  • Tobey Maguire bought the rights to the original novel with the intent of starring. He later decided to do Spider-Man (2002), although he did stay on this film as a producer.

  • During his speech in the bathroom, Edward Norton says, "Slavery ended 137 years ago. Move the fuck on!" This is a reference to American History X (1998), where he says, "Slavery ended like a hundred and thirty years ago, how long does it take to get your act together?"

  • Edward Norton's character mentions about wanting to be the "girl in 'X-Men', the one that can walk through walls". Co-stars Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Aaron Stanford and Dania Ramirez have all starred in the X-Men movies, as Rogue, General Stryker, Pyro, and Callisto respectively. The girl who can walk through walls is called Shadowcat.

  • Brittany Murphy was originally lined up to play Mary D'Annunzio but left the project.

  • 'Alicia Keys ' was considered for the role of Naturelle.

  • Monty has a poster of Cool Hand Luke (1967) in his house.

  • Writer David Benioff said in a BBC interview, "The first time I saw [Edward Norton] on set he pulled back his hair and showed me his widow's peak. In the book, Monty Brogan has a widow's peak, but I hadn't mentioned it in the script. But Edward so wanted to be in character that he wore a prosthetic widow's peak for the entire shoot."

  • Edward Norton says he took every penny he made from Red Dragon (2002) to finance this film.

  • Monty's line, "Champagne for my real friends, and real pain for my sham friends," is a Francis Bacon quote.

  • On-screen father and son Brian Cox and Edward Norton have both appeared in films with the Hannibal Lecter character: Cox played Lecter in Manhunter (1986), while Norton played Will Graham in that movie's remake, Red Dragon (2002). Philip Seymour Hoffman also appeared in Red Dragon (2002) as reporter Freddy Lounds.

  • Director Trademark: [Spike Lee] [basketball] Both Monty and Naturelle played high school basketball; another scene depicts a playground game. Also, Frank is reminded by his boss that they have courtside seats for an upcoming game.

  • Edward Norton says the word "fuck" 40 times in about five minutes during his monologue in the bathroom. The phrase "Fuck you" is on the mirror in the bathroom.

  • Director Trademark: [Spike Lee] [glide] In the scene right after Jacob leaves the bathroom, he is seen motionless with the the background slowly panning out. Spike Lee often places actors on dollies to achieve this effect.

  • During Monty's interrogation one of the detectives talks about Naturelle and says "Girl saw a pot of honey and licked it clean", meaning she's taking advantage of him. Previously, in the scene where Monty and Naturelle talk on the couch before taking a bath, she's eating honey out of a pot which Monty opens for her.
