fate was left to question. Assassination of a High School President has finally been released direct-to-dvd this week and we’ve got the review for you.
The plot of Assassination of a High School President follows Bobby Funke (Reece Thompson), a hard-nosed reporter (and geeky sophomore) working for the school paper, who can never quite finish his epic conspiracy stories. While covering a piece profiling St. »

No matter what he does, in my mind, Emilio Estevez will always be Gordon Bombay (Minneapolis, Minnesota), coach of the Mighty Ducks. And who would've thought that the Breakfast Club actor would've turned out to be a decent director too? Though the reviews were mixed on Bobby, there's no doubt that Estevez at least knows how to operate behind the camera, even if he's not the greatest screenwriter. Variety announces Estevez's The Way (his fourth feature as writer and director), a family-drama starring Martin Sheen (The Departed), Deborah Kara Unger (Silent Hill), and James Nesbitt (Five Minutes of Heaven). Spanish actors Angela Molina and Carlos Leal (Broken Embraces), Simon Andreu (Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian), and Eusebio Lazaro (Pan's Labyrinth) also star in the story of "Tom Avery, a Californian ophthalmologist who travels to France to reclaim the body of his estranged son, who died in a storm in the Pyrenees, »

We haven't seen much of ex-Brat Packer Emilio Estevez since he spent so much time with the Mighty Ducks, but that's because he's been behind the camera. The movies stars smoky-voiced actress Deborah Kara Unger (The Game, Stander) and Brit actor James Nesbitt (Match Point, Bloody Sunday). Estevez also managed to coax screen veteran Martin... »

I'm exploding with joy to tell you that "The Hurt Locker" is definitely the best movie of the summer, and is a contender to be one of the best of the year!
Written by Mark Boal (pictured on left) and directed by Katherine Bigelow (pictured on right), the film made its debut at the Venice Film Festival last year, and didn't make its way to the Us until March 2009 at the South by Southwest Film Festival.
(From L to R: Anthony Mackie, Jeremy Renner, Brian Geraghty)
"The Hurt Locker" tells the story of an elite Army bomb squad in Iraq and the highly-combustible game they play against potential enemies. And those enemies can also be the war raging within each characters.
Anthony Mackie ("We Are Marshall," "Million Dollar Baby") stars as the by-the-books Sergeant Jt Sanborn. All he wants is to get out of Iraq.

Employing a level of tension that a horror director would covet, Kathryn Bigelow has crafted a master action film with The Hurt Locker. The Point Break filmmaker has directed a piece of work that should appeal to both action movie hounds with its impeccable special effects, and to indie audiences with its attention to character and detail.
In the unbearably hot summer of 2004 in Baghdad, three men in Bravo Company work together to defuse Iraqi bombs, or Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). From bombs buried in the ground to men wearing vests strapped with explosives, these weapons are responsible for the deaths of thousands of American soldiers and Iraqi citizens. Staff Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner, 28 Weeks Later) defuses the bombs, and his cowboy-like manner belies the precision and talent required to do his dangerous, stressful job. Happy birthday to all the cancers out there — including MTV's own Shaheem Reid, Sway and Mixtape Daily go-to girl Whitney, not to mention Jim Jones and the G-Unit General himself, 50 Cent. Fif's born day was Monday, but he's still serving treats. He released his second mixtape in just a couple of weeks, , Forever King, and says in addition to the upcoming G-Unit mixtape, he might put out another free CD prior to Before I Self Destruct in September. Trey Songz is also locked in the studio, and he wants a bigger and better spot. Who's gonna stand in his way?
Finally and obviously, rest in peace to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Thank you for a lifetime of classic songs, videos, performances and moments. Your genius is eternal.
