Like the Independent Spirit Awards, Canada's announcement of nominees for its Genie Awards also touched off castigating articles from critics who complained about the exclusion of Atom Egoyan from the list of nominees for best director, while his film, Ararat, received more nominations than any other film, nine. A particular irony is that the main character in the film is a director. The nominees for best film included: Ararat, Bollywood/Hollywood, Rare Birds, and Suddenly Naked. »

Director Mehta To Open Toronto Festival

Deepa Mehta's Bollywood/Hollywood has been selected to open the Perspective Canada series at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 6, the director of the festival, Piers Handling, announced Tuesday. The Toronto Star described the movie as "a madcap mixture of East and West with Bollywood music, Hollywood choreography and Canadian locations." (The $3.2-million film was shot in Toronto last fall.) The film represents a decided change of pace for the Canadian-based Mehta, whose previous two films ignited angry protests in India. Her last film, Water, could not be completed because of violent attacks on the location sites of the movie by Hindu fundamentalists. »
